About this listing

The space

Hotel La Tranquilidad is a beachfront hotel on the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. This Costa Rican vacation retreat is located on the small island of Palo Seco between Jaco and Quepos/Manuel Antonio. Much of the time the only sounds at this Costa Rica beach hotel are the ocean waves, the tropical birds singing, or the chirping of the tiny lizards. The soft sand, the calming surf, the gentle breezes, and the breathtaking sunrises and sunsets have created a tropical island paradise. It doesn't get any more tranquil than this!

My friend and I stayed here for 2 nights and were lucky enough to have the property all to ourselves. Hotel La Tranquilidad was further off the beaten path than we realized, so we should've came prepared prepared than we did and stopped at the market. However, once we got there, it was well worth the trek as the property itself is breathtaking. Marina and Dennis went above & beyond to accommodate us. The gave us plenty of fresh fruits (mangos, passion fruit, coconuts, etc) from their property, helping get us groceries, and provided suggestions on what to do during out short stay in the area. The rooms were nice and well kept and the beach was all to ourselves. This is definitely somewhere I would recommend to anyone looking for an oasis to stay in and I will stay here again should I find myself back in the area.

This was a hostel experience at a hotel price. Upon booking, the owner texted me and asked whether I preferred air-conditioned room or room with a balcony on the beach. To my great misfortune, I chose the latter. Playa Palo Seco is beautiful, but, sadly, the neighborhood is full of burned down, abandoned buildings and buzzards who are attracted by the trash lying around. The owner was not there when we arrived, but the caretaker gave us a hand-written note from her welcoming us. The room indeed had a beach view, but was small, and looked like a tree house, with loose floorboard which made me afraid of falling through. Lack of air-condition translated into a nightmarish night on a cheap mattress, where my husband and I were afraid to move, because the other would bounce up. In the morning, I discovered that the coffee maker didn't work, and the toilet wouldn't drain. The caretaker was outside sweeping, so I asked him for a plunger, but he couldn't find one and said he would ask someone for one, but then went on sweeping. At this point, there was nothing else to do, but pack and leave, even though we paid for two nights. We ended up paying 30 percent more for a new, exclusive hotel in the Mauel Antonio national reserve, a prime tourist location only 40 miles north.

Hotel La Tranquilidad is off the beaten path but a total oasis! It's well worth the trek - the beach is empty and the sunsets are breathtaking. Marina and Dennis are wonderful hosts, who took us on a kayaking trip and helped us get to town whenever we needed to. The place has a fun community feel and the pool is quite lovely. Make sure to bring your own food!

My husband and I stayed at La Tranquilidad for 4 nights while we were on our honeymoon and it was one of the highlights of our trip! Marina reserved the private room with a balcony for us that looked out onto the beach so we could see the waves rolling in when we ate meals on the balcony. Marina and her husband were out of town while we were there, but their caretaker Denis was extremely helpful and welcoming throughout our stay. He cut down coconuts for us to have each day while we walked on the beach and helped us set up the grill to smoke some chicken for dinner. Their dogs were also friendly and adventurous companions to have around while relaxing or walking on the beach. We had a fantastic time and would definitely go back! One word of warning - if you do go during the rainy season don't forget bug spray :)

We loved Hotel La Tranquilidad. The property is towards the very end of Playa Palo Seco so the beaches are virtually empty. The water is ideal, the hammocks were a welcome retreat in the morning or late afternoon, and everyone was accommodating, friendly, and generous!

We arrived late at night and driving down the dark dirt road for miles and miles made us wonder what we were getting into (don't worry, the ride gets shorter and shorter each time you make it). Although we could tell the ocean was nearby, it was for the most part hidden by darkness (it would be much better to arrive in daylight if possible!). When we finally arrived at the hotel, we had to search and search for our hosts since we had somehow slipped by them in the dark! When we finally found Marina (with the help of another visitor in another room), she was super friendly, apologetic for missing us and very welcoming. When we woke up the next morning and walked to the beach (basically outside the doors), we knew we had chosen the right place after all. The beach is GORGEOUS and there is NOONE else on it. Marina and Dennis provided chairs, towels and plenty of sun and waves for us to enjoy the final few days of our vacation. She has 4 dogs who like to keep watch on the beach and property and they will protect you if any dogs venture near :) (Beware, don't leave anything on the bench outside your room like I did b/c they might think your bathing suit is a toy to play with!) Marina also provided us with a fresh coconut one day with a straw to try a refreshing beverage! We didn't cook in the kitchen but it is amply stocked with all you might need. The ac in the room could be stronger but if you leave it on, it will do the trick. The room itself is basic with a small fridge there as well and the bathroom is beautiful black tile. In short, this place is perfect if you like to be off the beaten track (quite literally ON the dirt track!) running into very few if any people. There are a couple of hotels on the dirt road so you don't have to go all the way to Parrita for meals if you don't bring your own groceries in. We also went to Manuel Antonio from there and it was less than an hour and a pleasure to be far from all those crowds! One final note, in the reservation process, there was a slight misunderstanding about the rate we would be paying. Marina graciously agreed to let us pay the lesser price, honoring the price I thought we would be paying. She also let us use the land line phone when our cell phone did not get any service there. They are awesome hosts and if we ever make it back to Costa Rica we will certainly be headed to Hotel La Tranquilidad.

My wife and I enjoyed our stay in Palo Seco. La Tranquilidad is off the beaten path and provided a private oasis while touring Costa Rica. We enjoyed our conversations with those guests we had the opportunity to chat. Although others were staying at the same time, the layout of the property provides many private spaces to share a moment. Hotel La Tranquilidad offered everything I expected from my first airbnb experience. Dennis and Mariana were kind and gracious hosts. The dogs provided much needed four-legged companionship for an early morning walk on the beach. I sense not many visitors from beyond Costa Rica would ever know about Playa Palo Seco without airbnb. We would definitely stay again if in the area.
