Other Things to Note
It's a beautiful house, and very quiet and peaceful. It would be great for a family or several friends traveling together, particularly a group that had rented a car or bicycles. It is in between Puerto Viejo and Playa Chiquita so there are lots of options for things to do. There is some beach access that's a 5-10 minute walk, though the larger beaches are a bit of a trek. Easily done with a vehicle or bike however.
The Mermaid house, its owner, and property caretakers are wonderful and exhibit hospitality beyond measure. We originally wanted to check-in on a Friday. However, we attempted to make the drive from San Jose to Playa Chiquita at night - needless to say it was an unwise move to drive through a mountainous rain forest at night, so we turned back. Thankfully, David and the caretakers Gilbert and Joleni were flexible. We checked-in that Saturday and stayed for two days. The house is a short drive and medium walk from Playa Chiquita. It is a true jungle house; you will be amazed when night falls and wildlife wakes up to play. There is plenty of space as well. Larger groups should be aware that the downstairs portion of the house is open and not enclosed like the upstairs section. Rooms(bedroom, bathroom, laundry room, door to upstairs) are separated by a semi-outdoors portion that might surprise the urban-minded traveler. Overall it was a wonderful experience and I would recommend it to any travelers to the Caribbean side of Costa Rica.
This was as described, in a jungle setting. VERY hard to find in the dark. Once we found it, no problems finding again. The caretaker and his wife only speak Spanish, NO English. They are very nice people, they strove to make our stay a comfortable one. Beach access was not close, need to walk/drive into Playa Chiquita for public entrance to beach. We preferred driving back to Playa Cocles, bigger beach, more lunch options, bathrooms, cool vibe. Kitchen/Dining Room/Living Room/Master Bedroom/Bath are upstairs. The second bedroom and bathroom are downstairs outside, need to be locked separately. Not ideal for little children. Couches in living room are comfortable enough for adolescents to sleep on. Since this is a jungle setting and the house is an open format, there were bugs/ants/salamanders/spiders. No air conditioning, but we were comfortable at night. We had some issues with the appliances, repair man was to come the day we departed, I'm sure the problems will be addressed. Due to the poor weather conditions, we weren't able to snorkel during our stay. If you do want to snorkel, I suggest Bad Bart at Aquamor down at Manzanillo. He advised the conditions weren't good while we were there. Very nice, helpful. The best food in the area is south toward Manzanillo at a place called El Refugio. You'll need reservations, there are only 5 or 6 tables, but the food is unbelievably good. We also loved the mexican food at Tasty Waves Cantina in Playa Cocles.
We really enjoyed the house, it was perfect for a family acompanied with a friend. Everything was as described, we had a wonderful christmas at mermaid house. Thanks
The Mermaid House was a great place to stay. The big open windows allowed for great views of the lush trees and greenery surrounding the house. It was hard to find in the dark but once found it was easy to find our way back to. The groundskeeper was very helpful. It was a beautiful place to stay with only a few minutes drive to puerto viejo and playa Chiquita. There are markets very close by as well. Overall it was a very nice place to stay!
This is our second trip to the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica. We are a middle age couple (our party days are well behind us) and we chose Playa Chiquita for its beauty, location and tranquil setting. It is 10 minutes by bike or a $10 taxi ride down the road from Puerto Viejo. PV is a good size town with intra-country transportation (bus to San Jose for $10) and all services one might possibly need. It has a party / town Hard Rock Cafe kind of feel, and while that is fun for a night or two we were looking for a more natural and quiet setting overall. The Playa Chiquita area offers everything needed for everyday living. An abundance of cute patio restaurants in all price categories is a few steps down the road, as is a supermarket with a surprising stock of gourmet items. The area can be easily managed on bicycle – there was one on site and plenty of places to rent additional ones. The beaches are stunning, with hardly a soul on them in places and the water feels like bathwater. A resident of California I must say it has been quite a while since I frolicked in the water for hours. There are a few tours that can be booked but we did not do much other than hang out at the Mermaid House and the beach, exploring on foot and bike and enjoying the natural setting Mermaid House is set back from the beach road on a large lot. It is completely surrounded by jungle without any civilization visible and you think you are living in a tree house. The on-site care-taker is very helpful to have, although rudimentary Spanish skills might be useful. Worst case scenario you can always call the owner, David, from the house phone and he will help you right away. Although we did not stay long enough to need it, housekeeping services can be arranged with the care-taker’s wife. I would totally take advantage of that as the place was spotless when we arrived. We were pleasantly surprised to find that MH was solid construction like one is used to from CA. The upstairs main area is beautifully appointed and features amazing ceilings and windows on all sides. Two balconies invite you to sit and have a beer or tropical cocktail whilst reading a book or iPad (wifi is fast and reliable), all the while spying for colorful toucans, magical butterflies, slow moving sloths or howler monkeys in the trees. It seems that this is someone’s home rather than a vacation rental. The kitchen has granite countertops and stainless steel appliances, leather furniture, etc. The size of the bedroom is impressive. The bathroom is beautiful with an oversized jaccuzzi tub. How often do you get to take a bath in the tree-tops in the jungle? The only thing was that the flapper thing on the toilet kept sticking, but I am sure that is an easy fix....
