Outstanding is the best words about this place, everything was just perfect, absolutly the best location around Vulcan Arenal!!! Loved everything in the house and the best place we have stayed in our 3 month honeymoon :-). Wish we had some more time and the only bad thing we can say about the house is that you can only be dissapointet the next place on your travel :-D.
Amazing views and a beautiful house! Take full advantage of Lelander and his horses 50 meters down the mountain, don't go anywhere else unless you want to pay more, wear helmets, and have a touristy experience! Back to the house, the full kitchen is very nice and the upstairs screen porch is awesome! To get these awesome views, you will work for it, the hill is steep and bumpy but worth every bounce. We called it a daily Tico Massage. The local dogs bark, the street lights are bright, and lightening bugs help the massive amount of stars light up the night skies. Heavenly!! Partake of Hannah & Thomas's banana bread, YUM!! Great place John!
Johns house was simply great. We were super happy with the everything except the weather.. We stayed in the house with three kids (7, 4 and 1) and they we're happy with the pool and we found a lot of activities in the area even though we had quite a bit of rain.
This is a nice property in a very remote area about 1/2 hr west of Fortuna. We arrived after 10 pm the first night in heavy rain and the following day only had about 3 hours of variably clarity so the awesome Arenal view was nonexistent. But the house is great. The enclosed second floor porch was awesome in the rain storm. The view must be incredible when the clouds clear. It was too rainy and cold to use the pool or gazebo but both are as shown. We only made the supplied delicious Costa Rican coffee but the kitchen looked well equipped even with frozen Margarita glasses in the freezer. Cable TV worked fine to catch a futbol match. Beds were very firm but comfortable, pillows were quite flat. Water heater is small so staggering showers is important. Secured gated parking was a nice feature as we had a large SUV but this is a tiny community so I don't imagine there's much theft.
En route you pass one of the Arenal Park entrances where we went and recommend. Several trails with level 3 to 4 difficulty. Great view of the volcano.
Just down the hill (4x4 recommended) is a veggie restaurant where we had a simple Tico breakfast, lunch at the other Soda at the base of the hill was equally acceptable.
Communication with the owner John was fast and informative. He also sent lots of excellent material on things to do, directions, house guidance, etc.
A fantastic home with spectacular views. Very clean & has everything you would want whilst away from home.
Definitely requires a 4x4 to get you to the house but a beautiful journey well worth taking!
Highly recommend this place if you're looking for tranquility & beauty.
If there were more stars to give, I wouldn't hesitate for a second. John's house is truly amazing, with what has to be one of the top views in the country. We enjoyed our breakfasts outside overlooking the lake and the volcano, it couldn't have been better. Not only that but the house is impeccably clean and very well designed. Hannah and Thomas, who are the day to day managers were great as well, they have a really nice shop that you should check out and get some bread or hot sauces! A great experience all around!
My mom, girlfriend, and myself just finished our stay El Castillo en Las Nubes and absolutely loved it! My mom could not stop saying how beautiful the views were and the house itself was modern and very comfortable. Although you must drive up a bumpy dirt road to reach the house, the views really are worth it-- probably the best we saw throughout our whole time in the area-- with the volcano directly ahead and Lake Arenal slightly to the left. Although it was a little too rainy & chilly for a dip in the pool, it looked very enticing and the outdoor gazebo was the perfect spot to eat breakfast each morning.
The caretakers of the property, Hannah & Thomas, were extremely kind and made sure we were happy during the 3 days we stayed in El Castillo. They also have a quaint art & herbs shop down the hill-- be sure to check it out and get some of their homemade bread!! They also offer a "food farm" tour which we didn't have a chance to check out, but they were kind enough to allow us to pick some herbs and such from land across the road from their store.
The house is situated about 15 minutes from Sky Adventures (great place to go zip lining) and 40 minutes from the town of La Fortuna. Close enough to everything in the area, yet secluded enough to create a quiet and peaceful environment for your getaway. We'd highly recommend staying at El Castillo En Las Nubes!
John's house was incredibly luxurious and offered stunning views, which not even the beautiful photos do justice. The house is maintained by a lovely couple down the hill who were incredibly helpful, even when our car broke down! The charm of this house is its remote location and therefore you are about a 20 minute drive from most restaurants in town. The house is also located closer to the Arenal Observatory than many of the hotel options in town, which is the kicking off point for many of the lovely hikes.
We loved staying at John's house, the views were spectacular and everything was as described. Our kids enjoyed using the pool everyday and we had great memories at the house. One note to other travelers - it's not easy to get the house, a 4x4 is a must.
This house was beautiful. The host and caretakers were very prompt and accomodating.
The house is slightly out of the way of La Fortuna, but that is what made it nice for us. It sits in the middle of farmland and there are cattle/horses grazing on the fields around the house. It has a great view of the lake and volcano. The house has everything you need to be comfortable at home. It was wonderfully equipped and very clean.
