Hidden Garden was a nice retreat off the beaten path. Rachel has built a unique, rustic home, perfect for nature-lovers. The property is a short walk, bike ride or drive to the main shops and cafe's of Puerto Viejo, and Manzanillo. The side streets are pretty dark at night in Puerto Viejo, so pack a flashlight for the walk home. Definitely check out the nearby Pure Jungle Spa for and exceptional open-air massage. We weren't able to participate in a yoga class while we visited, but the yoga deck looks great, and the yoga teacher, Molly, is delightful and welcoming.
This is a very relaxing place just in the middle of the exuberant tropical forest of the costa rican Caribbean. This rustic house has the necessary to stay few days in a "simple-hearted" way. The house is not as closer to the beach as you can wish, and you will probably prefer to have 4x4 vehicle to take to road to the cabin, but you will receive instead beautiful awakenings surrounded by monkeys and birds. Even when I didn't meet Rachel (she was not in CR), the communication via internet was very fluent, she was very kind and did all the possible for us to have some great vacations days.
This place was great and so serene! Puerto Viejo is an amazing place and I would recommend the town and this spot to everyone! If you're wanting a place a little off the beaten path instead of in the thick of town, this is the place. We didn't have a chance to take advantage of the yoga and massages :( but it was great being in the jungle. It was a little hard to find, thank goodness I had a phone number to call once we got to town! I would definitely recommend renting a bike during your stay and have a headlamp/flashlight on hand if you plan to stay out after dark. Check out Tasty Waves for their amazing fish tacos and Cocles beach :)
My visit to Hidden Garden was just what I needed and wanted. I loved the feel of coming to this ccol and magic house located in the middle of the jungle yet close to Purto Viejo. I felt at home from the moment I arrived being welcomed and introduced to Hidden Garden by Rachel.
Rachel is a fascinating and charismatic woman, so knowlegable and willing to share her vast experience and overall competence. I wished I had stayed longer and participated in many of Rachel's exciting offerings. I visited Hidden Garden during off season, the rainy season, so the activity level was low but Rachel willingly offered different options for me to participate in, from morning yoga, tai chi, massage and personal consultations. I also want to mention Rachel's intern, Lara, she was also great!
All in all, I had a great and rewarding time at Hidden Garden (I had some great personal insights by just being there). I loved my room, its sparse yet beautiful wooden styling ( I belive in less is more). Loved walking barefoot on the soft wooden floor or just hanging out in my hammock on my "own" balcony. It was so exciting hearing all the jungle sounds while lying in my comfortable bed. As you can tell, I give Hidden Garden and Rachel my very best recommendations. It was just the perfect place for me and my needs.
Words cannot express how much I appreciate this place. I was made to feel right at home, and honestly, I really never wanted to leave. I only had a week to travel Costa Rica, and had only planned on staying at the Hidden Garden Wellness Center for 2 nights. I ended up spending the entire week minus a couple days. Waking up every morning to the sound of the jungle and sipping coffee in a hammock will really start your day off right. I left a better person (with my feet kicking and dragging). You would be very wise to stay here. I miss it already.
The Hidden garden truly captures the charm of Puerto Viejo. Tucked away in luscious forest, it a treat to city dwellers. Imagine waking up to sip coffee/tea in a hammock watching the birds, butterflies and so many more beauties of nature.
The Garden is well sculpted and is informative: a hike around the property is an adventure by it self. The house is beautiful and has a majestic charm. Two story and full of amenities, its a lovely place for all. The back packers to luxury chasers will love this lovely setup.
Rachel is an excellent host, who is both thoughtful and respectful of the needs of her guest. I will stay at the Hidden Garden again when I go back to Puerto Viejo. Parking was simple and the beach is both walkable and playa manzanillo is excellent. Tons of stuff to do. Make sure to check Koki Beach and Lazy mons all walking distance.
To start Rachael's place is absolutely stunning the pictures are true to form. Racheal is fantastic and there to help you with anything you might need I took part in one of her yoga class's which were great and I also had a massage by another lovely lady that was amazing! I didn't experiance any hot water in the shower and the pressure wasn't great but your In the middle of the jungle so that wasn't at the top of my list! For the most part we had the bathroom to ourselves because the room next door wasn't occupied however a couple did stay for one night and there was some confusion with the locking of the doors. Turns out I was locked out of my bathroom for the day because they had locked it from the inside. But there was a toilet downstairs so wasn't to bad. Overall a beautiful place I had to get used to the insects ie geckos, spiders, and all the other ones I didn't even know the names of. Living in the jungle so couldn't complain was all to be expected. To get to town you have to walk 10 minutes down a dirt road I didn't do this in the dark but a cab is super cheap maybe 3 colones. Be careful where your stepping I did see a baby snake while walking down to town in the day. Would stay here again providing we had the bathroom to ourselves again! X

I am from the United States and have lived in Costa Rica for fifteen years. I love to work with medicine plants and be outdoors in the rainforest.
