Historical Cong

Cong, nestling on the shores of Lough Corrib offers a wealth of history and unspoilt natural beauty that once seen is never forgotten.

Spectacularly situated on the shores of Lough Corrib, Cong is one of the most beautiful and historic villages in Ireland. It owes its special character to its location on an island in the middle of the River Cong. It owes its name to the isthmus or 'narrows' from the Irish word cunga, which separates Lough Mask and Lough Corrib, two of the finest wild trout fisheries in Europe.

The rising of waters at Cong and the myriad of underground streams and Caverns beneath the area has captivated people for millennia. Congs strategic location has drawn hunter-gatherers, farmers, soldiers, kings, monks and adventurers for almost 7000 years.

There are many Archaeological sites & Caves to be discovered around Cong and the surrounding area that we would be happy to show you.

  • The house was wonderful and the garden magnificent. We had a terrific time. Everything we needed was in the house. The location is wonderful, a quite and very green country road, with a short walk to the lakeshore, a quick drive to cong and great location for exploring Connemara and Mayo.
Jonathan and his wife were really nice, welcoming and helpful when we locked the keys into the house. Highly recommend this house.

  • A beautiful home in a gorgeous setting down a lovely country lane. Very clean and well appointed with everything we needed except Wi-Fi which didn't worry me, but it did the others we were travelling with.

  • We loved the Period House, it was so well maintained and was in such a natural and serene setting. The house itself was so comfortable with everything we needed and more. Our hosts were great, so helpful and accommodating. Our only regret is we weren't able to spend more time. Two nights were not enough, so much to see and great nearby villages to roam.

  • A beautiful place to stay. Jonathan and Siobahn were great hosts. We arrived from New York to start our vacation and visit relatives in the Mayo area. The house and grounds are inviting - you feel very much at home. We highly recommend this home and hope to return soon. June 2013

  • A lovely place which felt like a home from home. We enjoyed every minute of our stay. My wife and I returned back to Dublin feeling revitalised and relaxed. I look forward to our next visit to enjoy some great walks, fantastic local sights and the relaxed atmosphere that this place and the surrounding area has to offer. Worth every penny.
