Bed situation. Currently the second floor is an open bunkhouse space with four queen beds, one full mattress and two twins. So sleeps up to 12 if you don’t mind the bunkhouse vibe. There is a curtain that can separate the room in half. The rest of the floor space is open. So comfortable, basic, clean, a step above Glamping. Numerous great spots to car or tent camp as an option as well. We’ve had numerous people stay by themselves overnight. We’ve also had groups of around 20+, crashing on the floor, camping, etc. and overall worked extremely well. This is a work in progress, and will strive to make it as comfy and adaptable as possible..

Q: I’ve heard there can be biting flies, gnats, horse flies, and mosquitoes in the area. How can I prepare for this?
A: You’re correct, these insects are part of the natural ecosystem in the Driftless region, reminding us of its untouched beauty. However, we’ve got you covered at Defiance Springs Lodge. We provide effective insect repellents for our guests’ use, ensuring you can enjoy the outdoors without discomfort. For those occasional days when insects are particularly active, we also offer face netting. Your comfort and connection to nature are our top priorities.
Q: what repellents do you provide or recommend?
A: Picaridin-based repellent: an excellent alternative to DEET. Picaridin is effective against mosquitoes, ticks, biting flies, gnats, and chiggers. Not neurotoxic. It's safe for use on both skin and clothing and is less likely to cause skin irritation. Plus, it's virtually odorless and does not damage or dissolve plastics and synthetic fabrics.
2. Lusa Bug Balm: A lovingly made local product, Lusa uses a blend of essential oils to deter bugs. This all-natural, organic balm offers a gentle and earth-friendly option for those preferring to avoid synthetic repellents.

A: Yes. We also offer Cobalt Cottage on the same grounds. For larger parties you can rent both properties if available. And again we also have campsites for tent and car camping and or RVs.
Q: What about wildlife encounters at Defiance Springs Lodge, especially large predators like black bears?
A: While black bears do inhabit southwest Wisconsin, it is extremely rare for humans to come into contact with them or any other large predators. TheDefiance Springs Lodge property is generally safe from any such encounters.
Q: What precautions should I take against ticks, and do you provide tick protection?
A: Ticks can be a concern in the area. To protect yourself, we recommend using a permethrin spray on your gear and clothing. We provide permethrin spray for our guests' convenience.
Q: Can we access guides for foraging, fishing, hiking?
A: Yes! Tony and other hosts are often free to act as your personal guide. Just tell us what experiences you are seeking.
Q: Do we need to bring firewood
A: No. We a have limitless supply
Q: What's the deal with the security cameras?
A: For safety and security there are cameras around the host cabin. However for your privacy and comfort there are zero cameras adjacent to serenity cabin. There are occasional trail cams as well.

A: Accessing Defiance Springs Lodge in winter can be more challenging, but the added seclusion enhances the enjoyment of your stay. The creek crossings may become difficult for non-SUVs to navigate due to ice and snow. However, if necessary, you can park on the other side of the creek and walk to the lodge. We've strategically placed three portable Axiom baskets across our property, allowing players to practice different shots in a unique, secluded setting. No concrete tees yet.
While we don't yet have a formal course, the freedom to move baskets and create your own course layout adds an exciting element of customization. You can tailor your disc golf experience to be as laid-back or as challenging as you like.
And if you're looking for a more conventional course to play, the renowned Veteran Hills Disc Golf Course is only a short five-minute drive away.

Q: I’ve heard there can be biting flies, gnats, horse flies, and mosquitoes in the area. How can I prepare for this?
A: You’re correct, these insects are part of the natural ecosystem in the Driftless region, reminding us of its untouched beauty. However, we’ve got you covered at Defiance Springs Lodge. We provide effective insect repellents for our guests’ use, ensuring you can enjoy the outdoors without discomfort. For those occasional days when insects are particularly active, we also offer face netting. Your comfort and connection to nature are our top priorities.
Q: what repellents do you provide or recommend?
A: Picaridin-based repellent: an excellent alternative to DEET. Picaridin is effective against mosquitoes, ticks, biting flies, gnats, and chiggers. Not neurotoxic. It's safe for use on both skin and clothing and is less likely to cause skin irritation. Plus, it's virtually odorless and does not damage or dissolve plastics and synthetic fabrics.
2. Lusa Bug Balm: A lovingly made local product, Lusa uses a blend of essential oils to deter bugs. This all-natural, organic balm offers a gentle and earth-friendly option for those preferring to avoid synthetic repellents.
3. Permethrin spray: aka tick armor. For maximum protection against ticks, we provide a Permethrin-based spray for use on clothing and gear. Permethrin not only repels ticks but can kill them on contact. Please note this is for fabric application only and not for direct application to skin.
Q: Can additional guests camp on the property?
A: Yes! Primitive camping is available for additional guests at just $20 per adult per night. Let us know your total number of guests, and we'll send you an offer.
Q: Is there another AirBNB on the property?
A: Yes. We also offer Cobalt Cottage on the same grounds. For larger parties you can rent both properties if available. And again we also have campsites for tent and car camping and or RVs.
Q: What about wildlife encounters at Defiance Springs Lodge, especially large predators like black bears?
A: While black bears do inhabit southwest Wisconsin, it is extremely rare for humans to come into contact with them or any other large predators. TheDefiance Springs Lodge property is generally safe from any such encounters.
Q: What precautions should I take against ticks, and do you provide tick protection?
A: Ticks can be a concern in the area. To protect yourself, we recommend using a permethrin spray on your gear and clothing. We provide permethrin spray for our guests' convenience.
Q: Can we access guides for foraging, fishing, hiking?
A: Yes! Tony and other hosts are often free to act as your personal guide. Just tell us what experiences you are seeking.

A: For safety and security there are cameras around the host cabin. However for your privacy and comfort there are zero cameras adjacent to serenity cabin. There are occasional trail cams as well.

A: Accessing Defiance Springs Lodge in winter can be more challenging, but the added seclusion enhances the enjoyment of your stay. The creek crossings may become difficult for non-SUVs to navigate due to ice and snow. However, if necessary, you can park on the other side of the creek and walk to the lodge. This option is available when safe and practical, ensuring that you can still experience the tranquility and beauty of Defiance Springs Lodge during the winter months.
Q: What's the disc golf scene like at Defiance Springs Lodge?
A: At Defiance Springs Lodge, we offer an intimate, private setting for disc golf enthusiasts. You can enjoy a relaxed yet challenging game amidst the breathtaking beauty of your own personal forest. We've strategically placed three portable Axiom baskets across our property, allowing players to practice different shots in a unique, secluded setting. No concrete tees yet.
While we don't yet have a formal course, the freedom to move baskets and create your own course layout adds an exciting element of customization. You can tailor your disc golf experience to be as laid-back or as challenging as you like.
And if you're looking for a more conventional course to play, the renowned Veteran Hills Disc Golf Course is only a short five-minute drive away.
We're actively working on expanding our disc golf facilities, so be sure to check in for updates. Until then, enjoy perfecting your throw in the peace and tranquility of your own private woodland retreat. Happy throwing!
