The Zen Root is on a beautiful, rustic retreat sanctuary located on the island of Kaua’i. The land is situated just a few minutes walk from the protected Moloaa Bay, and is just 30 minutes from the airport. Moloaa, is known for its farming community and rural, “off the beaten track” feel.
Our mission is to connect people to the beauty of Kaua'i, and our spaces have been created to blend seamlessly with the nature that surrounds us. We strive to be as “eco-friendly” as we can, and to minimize our impact on our surroundings. The buildings are constructed of reclaimed teak and sandalwood from 150 year old buildings in Thailand. We also incorporate earthen floors, exterior walls, and reclaimed granite in the kitchen and bathroom. The structures are all working pieces of art, incorporating mosaics and statues.
This is a place to remember our connection to the wonder of life. It is a place to relax, unplug, and experience life the way it once was. Come enjoy the open air structures, the healing ocean, and the beauty that is Old Kaua’i. We look forward to sharing the beauty of Moloaa with you.

Interaction with Guests
We are happy to talk with our guest if they want to know about anything. We also are happy to let our guest have their own personal retreat time without interuptions.
We are just a few minutes from Moloaa Bay, which is great for swimming, snokling on the north and south sides, enjoying the nice beaches and hiking to the north point for sunrise to see turtles or whales.
We also have Moloaa fruit stand just up the road for coffee, smoothies, sandwiches; as well as a good health food store 10 minutes drive to the north. Also Common ground garden restaurant across from the health food store has organic and local breakfast and lunches that are wonderful.
We really recommend renting a car due to the fact that Kaua'i is very spread out.
That said, the bus stop is up the hill 2.4 miles at Moloaa fruit stand and hitch hiking is common and easy in Kauai.
We appreciate people who like the beauty of quietness and are interested in the natural ways of Kauai. No smoking indoors, moderate drinking okay.
My husband and I landed here for the first eight days of our honeymoon, we stayed in the Zen Root. I have to say that I really really loved the experience. It was a perfect entrance to the island. If you are looking for a condo in the suburbs, this is not for you. Think outdoors, Swiss family Robinson feel. We were in the what was most likely the nicest room, with everything we needed, with a wide open field and a view of the ocean. We were were within walking distance to one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. We had our own private kitchen and bathroom and the bathtub rocked my world! Seriously, if you want to good bathtub this is where you come. Anthony and Hami work so hard and they are such a delight. And I met some really cool people! When We come back to the island, We will definitely be staying here again. Aloha!
Anthony was a very kind and considerate host. He is a genuinely nice guy, which is what makes leaving a negative review so difficult.
We knew that Zen Root was an open-air accommodation so we weren't expecting a lot of creature comforts. Here's what we experienced and wish we had known before booking.
Expect to be woken up in the middle of the night by roosters crowing. They don't wait until dawn to start. Howling winds coming off the ocean that rattle the wooden doors throughout the night were also fairly common.
We found cockroaches on the kitchen counter, crawling over the dishes and even underneath the pillow in one of the beds. And there were a few mice visiting the kitchen.
Be prepared for lots of mosquitoes and plenty of itching. Even with bug-spray and mosquito nets over the bed, we were covered with 20-30 fresh bites a day.
We paid for 8 nights but we left after 4 because we were so uncomfortable. In the end, we were just happy to get out of there. In my opinion, fair market value for Zen Root is about half what is being charged. Think twice before booking here.
Julia told us that she left because she had brown spots all over back and was very concerned and shocked that her health provider was not represented on the island. I asked whether the rash on her back itches and she said no and then I asked to look at it and it was just a few little red spots, but she said they had already booked a ticket home so she could see her doctor. I had a friend who was here at the time and he was able to tell her what it was and that it was a common tropical fungus that would disappear when applying Apple vinegar. My wife offer to prepare the remedy, but she was into much of a hurry to get to the airport.
Never once did she mention any of the issues that she brings up in the review above. I could tell she was disturbed but she didn't address what the situation was.
Like the description says, it's an open air space, we use no chemicals or poisons, and you are welcome to read all of our other reviews and determine for yourself if there is more to this picture than meets the eye.
Zen Root was a great place to stay, the most unique I have ever visited on vacation. The open air feeling and the views of the ocean were fantastic. I really enjoyed the outdoor-style experience of the space, the way it is decorated, and the way it is lit in the evenings. Anthony and Hami were very gracious hosts (as we their dogs Pali and Mogley). I had a great time!
Anthony and hami were wonderful hosts. The room was an amazing open air experience. It felt like we were in Bali. It had everything we could want and Anthony made sure we knew all the best tips for the area. They even let us play with Paul and mogli as we were homesick for our own dog!
We had a great time at Zen Root; Pauli and Mogli, their puppies, were a real treat for two dog lovers like us! Each day they would come downstairs for a snack, hang out with us and keep us company! Anthony and Hami were warm, hospitable and answered all our questions quickly and courteously; this is a beautiful property with great guests, dogs, mother nature and a non-resort vibe perfect for outdoorsy types, world travelers and Kauai fans! We highly recommend leaving the large, east facing doors that face the ocean open 24/7 so you can get a good breeze, watch the sun rise and Paul and Mogli can get in whenever they want! :-)
