About This Listing
This home is located outside of the city center in a very nice residential area not far from the largest shopping center "The Mall Del Rio". The home is of Ecuadorian architecture which appears quite Mediterranean. The rooms are large with expansive closet space and all have private baths, large windows with views and a balcony. The kitchen is very large and is available to all patrons who wish to use this facility. The gardens are small but large enough to socialize with other patrons or just to relax and enjoy the comfort and beauty of the area.
This neighborhood is quiet and away from the noise pollution of the hectic city. Not far from the house is the Yanuncay River, one of the four major rivers that run through Cuenca. Along the park are walkways and areas to just sit and appreciate the beautiful nature of Ecuador.
There are restaurants, banks, pastry shops and good shopping in this area. If you want to go to the city center it is a 10 minute taxi ride with a cost of just $2.50 USD. The bus system has 4 lines that run just two blocks from the house. A short distance to walk and save your money at a cost of only .25 cents per ride.

Even though I arrived at almost midnight Sofia and Henry waited for me with the smile. Sweet Henry took my heavy begs and carried them upstairs as though they were empty - I sure was happy to get help with those begs - THANK YOU HENRY DARLING!!! Sofia's way of doing things is that when people arrive she gives them one role of TP, towel and the keys and so she did when I arrived. Towel was of good quality and my bed was comfortable as well as my pillow. Soap is not provided, but that wasn't a problem for me as I learned during my travel in South America to always carry it. As I found out from the "long-stayer" the room that I was in is the "most often rented room." The bathroom/shower was not up to my standard of clean, BUT wearing flip-flops in a shower solved the problem. After second night I woke up with numerous bites all over my body. Again Henry was my HERO - he took all of my bedding and washed/steamed it as well as sprayed the bed in order to kill what ever was biting me. Although we didn't know for sure where the "biting creatures" came from it could have been that they hitched a ride with me from the jungle... Unfortunately, I got sick while there and Sofia even extremely busy made sure to check on me and offer her help. As I was stuck in bed I really wanted to use the internet, however there was no connection which was VERY FRUSTRATING!!! Also my TP was gone, however Sofia does not provide second roll (luckily I carry that too). Sofia and Henry have two beautiful twin boys who they didn't mind sharing - thank you for that guys. It has been long time since I had little ones around and I enjoyed hearing their little feet running around. I even enjoyed their screaming and yelling, but this might not be everybody's "cup of tea." House is HUGE and there are two men who are renting their space for longer time (one has an apartment on the third floor and the other is renting the room on the second floor - both speak English). There are numerous rooms for rent in the house, but when I checked in only the long timers were there. Kitchen has seen much better days and it did NOT make me feel as thought I wanted to cook a meal in it. Note to all coming guests: get a map of house location emailed to you BEFORE you start your trip. Unfortunately, houses don't have numbers on them and it wasn't easy for the taxi driver to find it. On the other note... you WILL BE charged for the time that you are NOT at the property but have booked that time. As there was no bus for me to make it to Cuenca from Puyo on a day when my reservation started I...
I really enjoyed staying at Sofia's place. Sofia and her husband are great hosts, very friendly and helpful. The communication with Sofia was excellent and I received quick responses whenever I had any questions.
The house is huge, clean and offers a nice view. The kitchen and living room is spacious with modern appliances. My room was comfortable and nicely furnished with a separate bathroom.
Special thanks to Henri for his tasty hamburgers. You should try them. I recommend this place to other travelers in Cuenca.
We were able to make a reservation at the last minute and there was plenty of room for our large family! Sophia and Henri were very friendly and Sophia was most helpful before, during and after our stay! The rooms were clean and comfortable and so much nicer than being squished into a hotel room! Thank you!!
We booked at Sofia and Henry’s house because we were impressed with most of the reviews of their site. We should have paid more attention to the negative reviews.
We were hugely disappointed from the moment of our arrival. We had emailed the day before giving our time of arrival. It was evident that Sofia, though she had replied to our email, was not prepared for us. There were no towels or toilet paper in the room. Soap, we were informed, was up to us to provide! We were given one threadbare towel each to last a week! The shower enclosure was grimy with soap residue, and the floors looked as if they hadn’t been properly cleaned in a very long time.
We were expecting a homestay with a family. But our “host family” was gone early each morning and arrived back home late each evening. The house was dark when we arrived back for the evening. We really had very little interaction with them.
For a single occupant, the cost of a room stay would have been reasonable under the circumstances. However as a couple we paid twice the single rate. At a total of nearly $40.00 per day we could have stayed at a local hostal (inexpensive hotel) at the same or lower rate where we would have breakfast included and a change of towels and sheets every few days.
We do recommend that Sofia state on their posting a little more clearly what is, and what is not, included in their homestay site. And a periodic professional cleaning of the rooms is a reasonable expectation.
We had to return home early because of medical considerations, and thus forfeited our deposit. We have not let these circumstances influence our feedback.
I sincerely apologize for your bad experience! I did my best to accommodate you and your wife to give you a comfortable stay in my home.I have met many people from all over the world and I always learn a little something that I can use to make my house a better place for travelers. The worst thing for me is when my guests have unfulfilled expectations. That is why I put as much info in the desciption as possible with lots of pictures. The reviews of others help as well. Unfortunately some guest have some unfullfilled expectations. I thought my description was clear enough on the airbnb page as it does say .
I provide the towels and the toilet paper in the moment my guest arrive , that is the moment I take to show you some rules we use in Ecuador and show you the bedroom.
The idea to book right through Airbnb is precisely the exchange based in the lives of local experiences,That's why I offer full 24/7 kitchen access at no extra charge. In this way everybody can make what they like and can be happy and feel right at home. I want to remind the membersof AIRBNB that you do not arrive at a 5 star hotel, you have the comfort that the family has to offer, you arrive at local family and you share your life with them .
The house and rooms were spacious and comfortable. Sofia's family was pleasant.
My son and I stayed here for a week. The house is very beautiful just like the pictures and very secure. Sofia and her family are great hosts. The room was spacious, there was plenty of hot water, and the WiFi worked well. The house is in a quiet neighborhood far from the bus fumes of the downtown. Nearby are several small restaurants and food stores, a very good bakery, and a park. Taxi rides to the center of town cost about two dollars. Taxis are easy to find at Parque Iberia just two short blocks away. The Mall del Rio is a ten minute walk or very short taxi ride. I highly recommend this house for anyone who doesn't want to be in the downtown.
This home is massive and gorgeous. I almost never heard any other guests and actually thought the family must live in a separate part of the house because I almost never heard Sofie and the sweet little twin boys until I made it a point to find them my last ( of 6) nights there. Hendry was most gracious in helping me get my bearings in the neighborhood and walked with me a few blocks to point out the landmarks so I could find my way back after walking to Central Cuenca which I did every day. Easy walk to Mall de Rio and the Supermercado.
