About this listing
A cozy and comfortable stay with Nepalese family fulfilling your basic need in Nepal.
Alvin's Room was named after the room was transformed from storage space to accommodate my close friend Alvin Tai from Seatle, USA who was in Nepal on a business trip for a week. We used artifacts and handicrafts to decorate the room traditionally while keeping it simple.
Conveniently located in the heart of Kathmandu valley and just a minute walk from all major public transportation. Nearby restaurants, banks, and grocery shops.
Short walk to airport, some of the Word Heritage Sites, short &easy bicycle ride to all major attractions (Historical Palaces, Temples, Stupas, Monastries and popular Tourist Hangouts).
We have had many friends from abroad spending their time in our house because of the warmth and location. You will get to blend with our family, taste Nepali food and experience the culture just the way it is for us everyday. We treat you like our own family.
We will assist you along your tour in negotiating costs for excursions and adventures to make it fun and memorable while making it most reasonable. We'll provide you a sim card for your telephone need (cost to be born by you).
At no additional cost, we'll serve you three cups of tea everyday, you can learn how to cook Nepali food and we'll give you Nepali Lessons for as long as you stay with us at a time convenient to both you and a member of our family.
For additional guest (there will be a cleaning fee of 10 dollars if your stay is for a week). If you stay for long time, you will be responsible for the cleaning of room and everything else you use.

Water and electricity is of scarce in Kathmandu so we request all the guests to use them wisely.
Our house rule is no different than your own. Just be respectful to the culture and tradition. We request those who stay longer to clean their room from time to time (Disposing Trash from Kitchen use and toilets properly in the bins, taking them out to the trash collector in the morning who comes two to three times a week) and also contribute in water and electricity as well as gas use if you use the gas oven to cook food.
Please also clean the toilets and kitchen properly after using them. We keep it clean for all.
Smoking is only allowed in the roof and open spaces.
Suraj, Resu, and their son TinTin were completely warm and welcoming during my 2.5 day stay in Kathmandu. Suraj gave me all the knowledge I needed to go where I wanted to go, and he was always willing to answer questions. The house is conveniently located near the airport, and there are banks/restaurants within walking distance. And the tea Suraj served me was amazing!
If you are traveling to Kathmandu, this place should definitely be an option for you. The airbnb service as a whole seems like a more genuine experience as opposed to staying by yourself in a guesthouse/hotel.
I would like to stay with this family as long as I could. The room is not very big but the family has given me the biggest room to widen my horizontal and to broaden my mind. Additionally, being inspired by them I began to rent my room in Airbnb since coming back to China and I would always think of Suraj, Resu, Thintin and Neeru to encourage myself to be as a good host as they are and will come back to them in the future.
After spending one month with this family, I could say that they eventually became my family.
They did looked me out in every aspect, from daily life to my Nepali language course, from listening to my troubles to sharing their insight views, they were truly from and beyond my expectation of a perfect host in Airbnb.
When the horrible 8.1 magnitude earthquake happened, I was in Thamel, trembling and distressing, it was the reconnection with them brought the end of my fear.
I would never forget the sweet song which were singing by Resu to feed and lull Thintin to sleep at that time when we were threaten by continuing aftershocks. Resu's song were absolutely the relief to all of us. I would always appreciate Suraj's effort to find me a private Nepali and Sanskrit tutor, I felt that he's pretty resourceful to solve any problems I might have in Nepal, and I was quit sure he's the one I could trust right after the first few online connections. I also spent a lot time with their cousin- Neeru, whose house is closely opposite Suraj's place and was available for staying as another Airbnb room. Neeru is a peaceful listener and keeps everyone's interest in her heart, I always felt refreshing just by walking around with her. Interpersonal trust were built up naturally within this family, and you are expected to experience the truly Nepal by joining them. That is Never End Peace And Love.
Suraj, Resu, Thintin, Neeru, I would come back to you for sure, please take care and keep in touch. Undoutedly, you were stronger than earthquake, and will be there backing others up as always. ---- Xiao Niu
This family is highly qualified to be an Airbnb host and extremely endearing to be a home in trip. In fact, I would like to call them " My Family". Suraj is the one leading us toward the truly Nepal, from visiting his big family to listening to his insight of the better water usage in Nepal. Resu is a super-woman in my heart, by having lots of full and frank conversation with her, I found that she was manly enough to support the entire family and virtuous as well to warm everybody. Thintin, their little kid, never failed to refresh me in any situation and I would call him my little Nepali princess, and they are, as a whole, from and beyond a perfect host I could imagine in my vacation.
My heart was pounding fiercely with Nepal earthquake again when I received an email from Neeru, my dear host and sister, three days ago. With thousands of words to say at one moment, I felt deprived the power of speech for a long while. That is why I have not replied to her till now. Although It has been ten days since shaking, I still worried that the quake has not been completely gone and my Nepali friends would be threaten again. Ever since coming back to China from Kathmandu three days after quake, the one-month simplified life in Nepal has been passing before my eyes, which recalled my reluctance to leave there even when I had been camped for 3 consecutive nights to avoid the jolting series of aftershocks. I always pray for the life, but never feel as strongly as this moment, My dear Neeru, Resu, Suraj, Thintin, Kesav, Saru, Clen, and all I have know and unknown, what is happening to you is flowing to my veins, so please stay safe and strong, I would be back to you with Namaste!
Suraj en his family made us feel right at home. We had a great time en definitely recommend staying here!
Everything was perfect during my stay with suraj and resu and I honestly couldn't have asked for anything more. Both extremely kind and genuine people and they made me feel a part of their wonderful family as soon as I walked into their home. You would definitely be missing out on a great experience if you don't get the chance to stay at suraj and resus! Thank you guys once again for all your warm and kind hospitality and amazing teas and dinners :) see you guys v soon ;)
Suraj and his family made our trip memorable! It was so nice to have chance staying in a local family like Suraj's. The room is clean and cozy, and we had a lot interaction, which is what I look for in trips.
Me and my friend were warmly greeted when we arrived, by Suraj and his son Tintin. And then other family members as well. In the evening when we came back from Patan and Baktapur, Suraj led us to the temple nearby to see a ceremony that we had no idea will take place at that time. It was to us a very special experience, to be around by local people and participate in the whole ceremony. You can always get excellent recommendations from them. We were offered a wonderful dinner with them and had a great conversation with Suraj about culture, experiences in U.S. and so on. It was great to speak French and Spanish with him! Suraj and his wife Resu made tea and lemon soda for us and taught me how to prepare nepali drinks and foods. They never hesitated to do anything to make us feel at home. Thanks to them that we don't have to buy spices, ingredients and souvenirs in Thamel, where almost everything is made only for tourists! I learned much about Nepal and nepali culture and the local life. One thing that would never happened if I stayed in a hotel in Thamel.
They make a lovely family. Tintin is so adorable that I want to play with him all the time. He likes dancing and saying hi to us. We enjoyed every second with him around. Suraj and Resu always try to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Their dog Mickey has beautiful eyes and is close to us. It is so nice to avoid the noise and commercial atmosphere in Thamel and enjoy the peace and warmth of family in Kathmandu, when you are abroad. I can never forget this family and my amazing experience with them!
Thousand thanks to their host! I wish to come back and meet them again.
