A cozy and comfortable stay with Nepalese family fulfilling your basic need in Nepal.
Alvin's Room was named after the room was transformed from storage space to accommodate my close friend Alvin Tai from Seatle, USA who was in Nepal on a business trip for a week. We used artifacts and handicrafts to decorate the room traditionally while keeping it simple.
Conveniently located in the heart of Kathmandu valley and just a minute walk from all major public transportation. Nearby restaurants, banks, and grocery shops.
Short walk to airport, some of the Word Heritage Sites, short &easy bicycle ride to all major attractions (Historical Palaces, Temples, Stupas, Monastries and popular Tourist Hangouts).
We have had many friends from abroad spending their time in our house because of the warmth and location. You will get to blend with our family, taste Nepali food and experience the culture just the way it is for us everyday. We treat you like our own family.
We will assist you along your tour in negotiating costs for excursions and adventures to make it fun and memorable while making it most reasonable. We'll provide you a sim card for your telephone need (cost to be born by you).
At no additional cost, we'll serve you three cups of tea everyday, you can learn how to cook Nepali food and we'll give you Nepali Lessons for as long as you stay with us at a time convenient to both you and a member of our family.
For additional guest (there will be a cleaning fee of 10 dollars if your stay is for a week). If you stay for long time, you will be responsible for the cleaning of room and everything else you use.
Other Things to Note
If you wish to use the washing machine, there is a charge of 3 dollars per use. We'll give you one load laundry detergent. Please ask us us prior to using the machine because may not be familiar in using it.
Water and electricity is of scarce in Kathmandu so we request all the guests to use them wisely.
Our house rule is no different than your own. Just be respectful to the culture and tradition. We request those who stay longer to clean their room from time to time (Disposing Trash from Kitchen use and toilets properly in the bins, taking them out to the trash collector in the morning who comes two to three times a week) and also contribute in water and electricity as well as gas use if you use the gas oven to cook food.
Please also clean the toilets and kitchen properly after using them. We keep it clean for all.
Smoking is only allowed in the roof and open spaces.
Suraj en his family made us feel right at home. We had a great time en definitely recommend staying here!
Everything was perfect during my stay with suraj and resu and I honestly couldn't have asked for anything more. Both extremely kind and genuine people and they made me feel a part of their wonderful family as soon as I walked into their home. You would definitely be missing out on a great experience if you don't get the chance to stay at suraj and resus! Thank you guys once again for all your warm and kind hospitality and amazing teas and dinners :) see you guys v soon ;)
Suraj and his family made our trip memorable! It was so nice to have chance staying in a local family like Suraj's. The room is clean and cozy, and we had a lot interaction, which is what I look for in trips.
Me and my friend were warmly greeted when we arrived, by Suraj and his son Tintin. And then other family members as well. In the evening when we came back from Patan and Baktapur, Suraj led us to the temple nearby to see a ceremony that we had no idea will take place at that time. It was to us a very special experience, to be around by local people and participate in the whole ceremony. You can always get excellent recommendations from them. We were offered a wonderful dinner with them and had a great conversation with Suraj about culture, experiences in U.S. and so on. It was great to speak French and Spanish with him! Suraj and his wife Resu made tea and lemon soda for us and taught me how to prepare nepali drinks and foods. They never hesitated to do anything to make us feel at home. Thanks to them that we don't have to buy spices, ingredients and souvenirs in Thamel, where almost everything is made only for tourists! I learned much about Nepal and nepali culture and the local life. One thing that would never happened if I stayed in a hotel in Thamel.
They make a lovely family. Tintin is so adorable that I want to play with him all the time. He likes dancing and saying hi to us. We enjoyed every second with him around. Suraj and Resu always try to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Their dog Mickey has beautiful eyes and is close to us. It is so nice to avoid the noise and commercial atmosphere in Thamel and enjoy the peace and warmth of family in Kathmandu, when you are abroad. I can never forget this family and my amazing experience with them!
Thousand thanks to their host! I wish to come back and meet them again.
Suraj, Resu, and their son Tintin are the best! Their place in KTM is conveniently located near the airport and lots of restaurants and shops. It is also near public transportation if you'd like to go to other parts of the city or surrounding areas. They were very helpful and provided great suggestions for our short time in Nepal. They have an amazing and kind family. I definitely recommend staying here during your time in KTM.
I stayed at Suraj's place with my friend Dheeraj. A family that we can never forget in our life. Suraj is the coolest guy we've ever met. A brother(bhay) who helped us out in all our decisions on our trip to Nepal. Within Minutes we were able to change the plan if it weren't viable where Suraj has the best recommendations according to our taste. We are lucky and honoured to meet a guy like him. He gave us valuable advices.
Suraj's place was really, as everybody calls it, cozy and comfy. He had these big blankets that keeps you warm and cozy. A heater to take a warm bath after a tough day. The flooring was warm. For people like us, who come from a place like Kerala, extreme cold is a thing that we've never experienced. But at his house it was like HOME SWEET HOME. It was a relief to reach back home(suraj's place) after a hard day roaming around. The house was clean and well maintained. We got all the materials in the room like maps and books for references which gave an overview on the place we were about to visit. The location of the house is amazing. You can see the whole kathmandu town from the rooftop. Can get all sorts of vehicles and can go to any place u want to go from there.
Lots of Thanks to Suraj's father who helped us out in purchasing things from Pashupathinath temple and Thamel. Bargaining is kindf tough in Kathmandu. It was easy with him around us.
Tintin, the cute baby. Lots of kisses to u.
Then rezu(bhabhi). she was an amazing character. We enjoyed chit chatting about Nepali cuisine and shared Kerala cuisines with her.
The pet dog at the house became friendly really fast.
So if u're trying to find a place to stay in Kathmandu, giving easy access to almost all places then ur search is over.. i would recommend this place to everyone.
Suraj and Resu and their whole family gave us the perfect local stay. We could not have asked for more. We loved staying in Alvin's room. They are extremely welcoming and made us feel at home, especially after a long flight. We stayed with them for the first two nights in Kathmandu, before going on to Pokhara for a trek. We came late at night and the family stayed up to greet us. Suraj gives us our own space at the same time never made us feel like we are lost in a foreign city. We had a great time with his parents and son as well, and his father took the time in the morning to take us to run errands, which we appreciated so much. The room is lit well, lovely and cosy, and their blankets were amazing for a couple of folks who live in a tropical climate. You can ask them about anything and they are ready to help you and provide you anything you need, without imposing any information or recommendations on you. There is always someone at the house to greet you if Suraj is not at home. The kitchen, living room space and pretty much the whole common quarters are available for you to use.
You will definitely come as a stranger, stay as a guest and leave as a friend, in Suraj's place! Thank you for having us!

I highly recommend staying in Alvin's Room when visiting Kathmandu! Suraj and Resu are wonderful, making me feel at home and had plenty of recommendations and local knowledge of where to go and what to do in Kathmandu. The room is very comfortable, cosy and clean. I was even lucky enough to meet Alvin (after whom it was named) he was coincidently visiting for the first time since his first stay in the room, great guy! Thank you Suraj, Resu and baby Tintin for your wonderful hospitality! Hope to visit again sometime.
