The Zen Root is on a beautiful, rustic retreat sanctuary located on the island of Kaua’i. The land is situated just a few minutes walk from the protected Moloaa Bay, and is just 30 minutes from the airport. Moloaa, is known for its farming community and rural, “off the beaten track” feel.
Our mission is to connect people to the beauty of Kaua'i, and our spaces have been created to blend seamlessly with the nature that surrounds us. We strive to be as “eco-friendly” as we can, and to minimize our impact on our surroundings. The buildings are constructed of reclaimed teak and sandalwood from 150 year old buildings in Thailand. We also incorporate earthen floors, exterior walls, and reclaimed granite in the kitchen and bathroom. The structures are all working pieces of art, incorporating mosaics and statues.
This is a place to remember our connection to the wonder of life. It is a place to relax, unplug, and experience life the way it once was. Come enjoy the open air structures, the healing ocean, and the beauty that is Old Kaua’i. We look forward to sharing the beauty of Moloaa with you.

Interaction with Guests
We are happy to talk with our guest if they want to know about anything. We also are happy to let our guest have their own personal retreat time without interuptions.
We are just a few minutes from Moloaa Bay, which is great for swimming, snokling on the north and south sides, enjoying the nice beaches and hiking to the north point for sunrise to see turtles or whales.
We also have Moloaa fruit stand just up the road for coffee, smoothies, sandwiches; as well as a good health food store 10 minutes drive to the north. Also Common ground garden restaurant across from the health food store has organic and local breakfast and lunches that are wonderful.
We really recommend renting a car due to the fact that Kaua'i is very spread out.
That said, the bus stop is up the hill 2.4 miles at Moloaa fruit stand and hitch hiking is common and easy in Kauai.
We appreciate people who like the beauty of quietness and are interested in the natural ways of Kauai. No smoking indoors, moderate drinking okay.
Zen Root was a great place to stay, the most unique I have ever visited on vacation. The open air feeling and the views of the ocean were fantastic. I really enjoyed the outdoor-style experience of the space, the way it is decorated, and the way it is lit in the evenings. Anthony and Hami were very gracious hosts (as we their dogs Pali and Mogley). I had a great time!
Anthony and hami were wonderful hosts. The room was an amazing open air experience. It felt like we were in Bali. It had everything we could want and Anthony made sure we knew all the best tips for the area. They even let us play with Paul and mogli as we were homesick for our own dog!
Beautiful space, beautiful land, beautiful people! We enjoyed the open air and view from the Zen Root and visiting with our hosts - Anthony, Hami and the dogs and cats. Truly Hawai'i off the beaten path.
We had a great time at Zen Root; Pauli and Mogli, their puppies, were a real treat for two dog lovers like us! Each day they would come downstairs for a snack, hang out with us and keep us company! Anthony and Hami were warm, hospitable and answered all our questions quickly and courteously; this is a beautiful property with great guests, dogs, mother nature and a non-resort vibe perfect for outdoorsy types, world travelers and Kauai fans! We highly recommend leaving the large, east facing doors that face the ocean open 24/7 so you can get a good breeze, watch the sun rise and Paul and Mogli can get in whenever they want! :-)
Zen Root is a fantastic airbnb experience. I highly recommend it. It's not for everyone though, as it is very rustic. If you are looking for a resort experience, this is not the place for you, however If you want to experience the island in a unique way, definitely check this place out. Anthony and Hami were fantastic hosts. Their property is a wonderful retreat, off the beaten path in what seems like the middle of the jungle. It was amazing to be able to sleep with the giant barn doors open and wake up to the island breeze every morning.
Thank you Anthony and Hami for an amazing experience on Kaua'i!
Excellent stay, the location was beautiful. Anthony and Hami were wonderful hosts.
Anthony has done an incredible job designing and hand-building the three structures on his property. Each is a beautiful piece of art crafted of reclaimed materials from Thailand.
The Zen Root is on the ground floor of the middle building and is located underneath Anthony & Hami’s kitchen (noise from above was NOT a problem). The Root is described as an “open air structure” and while that is an accurate description I want to elaborate. Perhaps I should have more carefully considered what “open air” would mean in a tropical setting. Due to the airflow it actually stayed relatively cool throughout the day (though we weren’t there much during the day) and night; however, this is the tropics so the humidity is a bit unavoidable. The Root was clean and fairly appointed but it was not free from some crawly friends and insects. The net over the bed did a mostly good job keeping our friends out, but there was that one nighttime visitor. Note that there are other rooms available on the property, one of which is a second floor room which seemed to be a bit more enclosed than the Root.
Much thanks for the guidebooks left out for us on the table: Kauai Revealed is a great guide to the island. While we didn't use the bikes, Anthony has them available for all guests along with an assortment of beach gear which came in handy.
The final lowdown:
Overall I think the Zen Root is a unique place in a beautiful setting. But, I don’t think it is for everyone. It’s described as being a “quiet…” but it only sort of fits that description. While it is in fact quiet from any traffic or the like, the space is filled with the (sometimes loud) sounds of nature. Staying at the Root could probably be considered luxury glamping, at which point I consider the pricing to be leaning towards the high side. Before staying here be sure to be comfortable sharing it with some crawlers and I’d suggest not being a light sleeper. While chickens are commonplace on Kauai, I suspect that the early AM “cock-a-doodle-do” is quite a bit louder when you don’t have four enclosed walls. Before staying here: I think it’s important to make sure you know what you want in your BnB and to ask yourself, “what’s my zen?”

We are a happy couple who like to garden, go to the beach, travel, ski, bike, hike, build houses, do mosaics, create with recycled mediums, cook, dance and just be.
