About This Listing
O’Leary’s Cottage is a charming one bedroom, detached house. The original 1940s stableman’s quarters for the Bette Davis estate Riverbottom. In a private estate, it shares huge grounds, salt water pool, hot tub, horses, chickens, orchard, parking
The cabin is fresh, vibrant and newly refurbished while still maintaining some of its unique, original features. The cool, open living room has high ceilings, exposed beams, white wood floors and original art on the walls.
Named after Humphrey Bogart’s character Micheal O’Leary, the stableman in Davis’ 1939 film Dark Victory; the cabin enjoys a 32” flat screen tv hooked up to both digital cable and Apple TV, there’s wifi throughout the estate.
The LIVING ROOM/KITCHEN has high beamed ceilings. The front door and main windows face the lawn, trees and hammock, and the stable block inhabited by Misty, a little gray pony, and Curly, a gentle giant. The back windows look out over the neighboring horse paddocks and in the far distance, the LA Equestrian Center and the setting sun beyond that. there is a small dining area and a sitting area.
The BEDROOM is small, simple, with a Custom Comfort (very comfortable) queen sized bed. There’s built-in closet/storage area. A small fold out couch at the foot of the bed (that can be used as a second bed) The newly remodeled BATHROOM has a groovy tiled shower and looks out toward the pool.
The unique and historical nature of Rivergate estate make it a lovely oasis to stay in. Rivergate has a number of houses available through Airbnb that enjoy massive organic gardens, almost half acre lawn with an abundance of butterflies and birds, saltwater pool and spa, fire pit, horses and chickens, art studio, fountain area, fruit trees… and Wi-Fi throughout.
We are located just minutes from Hollywood, Los Feliz and the major studios: Warner Bros, NBC, CBS, Disney, Nickelodeon. And all the amenities of Griffith Park on your doorstep. O'Leary's Cabin is a perfect holiday spot and an oasis from work...
O'Leary's Cottage the most private house available, at the far end of long lawn. Griffith Park, and all of its amenities(website hidden) is just outside the gates.
Please don’t let the rural setting and the hooting of the owls fool you, we are still in the heart of the city and you should be aware that you can sometimes hear the freeway, helicopters, dogs and sirens typical of city living. I mention it because it seems out of place while you lounge in the sun on the lawn feeling like you are out in the country.
Interaction with Guests
I live in one of the houses on the estate with my two young children. I take my role as host very seriously. I won the Hero Award from Airbnb in the fall.
I am about most of the time in the middle house to fix any thing or address any questions that may arise.
(please see our other listings at rivergate
the NEIGHBORHOOD upscale and residential. Many of the large houses have private stables and it is common to see cowboys riding in the streets. We are just a few miles from Los Feliz, Silver Lake and Atwater (two exits on the freeway, about 5 minutes). We are bicycling distance from the studios (NBC, CBS, Warner Bros, Disney, Nickelodeon …).
Additionally, there are four golf courses in the park, as well as Travel Town, the LA Zoo, The Autry Museum, several horse riding facilities and playgrounds, Pickwick ice-skating and bowling and of course the wildlife and 52 miles of hiking and horse riding trails in the park.
The City just received a billion dollars and is redeveloping the LA River . There are great cycling trails and running tracks throughout the neighborhood. Downtown Los Angeles is about 15 minutes away, depending a little on the infamous LA traffic (there is a shortcut through the park along Riverside Drive that is very pretty and cuts out some of the traffic).
Burbank and Glendale are home to loads of shopping including the Americana (a high end outdoor mall with fountain, fine restaurants and events). A Pavilions supermarket is one of the finest around and within walking distance.
there is lots of public transport with buses, the subway, and if your feeling frisky, a horse!
for exercise, there are great hiking, cycling and riding trails just out the gates.
Other Things to Note
Boring Legal Things: A 12% Transient Occupancy Tax, imposed by the city of Glendale, has been added to the final cost of the rental room (which we pay to the city). This is supposed to be stated separately as an additional cost to your room rental, however AirBnB does not allow for this option in pricing.
We charge a high cleaning fee. This is for the standard cleaning that we do before each guest and the small repairs, repainting, replacing damaged furniture, rugs, upholstery and minor fixes. We all break things and spill. I find it isn’t very pleasant to have a lovely holiday only to get in to the nitty gritty of broken glasses or wall scratches at the end of it. These things happen and the second half of the cleaning fee goes toward the repairman.
We try to have the pool fence down on the weekends.
Like in the country, if you see a gate open, leave it open, if it is closed, close it after you.
No smoking inside please. If you smoke, please do so outside and use an ashtray. Please empty the ashtray in the outside bins and not in the house
No more than two guests at a time on the property. If you have a group, please ask Amy (phone number hidden)
We share the grounds with other holiday homes. Please be friendly and kind to our other guests. If you have any questions or concerns, please speak with Amy or whomever is managing the property.
Please Use the pool fence gates. They can be a little tricky to operate as they are designed to keep toddlers out. Pull the toggle on the top of the gate up to open. If in frustration you take the fence down, please make sure you put it together again for the sake of the kids on the property. MAKE SURE THE GATE IS COSED AFTER USE and that the pool is secured once you have finished. Again, we have young children on the property and really like them and want to ensure their safety☺
To operate the spa, push the spa on button once on the puck mounted on the wall. There are also buttons for the bubbles and the pool lights. Be patient, if you push the buttons repeatedly the pool gets cross and resets itself☺ if you have an accident or spill something in the pool, please let me know immediately. it can be fixed but it needs to be addressed promptly.
Misty is the pony at the far end of the property; please do not feed her by hand (it can make her bitey). She loves carrots and apples and if you want to feed them just these treats please place in their manger (where the hay is). There is a light switch for the stables just round the corner by the tack room door (watch out for spiders)
Please be considerate of other guests, no noise, music or loud talking after 10.30 or before 7am. Whispering is okay as long as there is kissing involved or there is a full moon ☺
Trash is in the bins down the back alley to the west of the estate. Trash day is Tuesday morning.
Redish for rubbish and trash
Gray for recyclables
Green for grown things.
Please take care of the floors, walls and furniture; some of it is expensive and imported.
Hope this is not to frightening or strict. If you have any questions, issues, problems or recommendations, please let us know.
Our stay was lovely, everything as promised. Our son loved having a horse and chickens nearby and being able to go swimming in the fun pool everyday. Bed is super comfy, kitchen has everything we needed. Amy is a wonderful host. Hopefully we can come back soon!
Thank you! Christian & family
My stay in the Cabin was just as relaxing and restful as in the other house on Amy's property.
The lawn makes it feel like you're staying in a private park. I got to know my other AIRBNB neighbors and everyone seemed to be having a great experience like me.
Clean, quiet, cozy - this unique setting is a perfect retreat.
An oasis escape for those wanting great access to the best of LA.The salt water pool is hard to resist.
Amy was a wonderful host and her cabin was awesome. The area as well, was excellent... peaceful, and quiet with little to no traffic. With my rental, getting around in either the Glendale or Burbank communities was extremely easy.
All in all, my first airbnb experience at her place was an incredible one.
I loved my stay at O'Leary's cottage. The cabin is very simple and clean. It's a really relaxing space to spend some time and get a good night's sleep. The kitchen has just the right stuff for quick little meals or some tea or coffee. The whole property is great as well. I really enjoyed spending time outside on the lawn or in the hammock and going for jogs or walks on the horse trail which you can access through the back gate.
Amy is great as well. She's accommodating and easy going. I have nothing but good things to say about this place and Amy and i'll definitely be back here whenever I'm in LA and it's available.
Amy was so gracious to accommodate my last minute arrival, and I couldn't have been happier with my decision to spend a few days/nights in the cottage. Some words that come to mind to describe the experience: charming, clean, cozy, magical, friendly, serene, warm... Need I say more??
I went for the perfect run/hike in the area, explored Griffith Park on horseback, easily fetched groceries for a chill dinner at home... Everything was perfect.
Thanks again Amy! I can't wait to return.
Amy was an excellent host for our "staycation" (due in part to unexpected home renovations). She was quick to respond and book, especially given the very short notice, and she allowed us to bring cats. And there could be no more beautiful place to stay in the area - it's tucked away near the gorgeous Griffith Park and equestrian areas, but it's also very close to key freeways. The room itself is beautifully-decorated, and has all the basics one would need. The Moroccan accents in the decor and white-wood floors are a perfect touch. Add to that the ample outdoor space, beautiful (saltwater) pool, functioning wifi and electronics, and more, it's really hard to beat such an experience. She was quick to respond to questions and issues as they arose, extending our stay when we needed, yet also gave us privacy. We will be recommending Amy to all our friends who come visit Los Angeles, and may even come back for another staycation! Thanks to the gracious hosts!
