Welcome to Oaxaca.
Donna and Carlos's garden apartment is a charming perfectly located oasis in the heart of Oaxaca. As a contemporary art curator visiting Oaxaca for the first time with my art-loving best friend from high school, we could tell we stumbled upon a very special place when we arrived and were greeted by beautiful local textiles, ceramics, and gorgeous atrium. The hosts are gracious, organized, and knowledgeable (having delicious coffee to start the morning was especially appreciated). If you have an opportunity to go with Carlos on an excursion to Tule and neighboring sights, I recommend it. I also strongly recommend the Textile Museum and La Biznaga for dinner. Both are in easy walking distance and La Biznaga had some of the most beautiful shops we came across and is where I purchased many gifts. Honestly, the only area for improvement I can possibly mention is the water pressure but that is true of all places in Oaxaca, as far as I can tell.
I get the impression that it is rare for a room to be available at Casa Zapoteca since there are so many regulars who book it year after year. If you get a chance to stay here, grab it!
We had a lovely time at Carlos and Donnas flat. It was more than we expected - the flat was comfortable, spacious, extremely well decorated. Carlos was a great host, welcomed us at the flat, explained the area and left lots of drinks and treats to welcome us with. It was an ideal flat and location from which to enjoy Oaxaca and travel the area. We highly recommend this property for anyone visiting the area - you will not make a better choice.
Donna and Carlos are gracious hosts. They provided helpful suggestions and guidebooks for us to look at. The apartment was clean, comfortable, and the kitchen was well stocked. The apartment doesn't provide a lot of natural light, but that does help keep it cool during the hot days. There is a great rooftop terrace where we enjoyed relaxing in the afternoon. The location is very good (however, there is a school nearby that plays loud music on weekday mornings, around 7:30). The only drawback is that the apartment is pretty expensive for Oaxaca City--we paid $150 a night, in November.
Donna and Carlos have truly created a special home. They have thought of the smallest of details to make their apartment beautiful in every way and to make their guests feel completely comfortable. We spent nine nights in their Owner's Garden Apartment for el Día de los Muertos (a perfect time to be in Oaxaca!), and we could not have been any happier with our stay.
We loved the beauty, space, and comfort of the apartment and its perfect location, just a short walk away from everything you will want to see in Oaxaca. We enjoyed spending time on their stunning roof deck looking over the mountains, the botanical gardens, and the church. Carlos also took us on a tour of some of the nearby towns, which was very convenient and a wonderful experience. It was a true pleasure to meet Donna, Carlos, and Gardenia.
We would highly recommend any of their three terrific airbnb rentals!
We hope to return in the near future and look forward to seeing Donna, Carlos, and Gardenia again.
We loved Oaxaca and Donna and Carlos' apartment was perfect for us in every way.
We arrived after a long bus journey from Mexico City to a very warm welcome and to be able to make a great coffee and have some yummy tortillas was sooo good.
The apartment was spotlessly clean, it was really comfortable, it had everything we needed and it felt like a home from home for us.
There is great information about Oaxaca in the apartment and all of Carlos and Donnas recommendations were fantastic. We loved our day tour to the mountains with Carlos - we would highly recommend it !
Donna and Carlos are the most amazing and generous hosts. Nothing was ever too much trouble their attention to detail is second to none .
Thankyou both so much and Gardenia too - you all made our stay in Oaxaca very special.
Please look us up if you ever come to Australia!

We stayed in this lovely apartment for the entire month of September 2014, and were very pleased with location, size, furnishings, cleanliness, pretty much everything! The owner has impeccable taste, as can be seen in the posted photos. She also provides wonderful information about specific artists and their shops in Oaxaca - we bought several items from people we would otherwise have missed had we not gotten some insider information from Donna! The apartment itself is very roomy (including a huge walk-in closet) and lovely, and we greatly appreciated the well-stocked kitchen where we managed to cook all kinds of Oaxacan delicacies - thanks to the neighborhood market (Sanchez Pascuas) just two blocks away, which we we walked up to on a daily basis to keep our kitchen stocked. The location of the apartment couldn't be better - close to wonderful Conzati Park (don't miss the Cuban sandwiches at La Hormiga food truck there) and just around the corner from the pedestrian walkway down which you can stroll to the zocalo and main markets. A few blocks east is Llano Park with its delightful central fountain - lots of families there, wonderful to sit on a bench and enjoy the parade of people. The street the apartment is on is quiet (though a public address system - recent addition? - in the nearby elementary school could certainly be turned down a notch or two! That's not in the owner's control, of course...) and the apartment sits just behind Oaxaca's botanical garden and Santo Domingo church and museum. We loved hearing the church bells calling people to mass. We often went over to the Graphic Arts museum just a block away - it has a series of library rooms (art books galore, all available for public viewing) in which to spend a calm afternoon, though the apartment itself and the rooftop terrace are probably all you need. Oaxaca tends to have water volume problems, so we were not surprised to find a less-than-powerful shower in the apartment - not really a problem, just takes some getting used to. Again, I don't think you can go wrong renting this lovely apartment. Many other renters have said the same - trust them - this is a wonderful choice for your stay in an intriguing and lively city.
Donna and Carlos were absolutely wonderful. There isn't much we can add to the previous reviews - - the place was spotless, comfortable, and thoughtfully stocked with all types of juices, coffee, and even some Oaxacan cheese when we arrived. I came with a colleague to do fieldwork for the week. While I would recommend seeing the city as much as possible, the apartment was a wonderful base to work in as well; fast wifi, quiet and easily accessible to the center, llano, and points beyond. Donna and Carlos were very welcoming and took very good care of us. Three cheers for their house!

I came upon Oaxaca in the early seventies while traveling through Mexico and Central America looking at ancient ruins, pottery villages and having the adventure of a lifetime. As the years went by I continued to return to the"Land of Chapulines". It retained its magic. And so, in 1996 I gave up the life I loved in a big city and moved to Oaxaca to live a dream. I met my partner, Carlos, and together we renovated an old house in the "el centro".. Renting my own apartment in Casa Zapoteca, short term through airbnb, gives me the freedom to continue the exploration if only for a few weeks at a time.
