The Space

I really love living in Shimokitazawa- it's a laid-back, funky escape from the hustle and bustle of Shibuya and Shinjuku, while only being minutes away from both. The apartment itself, like the town, is an oasis- a peaceful garden view in the midst of a happening neighborhood.

The apartment has a large window facing the morning sun and a Japanese garden below. It is quite a peaceful way to wake up in the morning. The apartment itself is average size for a Japanese apartment, but probably small by most Western standards.

Amenities:
*fresh, professionally pressed and clean towels and linens
*a double bed (and a sofa bed and futon for multiple guests)
*pocket wifi- free internet to carry around town
*fan & air conditioner
*washing machine
*32in TV
*microwave
*functional small kitchen and dishes
*great hosts who are close by to help you out :-)

Note: Although we will allow a group of four, we do not recommend it because it will be cramped, especially for taller/larger people.

The Neighborhood

As described in the Fly With Me blog: Neat and orderly is not something you would describe Shimokitazawa. Shimokita, as adorningly called by the locals, is how you would imagine a neighbourhood would be if it was run by hippies. This vibrant yet laid-back place has become somewhat of a playground for youngsters and music lovers. While Harajuku has developed a notorious reputation as a highly commercialized neighbourhood for the eccentrics to see and be seen, this hip enclave prides itself in not trying too hard and through its relaxed vibe, it has gained popularity amongst hipsters who just want to have simple fun and bask in the freedom that only comes with being young.
The urban structure of Shimokitazawa is an intricate and complex jumble of interlocking narrow alleyways. It is this same chaos that has become the nesting ground for creativity, a catalyst for the development of arts, music and theatre in the area and has added colour and pop to this previously quiet low-rise residential area. Channel your inner bohemian explorer and prepare to get lost in knick knacks crammed in cool pop-up stores, unexpected street art, indie music and way too much yakitori.
Once there, the level-crossing of the electric rail-track bares an old town feel and you will be immediately greeted with a litter of tiny, quaint cafes, second-hand goods store and live music venues at every corner. All the shops are uniquely designed with their own eclectic aesthetic and items for sale can often be found spilling onto to the streets. Things are relatively inexpensive (read: college students’ budget) and it’s not uncommon to score 4 vinyls for under US$15.
At night, this walking neighbourhood transforms itself into a true music haven. As expected, while varied, the music is more alternative than mainstream. Music events are held here all year round, one being Shimokitazawa Sound Cruising where 15 different music venues participate for 12 hours of music goodness at a ticket charge of US$70.
A local haunt more than a tourist hotspot, it is recommended that you save a day and discover the magic of Shimokitazawa before government plans get set in motion and Shimokitazawa finds itself like the rest of its cosmopolitan counterparts: with high rise developments and a highway which has threatened to cut through this rare little neighbourhood. That is unless the Save the Shimokitazawa volunteer group manages to successfully petition it’s way around.

Getting around

Our apartment is a four minute walk from the West Exit of Shimokitazawa station, and close to all the bohemian, trendy, and interesting boutiques that make up the town of Shimokitazawa. Shimokitazawa is conveniently located just 5-6 minutes by express train from Shibuya (eight minutes by regular train) and eight minutes to Shinjuku. But, many travelers and locals alike choose to spend their time here because of the charm and energy of the town itself, without the huge crowds of the closeby metropolis. Even if you stay somewhere else, you should definitely visit Shimokitazawa just to see what I mean! (More info about Shimokitazawa below)

  • Just a perfect stay. Everything as expected and written. Shimo-Kitazawa is that beautiful, little and hip town we wanted. This is the way to enjoy Tokio.

  • Very responsive. All the information you ever need to ease into traveling to Japan/Tokyo for the first time. It is a smaller space than we had anticipated, but still very much adequate for my fiancé and I. Would definitely stay these guys again.

  • First up, there was indeed a garden view. The flat is at one end of a building, with a window opening to a leafy backyard; which is very pleasant, especially on a warm day.

Other reviewers have noted the small size, but after a few days in a reasonably good hotel just outside Tokyo (Chiba) during a conference before staying here, by comparison the flat felt pretty spacious to myself and my partner.

Directions from the hosts were terrific -- the place was easy to find. Some narrow and steep steps, so minimal baggage is helpful (as the host advises). We had a query about a portable wi-fi code, and the response was very quick.

Workable kitchen(ette) and what seems a typical Tokyo bathroom-toilet capsule. Tight, but entirely functional.

But you aren't really staying here to spend much time in the flat. The bo-ho neighbourhood of Shimokitazawa is the draw and the flat is located pretty much in its heart. Plus an easy walk to a train station that takes you to Shibuya and the main inner Tokyo loop-line. Recommended, and we'd stay there again.

You did a really amazing job of describing the apartment and the joys of staying in the Shimokitazawa neighborhood Phil!! The apartment is a lot bigger than a typical Tokyo-sized hotel so we are glad you had the chance to experience staying at the apartment after your time at the hotel. Thanks again for staying with us :)

  • Absolutely beautiful apartment. Love the neighborhood. Comfy bed. The pocket wifi was a godsend. My husband and I stayed here for about a week, and we wished we could've stayed longer! Next time we're in Tokyo, we're definitely coming back.

  • Excellent location in super hip Shimokitazawa.
Very quiet and cool area, with lots of nice restaurants and shops around. Only a few minutes walk from the train station. Very close to Shibuya and Shinjiku by train.
The place is a little small by western standar, but enough for a few nights. Over all we just loved the area.

  • Excellent location, thorough instructions and guide for the apartment which is great especially when being so far away. The apartment is certainly very small, which is to be expected for Tokyo, but I really couldn't imagine how more than 2 adults could ever fit in there. Place is very well setup for travelers/visitors in terms of what it's equipped with (small kitchen, washer, etc.) I recommend staying there.

  • The place is quite small but was ideal for our stay, and had everything we needed. We received lots of useful information upon booking and Jacob was very helpful and responded quickly to my emails before and during our stay. The place was very clean and all the instructions were very clear. The Pocket WiFi was extremely useful too as this was the first stay on our trip so it took us a few days to suss things out. The area is really nice and chilled, although unfortunately we didn't get as much time as we would have like to explore the surroundings. The location is also very handy for the local subway station, only a couple of mins walk away. Overall we were very happy!

  • We were first-time AIRBNB users and after our stay at Jay & Dee's, we will definitely use it again. Jay was very prompt and helpful with all my email inquiries, responding to me within 24 hours of my asking. The directions provided to this place were straight-forward and easy to follow. As far as getting around - 5 minute stroll to SHIMO-KITA Stn, then a train to either SHINJUKU or SHIBUYA was roughly 10 minutes. The train ride to SHIBUYA lets you see Todai (Tokyo University) from the train window.

The place is as what you see in the pictures, warm and comfortable. Laundry, bathrooms, oven toaster and fridge worked well and the mobile wi-fi was a Godsend! The stairs to the apartment were a bit challenging, as they are typical Japanese apartment slim and a little steep, but nothing we couldn't handle.

Shimo-Kita is a wonderful area. There are so many great places, both for shopping and eating, to check out there (PM me if you want info on some Shimo-Kita goodies!). We recommend this place to couples staying in Tokyo who would like a more intimate stay free of the noisy city areas. Completely safe to explore around (night and day) with many bars, dessert places and convenience stores just a hop, skip and a jump away.

Cheers again Jay & Dee - if we ever come back, we hope we can stay at one of your places again!

  • We stayed 10 days here with my boyfriend and really liked the place. It was exactly as described, tiny but clean and the location in Shimokita is just perfect. The area is cozy hipster neighbourhood with vintage clothes shops, cat cafe, ramen, good food and little cafes.
We have been in Tokyo few times before, but this flat with pocket wifi made it really easy to navigate and arrange meetings with locals (who are used to the fact that everyone is available online all the time).
Last but not least: There is even a quality café on the way to station.

  • We had a great stay. The apartment was described well and therefore just what we expected when we arrived. Brilliant location - we really enjoyed exploring the area and being in a quieter and part of the city with just a quick train to Shibuya. Jay and Dee provided really useful information to get to and from the apartment. Would stay again! :)
