We are conveniently located 15 minutes from Oakland International Airport and 30 seconds away from the 580 freeway to San Francisco (20-30 minute drive) and the Highway 13 Parkway to Berkeley (10 minutes). Street parking without time limits is always available. If you don't have a car, the bus stop for buses to downtown Oakland, Berkeley, BART stations, San Francisco (express buses), and the entire Bay Area is four blocks away.

Your room is a welcoming, quiet, restful space with wall-to-wall carpeting. beautiful built-in ash wood dressers and desk (complimentary wi-fi), a plush queen-size bed with allergy-free bedding and luxurious pillows, a full closet and a private bathroom with shower-tub, a mini-fridge (with a complimentary bottle of Chardonnay if you stay for at least two nights), thick terry towels, and an assortment of bath products. Guests also have access to our meditation pond area and a beautiful patio overlooking a garden and fruit tree orchard sheltered by giant heritage oak trees.

The Neighborhood

We live in a middle class, integrated residential neighborhood. It is close to Mills College and Holy Name College. Easy access to freeways I-580 and !3. It is a hilly by walkable, safe area. Since we are located in an urban area in Oakland, caution should be exercise at all times.

Getting around

A direct bus to San Francisco stops four blocks away from our home every hour. Since our neighborhood is nested between two freeways, going in and out of the area is easy and speedy.

  • This was my first AirBNB experience and it was a wonderful one! It was like a bed and breakfast! Everything was perfect: the house, the room, the restroom, the food, and the hosts!

They were extremely accommodating and I look forward to more AirBNB experiences because of them.

  • Very enjoyable room to stay in, clean and comfortable in a very safe area of town! Excellent breakfast to start your day! Easy in and off ramp from the interstate! The only minus was no TV to watch after a long day of traveling/sightseeing. Highly recommended to all who visit the San Fran and surrounding areas!!

  • We had a lovely stay with Janaka and Dan in their lovely house on the hill. From the thoughtful touches of hospitality to the inviting energy of their home, it was the perfect place to come back to after our days of exploring the Bay Area. I recommend their place to anyone!

  • I was nervous about using airbnb for our first time. I read the reviews and saw pictures of Dan and Janaka's place and we decided to give it a try.

Our first experience was amazing! My concern was that the room would accommodate my man who is 6'9". The bed was so comfortable we slept like babies. Having a private bathroom was great and gave us the privacy we needed. Even though we had our privacy Janaka was just a text away to help us with anything we needed.

Janaka greeted us when we came it late with a warm smile. Then Dan made us an incredible breakfast in the morning. We enjoyed the breakfast in their serene and beautiful backyard that was a perfect way to start our day.

Next time I'm in the San Fran area I will definitely stay at Dan and Janaka's. Not only are they great hosts but now they are friends. I highly recommend their place to anyone.

They go out of their way to make you more comfortable and are so easy to talk to! You will surely enjoy this experience.

  • It´s been a pleasure to stay at Dan and Janaka´s House. Both had been lovely and helpful. They made sure that I felt welcome and at home. They provided me with everything I needed during my stay, they even put flowers on my meals. :) I loved staying there. Thanks for having me Dan and Janaka.

  • We very much enjoyed our stay with Janaka and Dan! Their room was clean and lovely. The front entrance and backyard were flourishing with greenery and flowers. There was also a patio table and chairs for backyard dining.
The bed and pillows were very comfortable. There were plenty of drawers to put our things and a closet to hang our clothes and put our luggage. The bathroom had a good shower, sink, and a small refrigerator. The water was good!
There was also privacy. A screen sectioned the area off from the rest of the house. Since we weren't around much, we communicated with them by leaving a note on a table outside our room, or we could call them by telephone or texting. Each day we had a menu to choose from for our breakfast, which usually consisted of juice, toast with butter and jelly or croissant, and tea or coffee. Other possibilities were available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner were available if desired.
Their location was close to everything that we wanted to do. We highly recommend their bed and breakfast. We definitely would stay here again! Janaka and Dan were wonderful hosts!

  • I had an amazing time staying with Janaka & Dan, from making sure we had everything we needed to an amazing welcome by Dulce Maria their cute dog. Additionally the room was clean, good decorations that made it feel cozy, I liked the table set for breakfast and the cozy bench by the window, nice neighborhood. Definitely a must stay when I go back to Oakland :)!! Thank you Dan & Janaka you made the holiday weekend even better.

Hello! We're Janaka and Danny, and we're always delighted to welcome guests to our home, our refuge-by-the-Bay. We are confident that, as you step over our threshold, the peace and tranquility of being home will wash over you as it does us. Our house is a special place for many reasons, not the least of which is that it's the home that Dan was born to in 1948. Dan is executive chef, provisioner, and musician for the enterprise here. He also consults in the fields of education, children's social development, museum & exhibit design, and organizational development. In the seven years we've been together, Janaka has brought his special love and flair for color, calm, and gardens to all corners of our house and its surrounds. When he's not painting a wall a particularly lovely shade, he's painting singular water color pictures (some of which you will find hanging in your room), or providing interpretation services and meditation instruction for injured workers. We are grateful to be a home of peace and hospitality; we look forward to your being here soon to experience it for yourself.
