116 foot, Arctic research and Expedition vessel is offering limited accommodations aboard while in port, at our home berth in Red hook, New York.
Ship has comfortable and generous accommodations, mahogany paneled salon with ship's wood stove, large mess and galley, wood burning sauna, many voluminous deck spaces, etc.
We can accommodate 12-14 guests in 5 private staterooms with queen size beds, bathroom en-suite.
Located centrally in the great neighborhood of Red Hook, Brooklyn, we offer great view of Manhattan, container port, Buttermilk channel, salt air and a whiff of adventure.
( Please note that renting the ship as photo/film location, or as an event venue should be a separate inquiry).
Amazing rental with lots to see. Make sure to visit the Red Hook neighborhood while you're here
Cape Race is one of the most unique and memorable places we've ever stayed in, and that's saying something. The pictures get it across, but it's even more impressive in person... the beautiful hardwoods, the overall fit and finish, and seeing that everything is *real*, like this vessel and everything on it are designed for real rough sea conditions. This also means you'll make some minor compromises like shower water pressure and bathroom size which we didn't care about and I only mention in case you, dear reader, do.
The Red Hook area exceeded our expectations as well. Other then being prepared for a lack of local public transport (nearest subway is a 20-25 minute walk away), we didn't really know what to expect. Red Hook turns out to be such a cool area with some outstanding restaurants (do NOT miss Kao Soy for dinner or Fort Defiance for brunch!), cute-as-button shops, and an amazing collective of local distilleries which all do tastings (Stillhouse is a good place to start and Widow Jane was fun). We wish we'd had an entire day to explore and tour.
If you can get your hands on bikes & NYC appropriate locks/chains, they'd really come in handy for local exploration and would make to/from the subway an easy 10 min ride.
Milo is very hands off -- most of the time it felt like we had the entire ship to ourselves. I wish we'd had more time to chat with him about his travels and the ship's adventures.
Make sure you know exactly where to have the taxi/car service drop you off (street and cross-street) and clear walking directions as the ship can be hard to find the first time, but it's a snap after that.
We hope to have the pleasure of staying at Cape Race again someday!
Lovely accommodations. I'd be happy to stay there again and I'm now interested in the arctic cruises aboard the Cape Race.
It felt a bit like being on the set of a Wes Anderson movie - there's a combination of beautiful woodwork and details, with the density of stuff that you get when a space is actually used. Plus the combination of the rough exterior of an ocean going vessel with very warm pleasant interiors.
The room was quiet and comfortable. The bed is good too. Since it's a boat, I wasn't sure what to expect the shower situation to be, but it turned out to be very nice.
It's worth mentioning that the room didn't have windows. I didn't mind this, since I had a lot of sleep to catch up on, but it does make it hard to get woken up by the sun (unlikely in fact).
I stayed on the boat with my partner for an evening, and after getting used to the uniqueness of the experience we enjoyed ourselves. There were a few unexpected issues with arriving to and from the boat, but Milo was able to assist in most situations. I would suggest scheduling your arrival around a time that Milo is available to meet you and show you around.
Everything was (email hidden)o gave us good advice for places to visit in Red Hook...including the Bait & Tackle Bar with Barry and Sonny's with the great music...Red Hook is a great place to visit...
My girlfriend and I spend a wonderful ten days on the Cap Race. It was amazing to live et sleep on the ship, in the port of Brooklyn with this incredible view of Manhattan and this nice neighbourhood of Red Hook. Our car and bikes were nearby along the boat. The room was quiet and confortable.
It was interesting to see the crew preparing the boat for a big trip in Arctic.
One of the best reservation on Airbnb until now.
My hubby & I thoroughly enjoyed our experience on Milo's boat. He has done such an amazing job renovating the space. It's got tons of character - a once in a lifetime experience. We were totally content to hang out on the deck and soak up the sun and the quiet. You'd never know you where in the city. Just at great place - we will certainly stay there any time Milo's in port.
