  • The L.O.V.E. Retreat is a good home base for a trip to Vieques, as it is only a 10 min walk down to the Malecon (boardwalk) in Esperanza and from there, very close to Sun Bay. It is currently undergoing construction, which should look beautiful in the future. Dr. Mona was very friendly and we enjoyed interacting with her dogs and cat. Also, she was accommodating of our sudden travel plan changes (due to lost luggage), which was greatly appreciated.

  • Dr. Mona was very welcoming and it was a great place to explore Esparanza from. Took about 10 minutes to walk down to the beach area, and her dogs might even join you for the walk every now and then! There was some new construction going on outside of the apartment, but didn't cause us any problems. Also very glad that we took Dr. Mona's recommendations for the biobay and island tour, was a fantastic time.

  • The day spent in DR. Mona's house was wonderful. The house has a perfect location, not far from the beach. Dr Mona was taking care of (website hidden), love the doggies in the house.

  • Mona was an excellent host. Right after our arrival she brought us Fred homemade juices and a papaya from her garden. We were living in the apartment upstairs which was nice and very private. We fell in love with her gang of dogs that accompanied us on our way to the beach.

  • Dr. Mona was very nice and ready to help us with any questions that we had. The place is a short walk away from a strip of restaurants and sun bay.

  • We had a great stay at Dr. Mona's. The space is minimal, and there's a lot of construction happening at the house, so it currently isn't a great place to hang out and spend a lot of time just relaxing. However, if you just want a simple place to sleep and plan to spend your days exploring the island, it's perfect! Dr. Mona was very generous with her time and insight about the island and was also flexible in letting us extend our trip at the last minute.

  • Mona is a wonderful host. She is friendly and talkative and shares her home with you as if you are family. There are lots of dogs who are very friendly but can make a lot of noise at night. Mona is constantly working on improving the space so look for some upgrades to my following comments.

Pros: The room is yours and yours alone. You have a private bathroom and a nice open space for sleeping, eating and hanging out. There are fruit trees on the property that make you feel immersed in the tropics.

Cons: At night the dogs can make a lot of noise. There is noise all through the neighborhood and that did not bother me. But, when a dogs are standing outside your door braking it's a little much. There is very little circulation in the room. Because of the bugs you have to keep the door closed as there is no good way to screen against the insects.

  • Dr. Mona's LOVE retreat was exactly what you want in an air bnb stay--clean, easily accessibly, and simple, and as a host, Dr. Mona will be as hands-off or on as you like. It was great that I knew she was there if I had any questions or needed anything, but she totally respected my privacy when I didn't, which I really appreciated as a solo traveler. There is some noise in the neighborhood from barking dogs at night, but at least you know Dr. Mona's dogs are looking out for you. Staying here is definitely a better deal than staying at most of the Guest Houses in Esperanza, as they can be a lot more pricey. There is a cheap hostel, but it is very bare bones there, with shared bathrooms, and I don't know if they even give you towels, so it is worth it to stay in the neighborhood in this private room, and is an easy 5-10 minute walk down to the Malecon.

    Response from Dr. Mona:

Awe Jenna. I lived vicariously through you. How I wish I could have traveled as a young person and am happy that my space was affordable so you could really enjoy your vacation. I am enthralled by your independence-reminds me of how I want to be more like that. Much love and grand wishes for your continued sojourns, Dr. Mona

  • Staying at Dr. Mona's was like staying with family. She was warm, organized, and just a pleasure to talk to. I would definitely recommend staying there.

  • My girlfriend and I had a wonderful time at Dr. Mona's house! We stayed in the rooftop studio apartment and it was perfect! Close walk to the beach and main strip in Esperanza, grocery store super close, and Mona answered all of our questions (and fed us some delicious home grown avocado). Overall, great experience!

About
I love the playa, sunrise, sunset, mid day swim, late afternoon float-I should be there now, in fact, I could stay there all day! I am a paradox- a Water lover who es [paradoxically] mierdo de aqua! Still learning Viequense Spanish to communicate and study the culture-an anthropologist at heart. My goal: Yo quiero abierto El Colegio de la Gente en Vieques. The L.O.V.E. Movement is focused on rescuing human souls globally. Locally we will start with a hybrid Spanish-English pilot course scheduled through the El Centro de Aprendizaje en Nueva Parcellas Esperanza that starts in Spring 2014-maybe you can be a visiting language partner during your stay at the Retreat. A Hybrid person (ask), I am a widow, who saw my Ti enjoy our home in Vieques in his last twenty-two months, and remain in his beautiful Puerto Rico to fulfill new dreams. My new mantra is "Be Happy Now", dreams of sailing on Catamarans, traveling to South America, South Africa and Australia. I am learning art forms to go with the found art objects I make, love making big leaf plants grow. I want to learn how to cook and to preserve my tropical fruits to bolster my joy. I enjoy a good 'chick'/action flick on Sunday morning. Yes, I am green, in terms of protecting my beautiful fruit trees and devouring them especially avocados. I'm a vegan-vegetarian when necessary- who doesn't cook much so my dogs will be looking for any meat leftovers you have. I have a protective animal family- 4 out of 5 dogs are related. There are 2 outdoor/indoor adult cats and one kitten who is winning my heart and the jealousy of some of the others pets. I like to offer guests as much privacy as possible so let me know flat out if I'm getting too chatty. My hope is that we 'exchange gifts' in this encounter that speak of and share our individual sources of 'happiness'. Disfruta :-)
