  • Location, Location, Location.

Carlos and Donna's apartment is exactly where you want to be if you're in Oaxaca for a few days (or longer). It's super central (literally a few minutes to walk anywhere) and very cute, with it's own little private patio and fountain. The shared rooftop comes complete with a hammock and is a perfect place to have breakfast.

Carlos was a great host (Donna was away). We arrived with fresh quesillo and beer in the fridge for us, along with some granola and yogurt for breakfast for the first few days. He even was our tour guide and showed us some of the great sites to see outside of Oaxaca.

Definitely stay here if you can.

  • My husband and I stayed for almost one week at Casa Zapoteca and loved it. Donna's apt was extremely comfortable, complete with great art, music and thoughtful supplies in the fridge. Carlos was there to greet us and was very helpful with any questions. The building itself was beautiful and the central location couldn't be better. We will definitely stay here the next time we return to Oaxaca, which is almost yearly.

  • Our eight day stay during Semana Santa at Donna's apartment in Oaxaca was beyond our expectations. The neighborhood is perfectly located near the edge of everything but is nicely quiet. Donna and Carlos were gracious, helpful and friendly hosts (and Gardenia their dog is a sweetie!). Our first floor "owners" apartment is very spacious and wonderfully appointed. The apartment has everything you would ever need; the furniture comfortable and beautifully decorated with textiles and pottery, lots of informative books and maps. We really appreciated the free Wifi, and the beautiful private patio with fountain- off the living room and bedroom space that brings wonderful light into the apartment but not the direct sun, keeping it a cool retreat and wonderful in the daytime and evening. The rooftop patio was a huge extra bonus with its fabulous views, covered shady area and plenty of comfy chairs, a hammock and chairs and table. We ate breakfast every morning upstairs, watched the full lunar eclipse from the roof and spent many evenings relaxing up on the roof patio watching the sunset and gazing into the beautiful botanical gardens across the road. Our hosts were very available for questions and suggestions when needed, and we liked them instantly! Their place is a mini oasis full of plants and art.
Towards the end of our week we rented a car and hired Carlos to drive us south one day and west the next day to the surrounding craft towns, asking him dozens of questions. We were very happy with the many places on our list as well as a few wonderful side trips to places he also suggested. I have no hesitation on returning and renting this apartment, or any of the apartment spaces at this location. Thanks Donna and Carlos for a wonderful authentic Oaxaca experience!

  • A most delightful stay in a most delightful city

The moment we arrived we were warmly met by Donna and Carlos - a wonderful couple who became a source of local knowledge and contact into the vibrant life of this incredible city.
The apartment was elegant and clean, perfectly appointed for an active couple wanting to get the most out of the rich experience that Oaxaca provides.
We arrived late in the evening and were delighted that Donna had provided us with some basic groceries with which to make a good quick meal - and cold beer in the fridge to wash away the road dust!
What a delight it was to spend some relaxing hours each day on the rooftop patio with the abundant plants and well shaded hammock.
Casa Zapoteca is as central as you can be without being in the midst of the hubbub of the busy city. A short walk gets you to great restaurants, live music and of course the action in the Zocalo. If you need to know about more things to do the place was equipped with a comprehensive compendium of brochures and even a laminated list of preferred insider places and attractions. Donna is now a fast friend whose openness and joie de vivre made our stay better than we could have expected.
Carlos is the consummate guardian and caretaker. Friendly and competent, he ceaselessly ensures that the house and all four apartments are running smoothly and that the infrastructure is flawlessly maintained. He helped us to rent a car at a much reduced rate which we took to Puerto Escondido on a brief junket - for which we are eternally grateful. Having driven the often treacherous road himself many times, his advice and observations were welcome. If you are a good, experienced driver I highly recommend that journey.
I would, and have, highly recommend Casa Zapoteca.

  • Staying at the "Casa Zapoteca" in Donna and Carlos"s garden apartment is a great option.
The apartment is in the best place of Oaxaca next to the Centro Cultural Santo Domingo. Everything is close, museums, cafes, the Etnobotanical Garden, and is at the corner of Macedonio Alcalá, a beautiful pedestrian street. You can walk to every interesting place and nearby is a lane highway connecting with interesting towns as St.Agustin Etla. The place is spacious and has everything you need. It feels like being at home.
Donna and Carlos are very friendly and always can help with any advice. They also have the courtesy of having supplies (very generously) in the refrigerator.
Even we are familiarized with Oaxaca we knew some new places with Donna. She walked with us to show us some parts where we have never been.
Oaxaca is a fantastic place and staying at this apartment make the experience even better!
Thanks a lot Donna y Carlos, and Gardenia.

  • We loved staying at Casa Zapoteca. A wonderful
apartment with everything you need, excellent location (and quiet) a few blocks from the action, and wonderful hosts generous with their time and local tips. We particularly enjoyed our day trip to outlying villages with Carlos and his insights. Highly recommended!

  • I had a great experience with this place. Carlos and Donna were wonderful and made my stay a pleasure. Carlos was waiting for me when I arrived at 10:30 on Saturday night, and the fridge was stocked with cheese and tortillas, beer, wine, etc. A very nice welcome. The location of the apartment is perfect - walking distance to everything, but on a quiet street. Carlos was also helpful with setting up my tour of Monte Alban, recommending local restaurants, and arranging my early morning taxi for departure. I also very much enjoyed all the Oaxaca literature provided in the apartment, as well as all the cool coffee table books. I have had various experiences with AirBNB, but Casa Zapoteca is a real winner.

  • Donna and Carlos are wonderful. They were so helpful and went out of their way as hosts. Carlos greeted us at one am and showed us around when we arrived. Thoughtfully, there was food and drink in the fridge for us. Donna has great taste, and the apartment is so cozy and has everything you need. It's also very well located. I will definitely stay here again if I'm in Oaxaca.

About
I came upon Oaxaca in the early seventies while traveling through Mexico and Central America looking at ancient ruins, pottery villages and having the adventure of a lifetime. As the years went by I continued to return to the"Land of Chapulines". It retained its magic. And so, in 1996 I gave up the life I loved in a big city and moved to Oaxaca to live a dream. I met my partner, Carlos, and together we renovated an old house in the "el centro".. Renting my own apartment in Casa Zapoteca, short term through airbnb, gives me the freedom to continue the exploration if only for a few days at a time.
