Zen Root

House - Private room · Moloaa Road, Kilauea, HI 96754, United States

The Space

Listen and look at the Ocean from this large spaceous 1200' square foot room with kitchen, bath and living area. The walls are earth covered with recycled granite mosaic and glass bottles with earth mortar that give off a wonderful warm feeling. The floors are earthen with large 150 year old teak trees supporting the natural birch ceiling. Large original oil paintings complement the open feeling you will enjoy while staying here.
The bathroom has a double granite sink, toilet, shower, extra long antique claw foot iron tub, earthen walls with granite mosaics with old salvaged teak doors and walls from Thailand.

The kitchen has a full sink, two burner stove, fridge and pantry area.
We have bikes, wifi, beach items all included in your stay.

The Zen Root is on a beautiful, rustic retreat and event sanctuary located on the island of Kaua’i. The land is situated just a few minutes walk from the protected Moloaa Bay, and is just 30 minutes from the airport. Moloaa, is known for its farming community and rural, “off the beaten track” feel.

Our mission is to connect people to the beauty of Kaua'i, and our spaces have been created to blend seamlessly with the nature that surrounds us. We strive to be as “eco-friendly” as we can, and to minimize our impact on our surroundings. The buildings are constructed of reclaimed teak and sandalwood from 150 year old buildings in Thailand. We also incorporate earthen floors, exterior walls, and reclaimed granite in the kitchen and bathroom. The structures are all working pieces of art, incorporating mosaics and statues.
This is a place to remember our connection to the wonder of life. It is a place to relax, unplug, and experience life the way it once was. Come enjoy the open air structures, the healing ocean, and the beauty that is Old Kaua’i. We look forward to sharing the beauty of Moloaa with you.

Guest Access

Bikes, beach chairs, fins and snokling gear, yoga mats, surf boards, tandem kayak, spear guns, fishing poles, beach towels, scuba tank, boogie boards, and Moloaa Bay.

Interaction with Guests

We are happy to talk with our guest if they want to know about anything. We also are happy to let our guest have their own personal retreat time without interuptions.

The Neighborhood

We are just a few minutes from Moloaa Bay, which is great for swimming, snokling on the north and south sides, enjoying the nice beaches and hiking to the north point for sunrise to see turtles or whales.
We also have Moloaa fruit stand just up the road for coffee, smoothies, sandwiches; as well as a good health food store 10 minutes drive to the north. Also Common ground garden restaurant across from the health food store has organic and local breakfast and lunches that are wonderful.

Getting around

We really recommend renting a car due to the fact that Kaua'i is very spread out.
That said, the bus stop is up the hill at Moloaa fruit stand and hitch hiking is common and easy in Kauai.

  • Our family of 4 had a great stay in the Zen Root room! We had plenty of space, comfortable beds with a breeze (email hidden), and a great view. We enjoyed borrowing boogie boards and snorkeling gear to take to local beaches and appreciated all of Anthony's advice about things to see and places to find great food. Anthony and Hami are generous, helpful and responsive hosts! We hope to go back soon. My older son said he will tell all of his friends about the farm. My younger son said he won't tell anyone so that we keep the place a secret.

Thank you for being such a great family and staying with us. Tell Logan I forgot to tell him I checked on my sugar cane that we have growing and it was not ready for harvest, but next time ayy...!
    Take great care,
    Anthony and Hami

  • Beautiful space! You can hear the sound of the waves and walk to the lovely beach. It is a great location; a car is definitely recommended. Yummy juice/smoothies nearby. Lots of relaxation zones - cushy mats on the floor, 2 beds, hammocks, a large claw foot tub. Well-equipped and is as mentioned in the description and photos. Highly recommended!

  • We loved our stay with Anthony and Hami, both extremely charming people. Although there were several other people staying on the property during our visit, we hardly ever saw a soul and it felt very spacious and private.
The location was great. The beach (a 10 minute walk away, or borrow one of the bikes) is beautiful and as there is not much parking there, very sparsely populated. There is a great juice and coffee bar close by and also a new, well stocked natural food store.
Anthony designed and constructed the asian inspired buildings which are full of his unique artistic touches. As others have mentioned, we got to enjoy being up close and personal with nature. Most of the time we left the huge doors to the outside open all night and it was perfect, except for a couple of days when it got cold and very windy, and then we had to close them.
We are missing blending fresh fruit smoothies in paradise in the mornings! Staying at the Zen Root was the cream topping on our trip.

  • What can I say. My stay at Zen Root was beyond wonderful. I love Kauai. The friendships made. The meals we shared. The most beautiful Moloaa Bay. The hypnotic sound of the ocean and gentle tropical breeze putting me to sleep at night. The fresh picked grapefruit I couldn't get enough of. The simplicity of it all. I could go on and on. It was a powerful experience that passed much too quickly. But most of all....dear sweet Anthony and Hami. It is like I've known you for a long time. What you have created is deep and awesomely beautiful. A little bit of paradise. Big big hugs. Much peace, love and light.

Ahhh, what the world needs is more "Merry Jerry's"... ;-} You are a true Merry Prankster, a Bruddha from another Mother, a gift to peace, and we love the love and Merriment that is you.

  • Anthony has built up an astoundingly beautiful and unique property. Very close to one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Anthony was very kind and generous. Access to the boogie boards and snorkeling gear was fantastic for us. He also had surf boards, a kayak and bikes. In our experience, The Zen Root was maybe a little more rustic than we were expecting for this trip. But that's just us.
If your are looking to be connected to nature on a unique and wonderful property...This is it. Was a great location to explore the North from! Kauai is amazing!

  • Zen Root is a warm, wonderful, and magical space with personal touches throughout. Listen to the waves while falling asleep and wake up to the quirky good morning sounds of distant roosters. Anthony and Hami are generous and gracious guests and have built a spectacular wonderland minutes away from Moloaa Beach. We found the location perfect for our adventures. When we came back from our long day and we loved the ambience and artistic touches of Zen Root. The space is only second to the hosts whom make it so special. Highly recommend and a must stay if you want an enchanting and peaceful stay.

  • We had a great time staying with Anthony and Hami. The Zen Root room is spacious and comfortable, the nearby Moloa'a Bay is beautiful and the fruit stand on the corner makes the best morning smoothies!
Anthony was gracious and accommodating. We had alot of fun getting to know him and the wonderful place he has built in this little part of paradise.
Don't expect luxury here. But if you like something that is creative, rustic, connected to nature and quiet, this is the place for you. We only stayed here for half our trip (the other half in a hotel) and by the end we wished we had bunked here for the whole time.
Thanks Anthony for helping us have an incredible time in Kauai. We hope to be back soon! Dara & Jesse

  • When my girlfriend and I were deciding on vacation destinations, I was originally hesitant to go to any of the Hawaiian islands due to my perception of an overwhelming tourism culture. I do not like to spend my limited amount of free time on overpacked, hotel ridden beaches.

That is why we chose to spend our vacation on Anthony's property in the Zen Root. If you are really looking to get away from it all, this is the place to go. Although the property is only a short drive from the main highway, you will feel like you are worlds away, surrounded by lush Kauaian jungle. It is a perfect location for those looking to explore both the north and south shores of Kauai. It is also only a short walk to a pretty secluded beach. I never saw more than 10 people on the beach at one time.

Disclaimer: this listing is perfect for what I was looking for, but it will not be optimal for everyone. The Zen root is an open air structure that is exposed to the outdoors. While staying here, you will be up close an personal with nature. Yes, this includes some encounters with bugs (nothing harmful). If you are not fond of nature, bugs, hiking, camping, etc this is probably not the place for you. For those of you who live on the more adventurous side of life, look no further.

Thank you for the awesome experience Anthony!
