Connemara, Galway Bay, By The Sea

Bed & Breakfast - Private room · Cor na Ron Lair, Connemara, Galway, Ireland

Right beside the sea, just 200 metres up from the shore, with a sandy cove ideal for swimming. View of Galway Bay, Aran Islands and The Burren. Close to ferry for Islands. Spiddal village with traditional Irish music, 5 mins. away, Galway 30 mins.

The Space

Imagine hearing the sound of waves from your bedroom, smelling the salt when you open the window, seeing Galway Bay so close up, you can reach the shore in 2 mins! A view awaits you from every window, look over the water to the Burren Hills, the Cliffs of Moher in the distance, and the Aran Islands' white sand beaches on the skyline.
You'll have an En suite bedroom, with large picture window onto the garden a small annex adjoining with desk and wifi connection. Front door entrance.

Come for two nights, and in the morning, I'll take you to the ferry for the Aran Islands, (Rosaveel) where you can explore for the day. Then I'll collect you on return, let you freshen up and drop you to Spiddal where you can have a real Italian pizza, try a Guinness in a traditional pub, possibly hear some music. Or drive to Barna to enjoy more gourmet fare!

This is a modern house by the beach. It is open plan onto a south facing sun-room with large windows and wonderful views. The garden is spacious and has outdoor seating. It has always been grown organically without the use of chemicals. There are no cats, so the bird-song is a delight.

Located on a quiet side road that leads to a sandy cove, we are well positioned for leisurely sea-side strolls or more sprightly walks around the bog. For serious hikers the Connemara hills are nearby. There are many small rivers and lakes that are good for fishing and there are two golf courses.

As this is a Gaeltacht area, Irish is the 1st spoken language, (now most people are bi-lingual). A vibrant culture exists still, in music, dance, theatre etc. Each week-end in summer there are racing festivals of traditional boats along with festivals of traditional music.

It’s an area to savor, to absorb slowly. Meander down small roads, be surprised by the extraordinary clarity of the light, the photographic reflections in bog pools. Come prepared to explore, to discover, forget about being a tourist!

Personal background;
In my early days I studied Arts at University College Galway, graduated with a BA and Dip Ed.

I taught at secondary level for some years, in the UK, Ireland and Australia.

In the mid 80s I again became a full-time student and did a visual arts diploma, specializing in Stained-Glass. From then I worked free-lance giving courses and working commissions.

While living in Australia in the 80s, I bought a Victorian cottage in the Blue Mountains, NSW (which I enjoyed renovating) and ended up staying 10 years.

On my return to Ireland I settled first in the Burren, where again I undertook renovations of a run-down cottage and then with that experience designed my current house, (built from scratch) which has nothing old in it!

Four years ago, I returned to my Alma Mater and did an MA in Writing. I’ve since had some modest success writing poetry and short-stories.

I’ve traveled widely in South East Asia, the US and Europe and very much enjoy sharing traveler's tales.

  • I was staying at Davnet's with my wife. We had a lovely time and were made to feel very welcome. The house overlooks the sea and is brilliantly located if you want to explore Connemara. And Galway city is just down the road. Davnet is really interesting. Would definitely stay with her again.

  • I stayed at Davnets house with my boyfriend for two nights. Her house is perfect located to go to Inishmore by ferry. The house is nearby the sea and it's comfortable. Davnet and her daughter were nice hosts and very friendly. We had a few nice chats with them. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend staying with Davnet to everyone.

  • Davnet has a lovely, tranquil house by the ocean. Davnet is very welcoming and offers good advice about going to the Aran Islands as well as nearby restaurants. She provides a lovely light breakfast and makes a strong cup of coffee. A wonderful place to stay to see the Connemara region and the Aran Islands.

  • Davnet was very friendly and a great host. We enjoyed our time in peaceful Connemara. She recommended good places to hike, eat, and sight see. Best of all she even played (and won) a game of cards with us. House and garden are pretty and quiet. Overall a relaxing and charming experience.

  • we very much enjoyed our stay with Davnet. I was there with my mum. Davnet was very helpful, authentic and interesting. She lives close to the sea, not far away from Galway, calm! We loved how she painted her rooms - with warm colours!
Together we were sitting on the terrasse, enjoying the warm evenings, drinking red wine, having nice conversations and listening to the waves....
I really estimated, that she was trusting us! She went out while we could "live" at her home! We felt like "welknown" guests.
At first, we did not find her place. It was impossible! But never mind, because Ireland's people are extremely friendly and helpful!
I would love to come again!

Hi, I'm Davnet, a nature-loving, outdoor person, fairly well traveled in Europe, Sth East Asia, and Australia. I'm particularly interested in cultural exchange, customs, language, and cuisine. And enjoy sharing traveler's tales. I speak Irish, French (rustily), and Spanish (rustily). Mostly I work in the Arts, I do Stained-Glass commissions. Currently I'm writing. I adore theatre, and also enjoy contemporary dance. In summer I swim daily in our beautiful sandy cove at the bottom of the road. My other outdoor pursuits are gardening, and walking, and there are many beautiful places in this area to explore.
