About This Listing
Enjoy a cool neighborhood with a private, upstairs 1 bedroom/1 bath in a newly renovated home with a backyard. You can enjoy our kitchen but we are quite close to lots of amazing restaurants, coffee shops, and bars.
1 bedroom/1 bath. Upstairs on a separate floor so it feels very private. Queen bed and a couch. Fresh yummy towels. New, modern house in a very sunny spot in SF.
You would share a kitchen with us but in SF, who wants to cook? 3 blocks from Cortland Street in cozy Bernal Heights and 1 mile from the Mission hot spots like Monks Kettle, Foreign Cinema, Range, Locanda, Delfina, Mission Cheese, Craftsman & Wolves, Ritual Coffee, and many other unique, amazing restaurants/bars/cafes.
Check out the "Guidebook" on the map/location page of our listing.
We have fast WIFI, a backyard (a treat in SF), & Hummingbirds. We love our place but like to meet new people so this seems like a cool way to do so.
Check out the 7x7 Top 100 things to do in SF. Bernal Heights Hill is #1! (website hidden)
As a guest at our home, you will have access to the second floor which has your bedroom and bathroom. It feels pretty private since we are on the main floor.
You of course can use the kitchen -- we reserve a part of our fridge and pantry for you so you can store delicious things you may pick up at places like BiRite or TCHO -- and also our living room/dining area. A bonus is our backyard which isn't completely common in SF.
Interaction with Guests
Our interaction with you, depends on, well you. We are more than happy to chat as you return home after visiting gorgeous SF sites, or if you want to just come home after a long day and plop down, that's fine too.
We are always happy to give food/drink recommendations or offer advice on best ways to get somewhere (either via car or public transportation), and talk through trips outside the city.
On Cortland, the heart of Bernal, there are three great coffee shops (the best is Sandbox Bakery), a sushi place (Mokis), Vega (good Italian), Red Hill Station. And we just got a new cocktail bar called Holy Water. Also one of the best sushi places in SF, Ichi Sushi, is very close on Mission. Cortland is 3 short blocks from the house. Also, a must-see is the top of Bernal Hill, where you get amazing views of Downtown SF and the East Bay, just an invigorating 13 min walk up from our place, complete with a panoply of dogs.
We are close to public transportation like MUNI lines J Church, buses #24 & #14 & #67, and BART stations (Glen Park & 24th street).
Free street parking in front of or very close by to the house is readily available.
We have great freeway access for destinations such as Napa, Marin or East Bay. We are a walk to the mission and a combination of car + public transport to tourist spots like Pier 39, the Marina, Golden Gate, etc. We can help get you there.
Other Things to Note
If you want to visit Alcatraz while you are in SF, you should look at reserve/buy tickets ahead of time - often they are sold out within weeks of a specific date. And now SF has a bike share program. Search for "Bay Area Bike Share" - it's nice to check out a bike and ride around the Embarcadero and hit some of SF's tourist sites on bike, faster than walking and you still get to be outside!
Please no eating upstairs. Join us in the bright sunny kitchen/dining space.
And ask us anything, especially for things like maps of SF, suggested routes on how to get where, to avoid traffic, etc...
Guests may not bring non-registered guests, friends, sleepovers, etc. into the home.
Our stay was lovely. The neighborhood is really wonderful with lots of great eats. Our hosts were helpful in giving us excellent food recommendations and making us feel at home.
Great room in a beautiful house in a cool location - what more could you want?! Room is on the top floor with private bathroom so we felt like we had our own space. Hilary and Kevin are great and couldn't have been more helpful - they provided some great tips and local recommendations. Bernal Heights felt like a really nice neighbourhood. Just wish we had had more time to stay in San Francisco.
My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time staying at Hilary and Kevin's place. We had the pleasure of meeting the two of them who were both very informative and welcoming. They were very flexible with the check-in time and arranged to meet with us earlier so we could drop off our things. They even allowed us to keep our bags by the main entrance after check-out so we didn't have to carry them around on our last day. They gave us room in the fridge if we needed to store anything and allowed us to use anything in their kitchen.
The room and bathroom are upstairs so we had plenty of privacy. The place was extremely clean and had spare toiletries in case you forgot anything. I wish we spent more time there since the space is beautiful (with a backyard!) but we were busy exploring the city and really just used the room to sleep after a long day. Be careful of the slanted ceilings though! My boyfriend hit his head a few times. The place is easy to get around with BART and MUNI close by but we mainly used UberPool (ridesharing) which costs $7 to get to anywhere in SF. I believe that is a limited price offering though.
As for communication, Hilary and Kevin responded very quickly and even gave us some recommendations to restaurants/places to visit. We took up one of their restaurant recommendations - SPQR - and had a lovely Italian dinner. They also provided a map and guide to the city. We had no issues planning out our day or getting around in the city.
Overall a fantastic experience! We would definitely recommend anyone to stay with Hilary and Kevin.
Hilary and Kevin were great hosts even though we didn't actually get to meet them. Information and instructions were clear and helpful. Very comfortable room in a lovely home. Bernal Heights is a great little SF neighborhood worth exploring. Terrific location. We had a wonderful time.
Great place, located in a quiet neighborhood, very clean apartment and friendly, welcoming hosts.
I would definitely recommend it.
If you don't have a car, it takes around 45 min by public transport to get to the city center. Uber is around $12 and it only takes only 9 min.
My husband and I stayed at Hilary and Kevin's place while in SF for 3 days. The room was very clean and cozy, the bed was comfortable, and we had access to a private bathroom which was great. Hilary made space in the fridge for us if needed and let us use anything we needed in the kitchen. Their little backyard was also lovely after a day of walking around the city - a nice and peaceful place to relax. There were lots of SF guides and maps left in our room which we used a lot more than we thought we would! Hilary also left some information about the neighborhood and restaurant recommendations, one of which we took her up on and really enjoyed! The only thing I would suggest is adding a small TV/DVD player to the room, as sometimes we were wishing we could unwind at the end of a long day with Netflix or something, but other than that we really enjoyed our stay.
