Las Vistas, SantaCruz, Lake Atitlan

House - Private room · Santa Cruz la Laguna, Solola, Guatemala

The Space

Las Vistas, an architectural gem of a round house, with a central courtyard open to the sky above, provides spectacular views in every direction of mountains, lake, volcanoes, gardens, and the amazing Lake Atitlan sky. It has rightfully been called one of the most spectacular homes on the most beautiful lake in the world.

This waterfront, private home, on the north shore of the lake, is an easy five-minute walk from the Santa Cruz dock and a 15 minute boat ride from Panajachel. Although just minutes from the town’s restaurants and attractions, it is secluded and peaceful – an oasis in paradise.

This beautiful home is decorated throughout with Guatemalan textiles, sculptures, masks, paintings, photographs and ceramics. Orchids, tropical plants and fresh cut flowers bring the beauty of the gardens inside.

The guest room, with a separate entrance, has a queen-sized bed, walk-in closet, and a secluded private porch with hammocks. A loft with queen-sized bed is perfect for 2 extra adult guests or older children.

The master bathroom (shared with your host) includes a large soaking tub (with a view to the stars), indoor/outdoor solar-heated shower and a tropical garden and is accessible directly from the guest room.

The rest of the house and magnificent garden is open for your use and includes a fully equipped kitchen and dining room (for snacks or light cooking), living room with fireplace, wrap around porch, rooftop terrace, palm-roofed patio at the water’s edge, washer/dryer, half bath, 2 kayaks with life jackets, and a private dock for swimming or sunbathing. Free WiFi internet access is available throughout the house and porch.

Las Vistas is the perfect place from which to explore Santa Cruz and the other villages around Lake Atitlan, hike or climb volcanoes, go bird watching, learn to dive, take Spanish lessons, go to a yoga or weaving class, get a massage or take day trips to other Guatemalan attractions. Or just sit back and enjoy the views. Your host is happy to connect you with tourist activities as well as shuttles and private boats as needed.

  • My husband and I stayed at Las Vistas 4 nights last week. It was one of our best experiences with AirBnB. Before our arrival, Jeanne sent us a very detailed and precise letter with tips how to get to her house. If you have a lot of luggage, just pay an extra 5-10Q to the captain of the boat and ask him to drop you off at Las Vista’s private dock. BUT you have to look for Jeanne’s house yourself and point it out to the captain. Jeanne is incredibly hospitable, friendly and knowledgeable about the Lake Atitlan area. Her house is very clean, artistically designed and aesthetically pleasant. We appreciate that Jeanne sent us to Alicia and Maria’s house in Santa Cruz La Laguna for authentic dinners and cooking classes. If someone else goes there I would recommend that you ask for the pepian chicken - the sauce is the best. Jeanne helped us to book all our transfers. After being at Jeanne’s house for only 4 days I got several special decorating ideas for my own house in the USA - the faja (traditional Mayan hand made woman’s belt) display in her bathroom is the best! Jeanne took some pictures of us while we were kayaking and right now one of those pictures is on my (website hidden). We are planing another trip to Guatemala in October and definitely will stay again with Jeanne!

  • We loved our stay at Las Vistas in Santa Cruz. Our host Jeanne, was very hospitable and just plane nice. We arrived early and even though she wasn't quite ready for us she greeted us warmly and made us feel comfortable right from the start. Her round house is filled with local art and textiles and really immerses you in the Guatemalan culture. Her breakfasts with locally made fresh yogurt and fruit and thick brown bread were a great, healthy way to start off our days. Her entire yard is one giant garden that was filled with hundreds of plants and flowers and butterflies. It was just beautiful. Jeanne helped us plan our day trips and made reservations at some restaurants and secured a private shuttle back to Guatemala City for us. This was really helpful since we didn't speak Spanish. She also arranged for us to have dinner with a local family. Besides being delicious it was an insightful experience, especially for my teenage children who are quite sheltered from the reality of poverty and how prevalent it is. This host family gave so much with a genuine spirit of kindness. It was a memorable meal. I'd highly recommend Jeanne and her "round house" to anyone looking for a shared space.

    Response from Jeanne:

Oh thanks so much, Sandy! It was great for me as well! Hope to see you all again soon. You'll always be welcome.

  • My mom and I had an amazing time during our stay at Las Vistas! I couldn't have imagined a more beautiful setting to wake up to each morning. It was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Guatemala! The gardens at Las Vistas are out of this world, and we spent many hours just chilling on the porch, coffee in hand, watching and listening to the birds while staring out at the lake and volcanoes. And just wait till you use the outdoor shower! You'll never want to leave :) Jeanne was a fabulous host. We really enjoyed getting to know her (and her three lovable dogs!). She had lots of great advice about things to see around the lake as well as other areas of the country. I would definitely stay here again. Thanks Jeanne for the amazing stay!!

Thanks so much Laura! It was really great to have you and your mom stay at Las Vistas! Come back soon! Jeanne

  • The round house is out of this world and the view is fantastic. The gardens are the best I have experienced in all the places I have stayed in Guatemala! Jeanne was fun and pleasant to talk to. She was a very helpful and attentive host. She made shuttle arrangements for us, and made suggestions on places to visit and made dinner reservations for us when needed. She made sure that we had everything we needed and gave us a good home tour upon arrival.
The breakfast and morning coffee was delicious and very much appreciated. Laying out on the dock and soaking up the sun with the view of the volcanoes and lake were amazing. The best part of my visit was Jeanne's outdoor shower.
Beware, you may never want to leave this piece of paradise! I highly recommend Las Vistas!

  • I highly recomend visiting Santa Cruz and if you do, you won't find a better place to stay then at Las Vistas with host Jeanne Mendez. Her home is absolutely breath taking and has such a positive and relaxing vibe to it. Jeanne was such a lovely host, and was very helpful when we needed help to plan our activities and means of transportation. We were so happy that we decided to stay at Las vistas, it made our trip to Guatemala a more memorable one.

Thanks so much Roxanne. It was a delight to have you and Luca stay here. Come back and stay longer next time!

  • We felt very privileged to have met Jeanne and stayed in her fabulous house for a few days. Jeanne is a lovely host : we felt very welcomed the moment we stepped in Las Vistas and we really enjoyed getting to know her and her friends. She made sure to arrange everything we needed before / during and after our stay and suggested really special places to go to during the day and in the evenings. The house itself is like something out of a dream, it's a perfectly round house filled with light and gorgeous views over the Atitlan lake and the volcanoes. Our room was very cosy and comfortable with a private terrace featuring 2 addictive hamocks and direct access to the most gorgeous bathroom (including a bath tub where you can gaze at the stars. Las vistas has been beautifuly decorated with unique pieces from local villages and stunning bespoke furniture from local craftmen. The landscaped garden is a work of art all on its own. Pablo, the gardener has created a gorgeous burst of colours and textures and the result is stunning, there's even a giant avocado tree at the back of the house so make sure you walk around! There are also 2 kayaks that Jeanne let us borrow, it was so much fun to paddle in the lake and the view of the house from the water is the most spectacular!
We had a wonderful time and can't recommend staying with Jeanne highly enough, we will definitely be back and hopefully for a longer stay!

  • Jeanne is a lovey woman as is her incredible round home filled with art! We enjoyed our stay and her great suggestions. Best Santa Cruz garden 2014! Our hammocks on her back porch were like being in the rain forest.
