  • Mark and I loved staying in Gilberto's house. We have wanted to come to Oaxaca for a long time, and I, as a former resident of Latin America, have missed this part of the world.
The house is full of wonderful artistic touches, which makes it very special. In addition, the location is perfect. It is in Xochimilco, just on the edge of the historic zone and Xochimilco is really like a small village on its own. On Friday and Saturday there is the wonderful Ponchito organic market in the churchyard 2 blocks from the house. Just doors away is a coffee shop and a hairdresser I loved (I have long hair) 2 more doors down. It couldn't have been more convenient. We cooked a lot at Gilberto's and the kitchen was well supplied. We found Gilberto to be very gracious and accommodating about everything. So much so that we plan to return next year.

  • If you're wondering if you should book this house, the answer is definitively YES! Truly a beautiful house in a beautiful city! It's safe, easy and a thrilling experience!

  • Gilberto's house in the beginning of Xochimilco is lovely, charming, and comfortable. We had everything we needed to make our 2 weeks delightful. We really like Gilberto's taste and the quirky art made it even more special. The baker up the road even made special gluten-free bread for me. The outdoor patio, though small, was a great place to have coffee in the morning and relax whenever needed. The house is close enough to most things to make it easy to come home and rest for a bit mid-day if you like. Noise was not an issue. Pochote market is 2 blocks away and is a wonderful place for comida, shopping, people watching. Don't miss the children's library up the road. Alex was very helpful, checked in on us mid-stay, and even got up early on a Sunday to be sure we had a taxi coming to take us back to the airport. I would definitely stay at Gilberto's again!

  • Gilbertos department was a real unique and cozy place. We did fully enjoy our stay there and would highly recommend it to travelers which like "home comfort" away from home. We did stay in the first of the six little houses which can be a little bit noisy since it is kind of close to a main street of Oaxaca but not overly disturbing. We would definitveley come back. Alex, the person who did receive us upon our arrival, was also very nice and helpfull thoughout the whole week. A place to stay!! Thank you

  • I expected to enjoy my stay at Gilberto's place simply based on the comments made by previous visitors. What I did not expect was the kind and generous welcome I received at my arrival. Everything, truly, everything was incredibly beautiful. From the exposed brick and electrical piping offering an artistic expression to the pieces showcased in every corner of the apt, I was constantly surrounded by inspiration from a thriving cultural community. I had the honor of sharing an evening of intense global conversation with Gilberto and friends that could have only been experienced this apartments atmosphere.
Aside from the apartments endless charm, it is situated in the heart of the city allowing easy access to city's many attractions.
Oaxaca will surely be missed, I can only hope others are able to enjoy the same experience I did at Gilberto's place. Saludos.

  • Gilberto's house was great! The location was the best. It was only four blocks to Santo Domingo Church and from there six more blocks to the Zocolo. One day we decided to walk north and found a great bakery very close to the house. They had delicious brownies! We had a great time visiting the city and the surrounding archeological sites and villages.

  • We had a great stay at Gliberto's apartment in Oaxaca. The apartment is spacious, clean, nicely decorated and appointed with everything you need for a comfortable temporary home. It is in a great location, near restaurants, cafes and about 10 minutes from the Zocolo. Gilberto's nephew, Alex, was very helpful and available when we had any questions. We would absolutely stay here again when we return to Oaxaca.

  • Alex's house is wonderful!

Location: Nine blocks from the Zocalo along lovely cobblestoned streets that run beside an ancient aquaduct. Half a block from a cafe called Tutuma where we heard live music and singing. About five easy blocks from the beautiful children's museum ((website hidden))
and about two more blocks to a drop-off laundromat.
Two long blocks from a grocery store called Pitico and a delicious taqueria on Ninos Heroes (just south of Office Max, you'll see the meat roasting out front, opens up later in the day). A little further and you're at an excellent queserillo, about where the streets Macedonio Alcala and Diaz Quintas meet.
Five blocks from La Iglesia de Xochimilco which hosts an organic market Friday and Saturday from 8 am - 3:30 pm.

Practicality: Double bed in one room, two twin beds in another room, daybed in the living room. Well appointed kitchen had everything we needed including gas stove, large fridge, microwave. Wifi included with good speed/connection. Enclosed, private patio. Shower is reasonably hot (and I like it HOT) and we found that it was hotter for the second shower than it was for the first showerer. The house shares a small, gated parking area/entrance with five other casitas/condos. These are working Oaxacans who are quiet and lock the gate up behind them. The house is a block from the busy Ninos Heroes avenue, but we were not bothered by street noise at all.

Style: Big points for the modern, artistic and pleasing style.

Caution: Be sure you have worked out arrival time with Gilberto before hand. The house is advertised as flexible check-in, but you will need to arrange to meet with someone to get the keys which can be tricky at midnight (though it did work out for us).

The doors and windows do not completely seal shut which is fine except that mosquitoes can get in. You might want to bring a mosquito coil or bug lotion, depending on how bothered by that you are -- we are paranoid about mosquitoes after getting Dengue Fever in Indonesia.

  • Beautiful little apartment walking distance to everything, great organic market up the hill on the weekend. Gilberto the host and his nephew Alex are both lovely people and really helpful. Love the chairs hanging from the ceiling and all the creative touches in the flat. Definitely recommend this place as a base for a visit to the wonderful Oaxaca, we hope to come back one day soon.

  • We really loved this place! The house is lovely and comfortable. The neighborhood is great - quiet but close to the downtown scene. Easy walking to all sorts of things to do, to see and to eat!!
The cafe across the street has great coffee and breakfasts.
We enjoyed the Festival of Guelaguetza, the crowds, the parades, then relaxed at the house.
    Thanks Gilberto and Alex!
