A quiet hideaway on two floors of The Foreman House. Built in the 1830’s, the property is a Class 1 Historic Site and formerly part of The Leiper Estate, "Avondale" circa 1785, nestled in a valley on the banks of Crum Creek in Wallingford, PA.
Ideal for a romantic overnight or weekend getaway, for a week long stay to visit the many historic and cultural sites in the area, or for visiting college students or parents. Visiting professors and medical students performing residencies at area hospitals will find an ideal, quiet retreat to study or simply unwind and rest.
Beautiful, original wide plank hardwood floors warm your private, two level space. The lower level on the second floor of The Foreman House includes a recently-renovated, open-space full kitchen, dining and living area with a quaint, cast-iron gas stove. The upper level on the third floor includes a beautifully furnished, romantic, open-space bedroom also with quaint, cast-iron gas stove, and a vintage-modernized full bath and soaking tub.
Relax in the modern adirondack chairs on your private deck overlooking the spring-fed waterfall and brook, or walk the beautifully-landscaped and secluded grounds, footbridge, and paths, surrounded on two sides by Springhaven Country Club and the other by Avondale Road and Crum Creek. Walk down Avondale Road along Crum Creek to the creekside park on The Leiper Estate, and visit the The Thomas Leiper House and museum, circa 1785.
The Den of Antiquity offers old world charm and new, modern amenities with a sense of seclusion near Philadelphia International Airport, Swarthmore and its renowned College, Media, Springfield, as well as minutes away from shopping and dining in nearly every direction. The Septa Bus line is a convenient fifty yard walk away, and the Wallingford Station on the Septa Media-Elwyn Rail Line, as well as Swarthmore Station just a few bus stops, and minutes away.
The first floor of The Foreman House and the attached Studio are offices occupied by a design firm from Mondays through Fridays, and are rarely occupied on weekends.
Wonderful hosts and a beautiful place to stay just outside of Philly. We only wish we could have stayed longer.
My boyfriend and I can't say enough about how wonderful our stay at Bill and Shawne's home was or how accommodating and helpful they were. I accidentally made our reservation on the wrong date but showed up to the house on the day that I intended to (whoops!) but Bill and Shawne quickly came to our rescue and got the house ready for us! Once we got settled in they were happy to answer any questions about our stay.
The house itself was the perfect setting for a romantic weekend away. It's quiet, has beautiful light, the bed is so comfy, and I wanted to take the bathtub home with me! They did a really wonderful job of designing a joyful space. I would love to stay again and recommend this or any of their other properties for a stay!
We truly had the best time at our stay at The Foreman House! The house is BEAUTIFUL! I cant say enough about the lovely fully equipped kitchen, the stunning bedroom & bathroom or the beautiful outdoor surrounding areas! We had a super late arrival and it was nice having an easy "check in" and they had even left wine, cheese & grapes for us, that totally hit the spot after our long day of traveling! I wish I had more time to stay there & I will totally be trying to stay at The Forman House the next time I'm in Philly!
My husband and I spent the weekend in the Philadelphia area and really enjoyed our stay at the 'Den'! The house is very tastefully restored, clean, and comfortable. We loved the bamboo and Japanese maples in the gardens outside. Bill and Shawne were gracious and helpful hosts.
My wife and I stayed at the Foreman House for two months during a relocation for work. We loved our stay! The charming house sat on a wooded property that was accessed by a little footbridge crossing a creek. The house was historic, while having all the modern conveniences. The bedroom was gorgeous and the bed was very comfortable. The open concept bedroom/bathroom with soaking tub was unique and romantic.
Bill and his wife were the perfect hosts. Every detail had been thought of, including a welcome treat. Bill was prompt and attentive, answering any questions we had, but also respectful, allowing us to enjoy the quiet of the property.
My wife and I will always cherish our time at the Foreman House.
Bill is a really great host--kind, responsive, accommodating, and helpful. He was very warm and welcoming when I arrived, and gave me a tour of the property; Bill explained the history of the house, as well as the details and care he and his wife put into restoring the property. I was so thankful for his responsiveness throughout the booking process.
The house itself is absolutely amazing. Surrounded by woods and set beside a stream, the house makes for a tranquil retreat only 20 minutes from Philadelphia. The rooms are beautiful, with reclaimed finishes, an immaculate kitchen, and stunning hardwood floors. I used the house for a photo shoot, but I would highly recommend staying at The Foreman House...it's a gorgeous place with great hosts in a beautiful area. Couldn't get much better than that.
