The Space

Our 'Castle in The Clouds' is just seven km from Volcano Arenal, perched 700m above sea-level overlooking the volcano, rainforest, pastures and Lake Arenal. Wake to the sound of howler monkeys, toucans and parrots and enjoy your first cup of locally-grown coffee on our enormous 25 sq. m. covered deck. At night, watch the lava flows or count the stars overhead. Our home features a splash pool to cool off after a busy day of eco-adventuring. You can walk to many attractions in the village, including several quaint local restaurants. The home features casual dining indoor or out, hot water throughout, and stunning views from every room. It is completely equipped with a full-sized fridge with ice-maker, gas stove, microwave and blender and includes twice-weekly cleaning service (more often optional on request). An optional personal laundry service is also available. Active or passive, this is the perfect home base for your Arenal vacation!

In the last few months, we've been busy landscaping our property. We now feature a paved driveway, a separate covered Gazebo (perfect for al fresco dining) and the yard has been completely enclosed with a custom-made 5' stone and wrought-iron fence. You'll enjoy our garden paradise yard featuring a variety of local and tropical plants designed to maximize your Costa Rica experience.

Now-Book Local Tours and Attractions: John Divita (the famous Pizza John), our on-site host can now book many local tours and attractions for you on your arrival, saving you the hassle of running around. From zipline tours, hot springs spas and volcano hikes to a horseback ride to a real eco-farm, you can be as busy or as relaxed as you like, but you'll never run out of things to do in the area. Just ask John when you arrive and he'll be happy to make recommendations and reservations for you.

  • Great house with fabulous views and all the amenities you need. Tomas, the host, was very friendly and always available to answer any questions we might have. The road to the house was very rocky and you definitely need a 4x4 to get there. From the house we went on a hike up the mountain which yielded even better views.

  • Our stay at El Castillo En Las Nubes was incredible. The house itself is beautiful and the layout is ideal for two couples. The views are stunning when you have them (clouds come and go), as is the garden and the birds and frogs that visit it. The location is convenient to many of the local attractions, but it's far enough removed that you don't feel like a tourist. The host was kind and answered our questions promptly and accurately, so that even though this was our first time visiting Costa Rica, we were completely prepared. I wholeheartedly recommend El Castillo En Las Nubes, and would love to stay again.

  • El Castillo de Las Nuebes makes no compromise on comfort and luxury. We booked with John, who was very nice and helpful. The well-equipped house is beautiful inside and outside, with a stunning view of Lake Arenal and the Volcanoe. It’s worth walking further up the hill to get a superb view of Lake Arenal. The landscaping and plants around the house attract a variety of birds and some insects. The pool is great to cool down, but you won’t be swimming laps in it! A 4-wheel drive vehicle is a must to get to the property up the hill. There is a convenience store down the road from the house, but you have to drive about 30 minutes to La Fortuna for decent grocery shopping by North American standards. On location, Tomas welcomed us proficiently with detailed instructions for the house. He and his wife Hannah were very helpful and friendly. Make sure to stop by their art gallery, and try their homemade bread and cookies. Take a free dip in the Tabacòn hot springs, there is no need to pay as the river is easily accessible from the road. The guided night tour at the serpentarium was an informative and fun experience. If you want to try a vegetarian meal from Central America, Essence offers an interesting do-it-yourself culinary experience within walking distance of the house. The house offers cable TV and high-speed internet.

  • We had an absolutely incredible time in El Castillo en las Nubes! The views from every direction are amazing- farm land, lake, cloud rainforest & volcano. You can see it all from a top the mountains this house is perched so perfectly on. We unfortunately were only there for a few days (wish longer) but felt we got to do and see a lot in those three days. The house is beautiful and the kitchen is stocked with everything you will need and more. We met Hannah & Tomas, their hosts who own La Gavilana, they are so sweet and helped us with everything! Definitely request an order of their homemade bread & cookies and make sure to try the coffee beans from the plantation near by! We loved seeing all the horses and cows grazing on the grasses around the property- make sure to close the gate because they truly do get so close! We took advantage of their recommendations and did the full package at Sky Adventures (amazing zip lining), ATVing around farmlands, the jungle and volcano & make sure to go to the local hot springs day or night (mini Tabacon river). We also ventured to Nuevo Arenal to try the best (& only) brewery in Costa Rica- it was fun! You may also want to get a 4x4 but really only need it for the road up to the house because it is perched so high up and the roads are gravel and dirt. We would definitely recommend this place and hope one day to return again to this beautiful place!

    Thanks & Pura Vida!

  • Staying here was the highlight of our trip! We were so in love with this incredible house with its most amazing views. The host Hanna was very acknowledgeable and can make sandwhiches for your hikes. The stable a few house down can personally give you one of the most awesome trail rides passing rivers and seeing the meadows and of course always the view of the Volcano and the lake.

You certainly need a AWD but their directions are excellent. Do plan accordingly because you can't get here if you plane arrives too late. But it is so worth it and the home is very well decorated and with much modern amenities. I can't wait to return soon.

  • El Castillo was an absolutely wonderful way to end our time in Costa Rica. The setting was magnificent -- great views of the lake and volcano -- just as promised. And the house/home had everything we needed -- comfortable beds, lots of different places to sit and relax. Getting there can be a bit of a challenge, but we had already spent several days driving on CR roads, so these roads were just a bit more demanding. But the destination is certainly worth the trip. And the directions was very clear. Hannah and Tomas were most helpful with their advice. We are already planning another trip to CR and hope to stay here again. Thank you for sharing your "retreat" with us.

  • Outstanding is the best words about this place, everything was just perfect, absolutly the best location around Vulcan Arenal!!! Loved everything in the house and the best place we have stayed in our 3 month honeymoon :-). Wish we had some more time and the only bad thing we can say about the house is that you can only be dissapointet the next place on your travel :-D.

  • Amazing views and a beautiful house! Take full advantage of Lelander and his horses 50 meters down the mountain, don't go anywhere else unless you want to pay more, wear helmets, and have a touristy experience! Back to the house, the full kitchen is very nice and the upstairs screen porch is awesome! To get these awesome views, you will work for it, the hill is steep and bumpy but worth every bounce. We called it a daily Tico Massage. The local dogs bark, the street lights are bright, and lightening bugs help the massive amount of stars light up the night skies. Heavenly!! Partake of Hannah & Thomas's banana bread, YUM!! Great place John!
