Juniper House Co-op Sunny Bedroom

House - Private room · 36th Street, Oakland, CA 94609, United States

The Space

Come stay at Juniper House, a 4-person cooperative household. We have a sunny, spacious, clean guest room, with a queen sized bed. There is plenty of common space including a big, bright, eat-in kitchen, perfect for breakfast, or packing a lunch to take on your Bay Area adventure.

The house is from 1905. There are lots of windows. There is a big formal dining room with a piano and a working fireplace, and a spacious living room with a big picture window. There is great people watching from either the couch or the porch. Outside is a smallish garden with some herbs, fruit trees, and a few greens.

We are happy to pick up any grocery items that you might need, just let us know. If you wish to share food extensively, or even want a romantic catered dinner, or breakfast in bed, we can probably arrange something.

Sometimes some of us are around, but we all have pretty busy lifestyles. We are friendly and love to meet new people, but also respectful of privacy, and don't require a lot of interaction.

We are all lefty/ liberal/ anarchist types. Aside from myself (AJ, see profile), there is D: 60's, editor, kitchen witch, permaculture enthusiast, works from home, has lived in Juniper House for 25 + years, G: 30's, yoga teacher, music lover, bike lover, and likes to chill at home, R: 30's great cook, resourceful food gatherer, and a fun person to be around.

There is one main bathroom with a decent shower and not-fancy tub, which you would be sharing with 3 of us. If you need the shower at a certain time just let us know and we can make sure it is free. There is also a backup bathroom, through the downstairs bedroom which is usually available.

Our neighborhood has been called both Greater Mosswood and KONO ("Koreatown Northgate"). We are about 5 blocks from MacArthur BART (15-20 minute trip into SF) and 1 block from Telegraph bus lines. We are near Kaiser and Summit/ Pill Hill. There is a nearby bike shop where you can rent bikes by the day (I believe $25 includes lock and helmet). You can park your bike inside the house.

We are also near a great bagel shop, delicious coffee place, and not far from the Uptown and Temescal neighborhoods, with lots of great restaurants about a 20 minute walk away. Mosswood Park is at the end of our block, with tennis courts, playing fields, a small amphitheater, basketball courts, and a big lawn for relaxing on.

There is some noise from the freeway, and of course sharing a house with 4 people, nothing too bad, but if you are very sensitive to noise it is something you may want to consider. There is permit street parking, passes are $1/ day, or $5/week. NO CLEANING FEE, just don't make a mess :)

Our house is queer/ trans friendly, and 420 friendly ( a couple of us use medical cannabis). No pets live here, but occasionally a friend's dog will visit.

If this sounds like a good match for you, please get in touch and please have a profile with something about yourself, interests, special needs, etc.

Hope to see you soon!

  • I am very happy to review my stay at the Juniper House. It was a warm, welcoming home central to all of the places we traveled to in Oakland and San Francisco.

The kitchen is just lovely, and stocked with everything one could need during their stay. We were offered food multiple times during our journey and they even had a great compost and recycling system going on there as well.

The room is quite large and roomy, and the bed was super comfortable and clean. The closet was stocked with towels and face cloths and the bathroom is right across the hall. There was maps and other good information in the side table, and parking was easy on the street.

Everyone at the house was super nice, and made you feel right at home. I only wish I wasn't in such a rush so that I could have spent more time with the housemates. I was on a business and personal trip and only had very little time to squeeze in all of the visits and other things I wanted to do!

Thank you for a clean, open and comfortable house - I highly recommend this cooperative home to anyone looking for a great place to stay in Oakland! :)

  • AJ and his housemates were great hosts: friendly, accommodating but also very comfortable with leaving me to come and go. The room is very comfortable and roomy. The house also commits to very good conservation and health practices. It's a good choice for people who might be sensitive to artificial scents or household chemicals.

  • Great house with friendly people and positive vibes! I was impressed with how clean and tidy the house was and the room was so cozy and just as pictured here. I was especially thankful for the space heater provided in the room as well as the offer to make coffee each morning. Amazing! Loved this charming house and would recommend it to friends and locals looking for lodging. Excellent deal for your money and stoked to have found such a gem! Mahalo!

  • AJ is a welcoming as much as a quite professional host, always available when you need something (including when you have a bicycle with flat tire and need repairing tools...). Room is big and bed comfortable, two windows, I was independant and felt at home amidst the four co-renters. The kitchen is perfect for whom likes to cook. A ride away from Berkeley university... They risk to have to bear me one more time...

  • AJ, Diana, Rob, and Genevieve are very friendly and helpful people, and I really enjoyed my stay in their house. The room is sunny and comfortable, and the house is well located if you intend on visiting SF city center frequently. I definitely recommend this room! Thanks for a pleasant stay!

  • AJ was actually out of town for most of my stay, though he did an excellent job of communicating with me prior to and during my trip, connecting me to Diana, another resident who checked me in and was an excellent hostess (as mentioned in other reviews). The house was charming and in a great location with easy street parking. The room was large and well furnished as pictured. Overall I wasn't in the house much except to sleep, but every interaction I had with the residents was positive, and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay!

  • During my three night stays, I met only two of four residents (Diane and Rob) and my communication with them was limited, but I could tell they are laid back and very helpful. It's a residential area yet convenient enough with access of public transportation, especially for Oakland area. The house is earthy and welcoming with cares and characters, this is a place for those who are cool, mature, and respectful. I witnessed a sense of community here. Also it's a noteworthy that this is my very first airbnb experience and I'd love to do it again because of the positive experience.

  • Very clean and tidy house. Friendly, welcoming and easygoing house mates. The room was very nice and with a very COMFORTABLE bed. Great shower and clean bathroom. We felt at home and the housemates were very knowledgable with regards to the surrounding area. They gave suggestions of things to visit and do. The house is close to all transits and walkable to the downtown area with bars and restaurants. I would stay here again if I came back to Oakland. Thank you for having us :-)

  • Super fantastic. AJ and the crew were gracious hosts, and are attentive to the needs of their guests. It was fun to spend time at the house, and the spacious bedroom worked well for us. A great way to experience Oakland!

  • This is a great place to stay for Bay Area travelers on a budget. The folks are friendly, fun, and flexible, you can have as much or as little interaction as you'd like. I felt like their room mate for the week. The room is spacious and comfortable. I was concerned about parking but found a space on the same block every time. I highly recommend this place to anyone interested.

About
California native, queer, loves to travel, cook, eat, organic food, cycling, dancing, art museums and galleries, gardening, big cities, parties, meeting new people. I drink coffee everyday, 420 friendly, my favorite book is The Fifth Sacred Thing by Starhawk, I like trashy reality TV on occasion, when I was younger I lived in squats in London. I have also lived in Philadelphia for a short time, and on 2 organic farms in rural northern California. My dad is from NYC and my mom is from SF. When I travel I spend a lot of time out, although I do like to cook and eat at home as much as possible. I eat all sorts of healthy things, and sometimes like to indulge in some champagne or the like. I often stay out late and sleep in.
