Unplug or stay connected as you like in this recently built home tucked away in the storied hamlet of Loon Lake. Plenty of hiking, swimming, paddling, fishing, snowshoeing, skiing, snowmobiling, and more. Just 40 minutes from Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, or a quick 2hr day trip to Montreal or Burlington. This whimsically decorated getaway is filled with books, board games, and oddball taxidermy, and has plenty of wifi for movie nights too. Perfect for family and friends, or a quiet WFH escape.
The space
The house is situated on a hill overlooking a mountain and valley view. Access to is very easy, just off the main road which is plowed and maintained diligently in the winter months. The house faces east for morning sun and nearly the whole east side of the house is windows to maximize the view of mountains, valley, and woods.
The house is 2 stories with a full unfinished basement. Laundry washer/dryer is in the basement level, accessed from inside the house.
The main level features an open floor plan with kitchen, dining, and living/lounging area all connected. There is a full bathroom on the main level as well, and from May through October there is access to a fully enclosed porch for additional lounging/dining/sleeping space. This porch includes an additional dining table and chairs which is perfect for giant puzzles, to use as a large desk space, or just a different spot to eat and enjoy the view. There is also a futon style couch that folds out into a queen size bed in this rustic styled porch space.
Upstairs on the second level there are 3 bedrooms, a full bathroom, and a cozy library styled lounge area for reading or contemplation. Two bedrooms face the mountain view, get loads of early morning sun, and each have a queen bed. The third bedroom faces west and is for late sleepers who enjoy a cozy space and a double/full size bed. There are dressers in each bedroom, closets in the two east facing rooms, and a rack for hanging clothes in the west facing room.
Outside on the east side of the house is a large deck with folding lounge chairs and side tables. Here you can sit and bird watch, enjoy the view, the hummingbirds at the feeder, and observe the flower garden deciding how it will thrive in the constantly changing Adirondack weather. :)
I am a professional creative who appreciates color and joy, so I've decorated the place with a sense of whimsy and nostalgia. Enjoy the random curios, oddball taxidermy, and eclectic wall art. Feel free to add your mark to the farmhouse style dinner table as many before you have done.
The lake is private to homeowners with deeded rights and their guests. Congrats, that includes you! It is accessed from Loon Lake Terrace, just a 5 minute walk from the house - up and over the hill into the main part of the hamlet. On the way, during the warmer months, you can stop in to the only shop in the hamlet "The Loon" which serves coffee and tasty baked goods among other things. At the beach area of the lake you will find shared use chairs and picnic table, a sand pit, and stairs down to the water's edge where there is a gentle sandy bottomed slope out to a deeper designated swimming area. The lake is exceptionally clean and refreshing. It's an excellent swim in any area, a great paddle, and fun to spin or fly fish. In the designated swimming spot near the beach area there is a floating dock where no fishing or motorized watercraft are allowed. If you bring personal non motorized watercraft such as kayaks or paddleboards the put-in is at this beach area. Motorized watercraft access to the lake is not included in this rental. Please make sure to thoroughly rinse your personal watercraft at the house prior to putting in at the lake in order to avoid cross contamination from invasive plant species from other bodies of water, thank you! During the coldest winter months the lake freezes over and offers opportunities for ice fishing, skating, or just enjoying beautiful snowy views. For your safety and enjoyment make sure to inquire and test first before heading out onto the ice!!
There are many trails and logging roads in the area for bike rides and walks, so plan to bring bicycles and sturdy shoes. In the winter there are snowmobile trails aplenty. Many of these trails and roads are also excellent for snowshoeing and xcountry skiing.
If the weather isn't cooperating or you just want a cozy slow time at the house there are board games and books and dvds and - a rarity in this rural area - reliable strong wifi plus Verizon and AT&T carrier service. Most of the surrounding area is a cell phone no-signal zone. For this reason I do keep a landline for 911 emergencies and so people can call in to get in touch with you if for some reason your cell carrier doesn't use Verizon/AT&T towers and you aren't able to make wifi calls.
There is plenty to do and lots of rest/relaxation to be had in Loon Lake, but if you're looking for a different adventure, you can take a day trip to Montreal (just 2 hours away!) or to Burlington, VT (also 2 hours, but no passport needed!) or head into Saranac Lake or Lake Placid, only 30-40 minutes away. Lake Placid is a great bustling tourist destination featuring Olympic training facilities, restaurants and shopping, and spa activities. Saranac Lake is a historically significant utterly charming small town with a thriving arts and culture scene, a great library, and a less touristy more family owned/operated vibe. A visit to Hex&Hop Brewing in nearby Bloomingdale is a must, and during the summer months Donnelly's Soft Ice Cream should be used as a daily meal replacement program. :)
Guest access
Guests have access to the entire house with the exception of a locked storage room in the basement, the detached garage, and during the months of November through April there is no access to the enclosed porch room.
Guests may access the lake at the beach area off of Loon Lake Terrace. There is no motorized watercraft access included with this rental. Personal watercraft such as kayaks or paddleboards must be thoroughly rinsed at the house prior to putting in at the lake beach area.
For guests staying long enough to receive mail and other deliveries handled by USPS, please inquire about mailbox access.
Please note, there extremely limited cell signal in Loon Lake and wifi is only available via satellite. I have strong Verizon and moderately strong AT&T cell signal at the house as well as reliable and relatively strong wifi, plus I maintain a landline nearly exclusively for 911 emergency service purposes in case it's necessary.
Please note this property is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible and has a number of potential barriers for people with mobility impairment. There are five steps up to the front door from the parking area, a curving wide staircase to the sleeping area on the second floor as well as a curving narrower unfinished staircase to the basement level, and a single step to get in/out of the porch room on the main floor. The deck is accessed from the yard by 3 steps or a single step in/out of the house. The grounds are navigable but uneven in places and the entire property is situated on a hill.
Other things to note
I prefer weekly or long weekend rentals, but I am open to different arrangements. Please message me with any requests!
