The Zen Root is on a beautiful, rustic retreat and event sanctuary located on the island of Kaua’i. The land is situated just a few minutes walk from the protected Moloaa Bay, and is just 30 minutes from the airport. Moloaa, which translates to “the matted root,” is known for its farming community and rural, “off the beaten track” feel.
Our mission is to connect people to the beauty of Kaua'i, and our spaces have been created to blend seamlessly with the nature that surrounds us. We strive to be as “eco-friendly” as we can, and to minimize our impact on our surroundings. The buildings are constructed of reclaimed teak and sandalwood from 150 year old buildings in Thailand. We also incorporate earthen floors, exterior walls, and reclaimed granite in the kitchen and bathroom. The structures are all working pieces of art, incorporating mosaics and statues.
The Matted Root (the name of the land) is a place to remember our connection to the wonder of life. It is a place to relax, unplug, and experience life the way it once was. Come enjoy the open air structures, the healing ocean, and the beauty that is Old Kaua’i. We look forward to sharing the wonder of Moloaa with you.

Bikes, beach chairs, fins and snokling gear, yoga mats, surf boards, tandem kayak, spear guns, fishing poles, beach towels, scuba tank, boogie boards, and Moloaa Bay.
We are happy to talk with our guest if they want to know about anything. We also are happy to let our guest have their own personal retreat time without interuptions.
We are just a few minutes from Moloaa Bay, which is great for swimming, snokling on the north and south sides, enjoying the nice beaches and hiking to the north point for sunrise to see turtles or whales.
We also have Moloaa fruit stand just up the road for coffee, smoothies, sandwiches; as well as a good health food store 10 minutes drive to the north. Also Common ground garden restaurant across from the health food store has organic and local breakfast and lunches that are wonderful.
We really recommend renting a car due to the fact that Kaua'i is very spread out.
That said, the bus stop is up the hill at Moloaa fruit stand and hitch hiking is common and easy in Kauai.

What can I say. My stay at Zen Root was beyond wonderful. I love Kauai. The friendships made. The meals we shared. The most beautiful Moloaa Bay. The hypnotic sound of the ocean and gentle tropical breeze putting me to sleep at night. The fresh picked grapefruit I couldn't get enough of. The simplicity of it all. I could go on and on. It was a powerful experience that passed much too quickly. But most of all....dear sweet Anthony and Hami. It is like I've known you for a long time. What you have created is deep and awesomely beautiful. A little bit of paradise. Big big hugs. Much peace, love and light.
Anthony has built up an astoundingly beautiful and unique property. Very close to one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Anthony was very kind and generous. Access to the boogie boards and snorkeling gear was fantastic for us. He also had surf boards, a kayak and bikes. In our experience, The Zen Root was maybe a little more rustic than we were expecting for this trip. But that's just us.
If your are looking to be connected to nature on a unique and wonderful property...This is it. Was a great location to explore the North from! Kauai is amazing!
Wonderful place to stay! You won't regret it!
Zen Root is a warm, wonderful, and magical space with personal touches throughout. Listen to the waves while falling asleep and wake up to the quirky good morning sounds of distant roosters. Anthony and Hami are generous and gracious guests and have built a spectacular wonderland minutes away from Moloaa Beach. We found the location perfect for our adventures. When we came back from our long day and we loved the ambience and artistic touches of Zen Root. The space is only second to the hosts whom make it so special. Highly recommend and a must stay if you want an enchanting and peaceful stay.

We had a great time staying with Anthony and Hami. The Zen Root room is spacious and comfortable, the nearby Moloa'a Bay is beautiful and the fruit stand on the corner makes the best morning smoothies!
Anthony was gracious and accommodating. We had alot of fun getting to know him and the wonderful place he has built in this little part of paradise.
Don't expect luxury here. But if you like something that is creative, rustic, connected to nature and quiet, this is the place for you. We only stayed here for half our trip (the other half in a hotel) and by the end we wished we had bunked here for the whole time.
Thanks Anthony for helping us have an incredible time in Kauai. We hope to be back soon! Dara & Jesse
When my girlfriend and I were deciding on vacation destinations, I was originally hesitant to go to any of the Hawaiian islands due to my perception of an overwhelming tourism culture. I do not like to spend my limited amount of free time on overpacked, hotel ridden beaches.
That is why we chose to spend our vacation on Anthony's property in the Zen Root. If you are really looking to get away from it all, this is the place to go. Although the property is only a short drive from the main highway, you will feel like you are worlds away, surrounded by lush Kauaian jungle. It is a perfect location for those looking to explore both the north and south shores of Kauai. It is also only a short walk to a pretty secluded beach. I never saw more than 10 people on the beach at one time.
Disclaimer: this listing is perfect for what I was looking for, but it will not be optimal for everyone. The Zen root is an open air structure that is exposed to the outdoors. While staying here, you will be up close an personal with nature. Yes, this includes some encounters with bugs (nothing harmful). If you are not fond of nature, bugs, hiking, camping, etc this is probably not the place for you. For those of you who live on the more adventurous side of life, look no further.
Thank you for the awesome experience Anthony!

My wife and I had a fantastic 13-night stay in Hami and Anthony's Zen Root. Hami and Anthony were warm, welcoming, gracious hosts, more than willing to offer advice and assistance, but not at all intrusive. We loved the lodgings. Moloa'a Bay was close to the "action" in Hanalei and Kapa'a but felt far from the throng of tourists, and very peaceful. Zen Root is the lower floor underneath Hami and Anthony's kitchen, and nestled between their main house and the Ocean View house. As such, it's not entirely isolated, and during the day you can hear people coming and going outside, and folks cooking upstairs in the early evening, but it was very quiet at night. The space has a nice little kitchen area, nice bathroom, clawfoot tub and shower, and the main area is wide open and spacious, and has a warm, inviting feel to it. Two queen beds, couch, table, dresser. The wall facing the ocean is actually a wide-open barn-door which lets in the breeze and makes you feel like you're sleeping in the jungle... if you stand on tip-toes, you can see the bay. We loved this, but keep in mind this is not a hermetically-sealed and sterilized space, so if you're looking for extra privacy or just aren't down with jungle sounds or breezy nights or the insect phylum, you might do better in the Ocean View house. Wi-fi was available at the common area/kitchen about 100 yards down the hill. Anthony and Hami also have a shed packed full of all sorts of beach-gear and bikes, which we made very good use of, and probably saved us tons of money. Basically, we felt like Zen Root was a great deal on a homey little Kauai hideaway, and we can't wait to come back. Mahalo, Anthony and Hami!
I enjoyed staying at Zen Root beyond my expectations! This place is an architectural jewel created with sophistication, love and incredible sensitivity for the land and surrounding nature.I felt so connected to nature and yet had all the comfort of a 5 star (website hidden) hosts Anthony
and Hami were very graceful and attentive to whatever I needed. They care so much about their guests and are constantly working on maintaining and improving the environment in the whole compound.I loved that I could walk to Moloa beach every morning - it is so beautiful and secluded! I definitely would like to come again!
What really made our first trip to Hawaii special was staying at Anthony and Hami's beautiful/serene jungle retreat. The space is exactly as pictured and even though we were literally a step away from nature (the studio is open to the outdoors), we still had all the modern conveniences. It's the perfect place to call home for a few days as we explored the island and disconnected from the world. We loved everything from waking up to the crowing of roosters, to Mogley (the pup) following us around, to the lovely, secluded beach a short walk away. Anthony is a terrific host and went above and beyond to provide everything we needed...including changing the flat tire on our jeep! Big Mahalos.
