The Space

Hikina means east. The Hikina Studio is a sweet private house with one big room. Kitchen is at one end and beds at the other. The bathroom is brand new with great light and views and a deluxe tub for bathing.

We offer two unique detached private garden cottages on our property, the Honey House is the other. They both have full equipped kitchens and lovely bathrooms. Both have unlimited filtered drinking water at the kitchen sink. We have WIFI . The house is equipped with a king size bed and a fold out futon sofa for a 2nd bed if needed. We are situated on a lush rain forest acre of land a couple of blocks from the ocean. Our acre has mature fruit trees including oranges, avocados, coconuts, bananas, and exotics like jaboticaba and acerola. We share fruit with all our guests, whatever is in season. Delightful flowering plants like night blooming jasmine and mock orange send their heavenly scents into the air. Our gardens and land is all clothing optional.

The Hikina Studio is on the east side of our land, and on the east side of the island. It was completely renovated last year and a new bathroom added. The bath features a marble tile and a big tub with orchard views. The house is up a half flight of stairs with a small deck. There is off street parking right outside. It has lots of windows and a ceiling fan for a cool breezy interior on hot days.

The Hikina Studio was renovated this year and we added a lovely bathroom. It has a big soaking tub with tub level window out into the orchard, yet made quite private by the foliage. There is a small deck and the house is a half flight of stairs up off the ground.

You can walk through the neighborhood and down a trail to nearby clothing-optional black sand beach, about a 5 minute walk. We also offer shared access to our outdoor solar shower, and our peaceful gardens. Kehena is a quiet neighborhood with lots of character and tropical lushness.

Within a few miles there are 2 great farmer's markets, one on Saturday morning and one Wednesday night, both are great for eating the local foods, take away food and all kinds of produce and gifts. Local dining also includes the Kalapana cafe, Kalani resort and plenty of restaurants in Pahoa town. We are 5 miles from the active Kilauea lava flows which are pumping right now with ocean entry that can be seen by taking a hike or by boat, helicopter or plane. There is a warm spring swimming pond 10 miles down the rustic Kalapana-Kapoho Rd. There are also plenty of snorkling opportunities nearby. Dolphins often frequent our beach. Humpback whales come through in the winter months.

Price is for double occupancy, and includes Hawaii GE and TAT taxes and Airbnb surcharge.

  • We had such a wonderful time at the Honey House. The place was quiet, clean and airy, and the open-air shower looking out on an orange tree was lovely. David and Val were great hosts - very friendly and available, and they even brought us treats from their garden - coconuts, papayas, and the best avocados we've ever eaten! :)

  • If you want a feel for the real Hawaii, not the packaged, filtered glimpse you get from a resort hotel, then stay at the Kehena Honey House. This spacious studio/one bedroom detached apartment is in a beautiful, lush yard in the wonderful Hawaiian neighborhood of Kehena. Expect your stay to be more like staying with a friend than a B&B. You get fresh linens when you ask for them and an equipped kitchen, but it's up to you to clean up after yourself. It's comfortable, plenty of hot water and wifi. The yard features fresh fruit and tame, curious ducks wandering around. The host is usually available and very hospitable, providing whatever we asked for. There's no air conditioning, but that's typical for Hawaii -- you really won't need it. You will have to get used to geckos climbing around on the walls and ceilings, but they aren't a nuisance at all. Once the sun goes down all manner of critters start making noise, which is constant until the sun comes up. But this night music is quite soothing and part of the Hawaii experience you don't want to miss. The only reason we gave the Honey House four stars instead of five is there was insufficient privacy. Not all windows had curtains and the curtains we did have were quite sheer. Occasionally our host or his guests would wander past, sometimes making us uncomfortable. But other than that we had a wonderful stay and would recommend it to anyone who can tolerate the geckos and the night music.
