The Space

Privacy, Security, Comfort. Perfect For couples or four close friends. Located in a quiet residential neighborhood the retreat is an 8 minute walk downhill to the Malecon, its bars, restaurants, near Biobay tour meeting points, the Caribbean Sea beaches. Private entrance on 2nd level, attached bathroom, hot shower* and more.

Privacy, Security, Comfort. Perfect For couples, close to the Malecon, bars, restaurants and beach. Located on the 2nd floor. small appliances, refrigerator, TV-cable ready (ask), DVD's, WiFi, AC, ceiling fan. (*standard PR style electric heater)

Private Bathroom, hot shower, wireless Internet, AC, ceiling fan, refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker, outdoor gas stovetop available (request in advance), atrium and south deck access to lounge, smoke cigarettes, watch sunrise/sunsets from north deck.
Quiet, green-abundant fruit trees (please no harsh chemical shampoos, conditioners, etc.) I would greatly appreciate help with harvesting, for which will reap the benefits :-)

Hands on/ hands off, it's up to you. I want to know when to expect you, give you an orientation to the island and my home, know how to reach you in transit and on island (in case something comes up, i.e. if you miss the ferry or home projects affect power, etc. Let me know, as soon as you can, when you are planning to leave and arrange key return.

I love that it's people quiet in the daytime and at night and that there are several small store in walking distance, close to the beach and sunrises.

A taxi service is available for smooth transition of Publicos are easy enough to get, several drivers live on my street. You can get an impromptu ride on the Malecon by waving to the driver to stop and they will tell you how much it cost. Practice short phrases, out of courtesy & expediancy like 'cuanto cuesta?; va a el pueblo o playa (ñame), lancha (Ferry Dock)?'

Vieques has beautiful beaches and has been ranked in several travel magazines-come For more than The Biobay experience. Patronales in July, Three Kings day parade and 'The Race For The cure' are good local Events to attend.

  • We stayed with Dr. Mona for about a week so we really got to know the L.O.V.E. retreat well. First, the living space: nice big bed, storage for clothes, AC unit, private bathroom with shower, futon for lounging, Direct TV (though we didn't use it because why would you on vacation?), dining table, microwave and toaster oven, refrigerator, who could ask for anything more? THIS IS PERFECT for those who want to save money on long term stays because of the ability to cook your own small and simple meals (Malecon meals DO add up). There was nothing about this room we were disappointed with, and since it is on the second floor you can get a good view of sunsets as well as just hang out on the balcony area having drinks which we did many times. Secondly, Dr. Mona and her home: She is this wonderfully helpful and eccentric woman who accommodated us by providing us information about the area, always checking to see if we needed fresh towels or linens, and she gave us a couple of generous breakfasts (bagels, pineapple boats, garden starfruit). Her pack of dogs are sweet as can be, we even took three of them on a walk on the Malecon one day. Her upstairs cats kept us company on the balcony many nights, also sweethearts. We developed a rapport and helped her out a few times taking her shopping and she helped us out by allowing us to use her kitchen, so there was a nice mutual benefit between us during our stay. She was never intrusive or overbearing as some AirBnB hosts can be. Thirdly, location: While this is not directly on the Malecon, it isn't far at all, and the price is worth it. It is close to 3 stores where you can stock up on all your essentials, and it is about a 10-15 min walk to the awesome Sun Bay beach. If you have a car rental, this distance is insignificant and if you're walking everywhere (which we did 6 of 7 days) it is totally doable. We even made a day trip walking from this location to Navio, Medio Luna beaches, which is more of a hike but still feasible.

Overall experience is that we were very satisfied with our stay here, the accommodations, the host, the room, and the location. Dr. Mona is a very considerate woman, and she plans on upgrading the upstairs rooms to contain an outdoor kitchen in the future (for those super-savers out there, this is an excellent option). I would definitely come back here!

  • Dr Mona was extremely helpful and helped us find our way around Esperanza and get a tour of the Bio Bay! The room was within walking distance of everything we needed to get to.

  • Mona was very helpful and welcoming. The room was large and clean, we slept really well and it felt like our own cocoon. Mona was very communicative and answered my questions right away. I definitely recommend staying with her!

  • Dr.Mona was very friendly and welcoming! It was our first visit to Vieques. She told us the best spots for sunset and sunrise and where to buy foods lots of information in Vieques that really helped us a lot. She has a friend who offers snorkeling tour,so if you are interested in taking a snorkeling tour. She would give you the information. We loved her pets! They were all so lovely and friendly! When you get home, every time they welcome you. We miss them so much. The location is perfect. It takes within 10minutes to the beach, bars and restaurants. We had a great experience.

  • The L.O.V.E. Retreat is a good home base for a trip to Vieques, as it is only a 10 min walk down to the Malecon (boardwalk) in Esperanza and from there, very close to Sun Bay. It is currently undergoing construction, which should look beautiful in the future. Dr. Mona was very friendly and we enjoyed interacting with her dogs and cat. Also, she was accommodating of our sudden travel plan changes (due to lost luggage), which was greatly appreciated.

  • Dr. Mona was very welcoming and it was a great place to explore Esparanza from. Took about 10 minutes to walk down to the beach area, and her dogs might even join you for the walk every now and then! There was some new construction going on outside of the apartment, but didn't cause us any problems. Also very glad that we took Dr. Mona's recommendations for the biobay and island tour, was a fantastic time.

  • The day spent in DR. Mona's house was wonderful. The house has a perfect location, not far from the beach. Dr Mona was taking care of (website hidden), love the doggies in the house.

    March 2014
  • Mona was an excellent host. Right after our arrival she brought us Fred homemade juices and a papaya from her garden. We were living in the apartment upstairs which was nice and very private. We fell in love with her gang of dogs that accompanied us on our way to the beach.

    March 2014
  • Dr. Mona was very nice and ready to help us with any questions that we had. The place is a short walk away from a strip of restaurants and sun bay.

    March 2014
  • We had a great stay at Dr. Mona's. The space is minimal, and there's a lot of construction happening at the house, so it currently isn't a great place to hang out and spend a lot of time just relaxing. However, if you just want a simple place to sleep and plan to spend your days exploring the island, it's perfect! Dr. Mona was very generous with her time and insight about the island and was also flexible in letting us extend our trip at the last minute.

About
I love the playa, sunrise, sunset, mid day swim, late afternoon float-I should be there now, in fact, I could stay there all day! I am a paradox- a Water lover who es [paradoxically] mierdo de aqua! Still learning Viequense Spanish to communicate and study the culture-an anthropologist at heart. My goal: Yo quiero abierto El Colegio de la Gente en Vieques. The L.O.V.E. Movement is focused on rescuing human souls globally. Locally we will start with a hybrid Spanish-English pilot course scheduled through the El Centro de Aprendizaje en Nueva Parcellas Esperanza that starts in Spring 2014-maybe you can be a visiting language partner during your stay at the Retreat. A Hybrid person (ask), I am a widow, who saw my Ti enjoy our home in Vieques in his last twenty-two months, and remain in his beautiful Puerto Rico to fulfill new dreams. My new mantra is "Be Happy Now", dreams of sailing on Catamarans, traveling to South America, South Africa and Australia. I am learning art forms to go with the found art objects I make, love making big leaf plants grow. I want to learn how to cook and to preserve my tropical fruits to bolster my joy. I enjoy a good 'chick'/action flick on Sunday morning. Yes, I am green, in terms of protecting my beautiful fruit trees and devouring them especially avocados. I'm a vegan-vegetarian when necessary- who doesn't cook much so my dogs will be looking for any meat leftovers you have. I have a protective animal family- 4 out of 5 dogs are related. There are 2 outdoor/indoor adult cats and one kitten who is winning my heart and the jealousy of some of the others pets. I like to offer guests as much privacy as possible so let me know flat out if I'm getting too chatty. My hope is that we 'exchange gifts' in this encounter that speak of and share our individual sources of 'happiness'. Disfruta :-)
