  • We wanted a place of our own for a week on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica and we're so glad we chose Playa Chiquita. During our stay we visited the other local towns which were either too backpakery (Playa Viejo). Manzanillo and Coccles just didn't seem to have that friendly, small community feel Chiquita does.

Mermaid is situated amongst the trees in what feels like the jungle (toucans and monkeys in the trees!), yet is the perfect combination of secluded and easily accessible to the beach and local amenities. The house is architecturally beautiful. The light streaming in the main bedroom is in itself a sight to behold!

The main part of the house being on the upper level means that 2 balconies, with hammocks, work as viewing platforms to the amazing wild life on either side of the house. Whilst there is a garden table and 4 chairs downstairs also, to enjoy dinners cooked in the self catering kitchen. A shop nearby stocks everything from picnic ingredients to bikes. There are 5-6 restaurants/cafe's in walking distance of the house for dinner. (Jungle Love was god value for money)

The idyllic tree lined beach is 5 mins walk away from Mermaid. It's breathtakingly beautiful, but best (at least in February) for paddling and swimming in the shallows and sun bathing of course. We would occasionally cycle to Manzanillo in the late afternoon to catch the last of the sun, which would disappear behind the trees on Playa Chiquita (in Feb around 3.30pm).

    Things to note are...
-Currently there is little WIFI in Playa Chiquita.
-Hire bikes from the local shop but always lock them up.
-Be sure to visit the Jaguar Sanctuary 5 mins cycle away.
    and
-Learn the Spanish for 'Sloth Sanctuary' before you catch the Mepe bus to it, just past Cahuita. (you can just flag it down on the street outside the house- handy!) It's definitely worth the visit!

Mermaid's caretaker is very helpful, although basic Spanish will assist with communicating as he speaks very little English. David the owner was happy to assist in anyway possible, via phone or online. Our stay was wonderful and very memorable, choosing to stay here was the best decision of our trip- enjoy!
