The Space

Come stay at Juniper House, a 4-person cooperative household. We have a sunny, spacious, clean guest room, with a queen sized bed. There is plenty of common space including a big, bright, eat-in kitchen, perfect for breakfast, or packing a lunch to take on your Bay Area adventure.

The house is from 1905. There are lots of windows. There is a big formal dining room with a piano and a working fireplace, and a spacious living room with a big picture window. There is great people watching from either the couch or the porch. Outside is a smallish garden with some herbs, fruit trees, and a few greens.

We are happy to pick up any grocery items that you might need, just let us know. If you wish to share food extensively, or even want a romantic catered dinner, or breakfast in bed, we can probably arrange something.

Sometimes some of us are around, but we all have pretty busy lifestyles. We are friendly and love to meet new people, but also respectful of privacy, and don't require a lot of interaction.

We are all lefty/ liberal/ anarchist types. Aside from myself (AJ, see profile), there is D: 60's, editor, kitchen witch, permaculture enthusiast, works from home, has lived in Juniper House for 25 + years, G: 30's, yoga teacher, music lover, bike lover, and likes to chill at home, R: 30's great cook, resourceful food gatherer, and a fun person to be around.

There is one main bathroom with a decent shower and not-fancy tub, which you would be sharing with 3 of us. If you need the shower at a certain time just let us know and we can make sure it is free. There is also a backup bathroom, through the downstairs bedroom which is usually available.

Our neighborhood has been called both Greater Mosswood and KONO ("Koreatown Northgate"). We are about 5 blocks from MacArthur BART (15-20 minute trip into SF) and 1 block from Telegraph bus lines. We are near Kaiser and Summit/ Pill Hill. There is a nearby bike shop where you can rent bikes by the day (I believe $25 includes lock and helmet). You can park your bike inside the house.

We are also near a great bagel shop, delicious coffee place, and not far from the Uptown and Temescal neighborhoods, with lots of great restaurants about a 20 minute walk away. Mosswood Park is at the end of our block, with tennis courts, playing fields, a small amphitheater, basketball courts, and a big lawn for relaxing on.

There is some noise from the freeway, and of course sharing a house with 4 people, nothing too bad, but if you are very sensitive to noise it is something you may want to consider. There is permit street parking, passes are $1/ day, or $5/week. NO CLEANING FEE, just don't make a mess :)

Our house is queer/ trans friendly, and 420 friendly ( a couple of us use medical cannabis). No pets live here, but occasionally a friend's dog will visit.

If this sounds like a good match for you, please get in touch and please have a profile with something about yourself, interests, special needs, etc.

Hope to see you soon!

  • I had a wonderful stay at Juniper house! Everyone was super friendly and I felt a twinge of guilt at not having more time to socialize with everyone, but it was a very busy trip for me. I LOVE THE BED! In spite of traffic noise, which I only heard on the first night, I slept like a rock every time my head hit the pillow.
The bathroom was clean, the kitchen was clean and the house rules were mostly common sense stuff that any considerate traveler would figure out. My only suggestion is the house should think about getting another freezer, as there was not much space to cram food in, but I ate out most of the time anyway.

I really appreciated the fact that everyone was friendly, helpful and just the kind of folks I like having around. I felt totally at home! Thanks, Juniper comrades!

  • Wonderful people and wonderful room. Thanks so much for the room. Wish we could have stayed longer but this place is understandably booked up quick. Clean and easy, nice food nearby.

  • We had a good stay at juniper house ! The bedroom is spacious, the bed is good, and share the bathroom is really not a problem.
The only thing is you can ear the highway traffic not far, even when the windows are closed... But we had a good sleep anyway...
    D. is really nice and she gave us a lot of informations about San Francisco and what we could do.

  • AJ, Diana, Rob, and Genevieve wee amazing hosts with an amazing house. The location was great, a quick walk to the BART if you wanted to go down to San Fran while the neighbourhood of Oakland had lots of cute shops to check out. Bed was comfortable, place was clean, area was not too loud, and the hosts were not loud. The kitchen in the home was amazing, we were able to make breakfasts and pack lunches during our stay. They also had recycling and compost which was nice. The hosts were extremely helpful giving us suggestions of where to go and helping us navigate the city. (They had lots of maps). Highly recommended!

  • I am very happy to review my stay at the Juniper House. It was a warm, welcoming home central to all of the places we traveled to in Oakland and San Francisco.

The kitchen is just lovely, and stocked with everything one could need during their stay. We were offered food multiple times during our journey and they even had a great compost and recycling system going on there as well.

The room is quite large and roomy, and the bed was super comfortable and clean. The closet was stocked with towels and face cloths and the bathroom is right across the hall. There was maps and other good information in the side table, and parking was easy on the street.

Everyone at the house was super nice, and made you feel right at home. I only wish I wasn't in such a rush so that I could have spent more time with the housemates. I was on a business and personal trip and only had very little time to squeeze in all of the visits and other things I wanted to do!

Thank you for a clean, open and comfortable house - I highly recommend this cooperative home to anyone looking for a great place to stay in Oakland! :)

  • AJ and his housemates were great hosts: friendly, accommodating but also very comfortable with leaving me to come and go. The room is very comfortable and roomy. The house also commits to very good conservation and health practices. It's a good choice for people who might be sensitive to artificial scents or household chemicals.

  • Great house with friendly people and positive vibes! I was impressed with how clean and tidy the house was and the room was so cozy and just as pictured here. I was especially thankful for the space heater provided in the room as well as the offer to make coffee each morning. Amazing! Loved this charming house and would recommend it to friends and locals looking for lodging. Excellent deal for your money and stoked to have found such a gem! Mahalo!

  • AJ is a welcoming as much as a quite professional host, always available when you need something (including when you have a bicycle with flat tire and need repairing tools...). Room is big and bed comfortable, two windows, I was independant and felt at home amidst the four co-renters. The kitchen is perfect for whom likes to cook. A ride away from Berkeley university... They risk to have to bear me one more time...

When I travel I spend a lot of time out, although I do like to cook and eat at home as much as possible.
