Description

The Space

Peaceful and serene, Spanish style old California condo, 2 bdrm/1 bath (Comfy queen bed; comfortable twin day bed w/detached trundle in 2nd room--day bed w/pull-out trundle w/REAL twin mattress; families of up to 5 have found it extremely comfortable and restful; trundle completely separates from day bed vs attached), wood floors, ceiling fans, laundry onsite, fully modernized kitchen, etc.; please note that storage space is at a MINIMUM as this is an old house AND our personal residence-closets/dressers are in use w/our belongings but we are happy to clear some drawer and closet space for you if you need that (we clear 2 small closets and several drawers for long term guests, rest assured!); 40 mins from beautiful Hwy 1 and Northern Calif beaches; 5 minutes from multiple baylands and mountain preserves; 10 minute bike ride to Stanford University and bustling University Ave in downtown Palo Alto; 3 blocks to CalTrain (easy commuter train to SF, San Jose and everywhere in between!); 1 block from major bus routes to all areas. Cat care is required!

Strictly NON-SMOKING ONLY--indoors/outdoors.

Very quiet condo complex (only 6 units, total). Mine is a stand-alone home with a large, beautifully kept garden and deck. The neighborhood is quiet and the neighbors friendly! Bustling Calif Ave. with an abundance of retail shops, cafes, bakeries, restaurants, parks and a top-notch grocery store is only a five minute walk from here.

Enjoy Sunday mornings at the Cal Ave. organic farmer's market--1/2 the neighborhood closes to traffic from 6 am to 1:00 p.m. Vendors sell their scrumptious gourmet delicacies -- everything from Indian food to Mexican fare to fresh baked breads and other gastric delights!

Entire home and garden w/parking.

We are available by cell almost all the time. In the event we will be out of reach of cell coverage or if emergencies arise, we have great neighbors and friends nearby who's numbers we will leave for you.

Our home is very child and family friendly--we have hosted families with children from infants to teens and all have found our home to be quite satisfactory. Teens often enjoy our PS3 and accompanying Band Hero games--younger children enjoy the garden and grass in the summer months

It's also very safe with a security gate in front. We have a trundle bed under twin day bed in 2nd bedroom --trundle pulls up (with some effort!) to regular height bed. We also have a tri-fold futon available in case you need occasional extra sleeping space.

Feel free to ask about and for whatever you feel you may need during your stay--if we can make it happen, we will!

My daughter, Chayla, is experienced filling in for me as manager when I'm traveling so you will most likely be in touch with her as well when you need anything from us during your stay.

Getting Around

Molly Stone's Market is just 5 min walk down Park Ave to California Avenue. There are several good cafes and Starbucks on Cal Ave as well as many great restaurants. The Cuban place, La Bodegita (sp?) is really good, especially if you like mojitos! Terun has good southern Italian food but don't go there Thurs thru Sat unless you enjoy a crowd! They are classic, loud, loving, friendly Calabreses! One of the best coffee drinks in Paly can be bot at Zombie runner in the back of the store! Mediterranean Wraps is one of our favorite go-to's on rushed weeknights--they are very friendly and serve up fast, traditional middle eastern food (falafel, tabuleh, hummus, etc) We are just 3 blocks or less from California Ave CalTrain Station (train service to 1 block from El Camino Real--VTA bus svc including express buses to Stanford, etc. .2 miles (a few very short blocks) to Calif Ave shopping district and the Sunday Organic Farmer's Market.

House Rules

STRICTLY NON-SMOKING PROPERTY--INCLUDING YARD, ETC. NO SMOKERS, PLEASE. (I am asthmatic and allergic to smoke, etc.)

Check in time: 4:00 p.m.

Check out time: Noon

Please know that these are not so much "rules" as our hopes of what we can count on our guests to do for us in exchange for what we feel is a reasonable price for our absolutely lovely home! 2 CATS (Luna and Pepper): We are cat lovers and we ask that you "accommodate" and provide some minimal care and attention to our two cats while you are here. So if you're anything like my mother who has a cat PHOBIA (or allergies!)...please, do all concerned a favor, and find another listing! This place IS FOR YOU if you love animals and are willing to do just a little to ensure these selfless beings' happiness while you stay in their house.

1) Luna is the multi-color, very particular, female cat and Pepper is the older male, gorgeous black cat (who LOVES him some Luna!). Both must be let in at night (hint: if they're hungry, they'll come in at night at the sound of food so wait til you're in for the night to do their evening feeding) If they stay outside after you go to bed, you or the neighbors are likely to hear screaming or meowing in the middle of the night as there is a grey cat (Tiki) who likes to mess with Luna. :)
2) 1/4 cup food in their 2 bowls twice daily, 2) fresh water in the bowl 1x daily,
3) scoop their poop out regularly with shovel attached to litter box system, shake off most of the white litter pellets and flush down toilet (it's easy and not messy because they eat primo cat food--Science Diet.
4) pet them as often as you can--life gets busy and they understand that but they'll let you know they're lonely, that's FOR SURE.
5) change the pad in the litter box system drawer 1x every 4 days (unless it doesn't appear too wet). If you stay 12 nights, then, 4) dump pellets into bag 1x weekly and throw away in dumpster behind condo complex in carport area). Pour new bag of pellets into litter box. (ALL EXTRA CAT FOOD AND LITTER SUPPLIES ARE IN PLASTIC TRUNK ON DECK BEHIND CERAMIC TABLE)

Please be gentle with everything in the house. It is a very small, old home and therefore many parts are easily broken or ruined--for example the delicate glass bedroom doorknobs and the doors themselves which don't always close easily but with patience will close just fine.

Kitchen: 1) Feel free to use laundry--soap under sink. One set of sheets is max it will clean at one time. SMALL LOADS ONLY--fill washer only 1/2 full of clothes as a gen rule. We use white metal drying rack (outside back kitchen door to dry most things as dryer is very small). 2) COUNTER TOPS AND SINK: DO NOT pour hot water directly from stove pots into sink--it will. STAIN. Instead, run cold water while you drain stove water into sink. Sink and counter tops are soap stone which is porous and will absorb most oils, etc. so please wipe up spills as they happen rather than waiting.

Help yourself to food and drink we may leave--pantry is well-stocked.

Dining Room: To shut French doors in dining room, you must shut them gently and tug firmly upward on the left and THEN the right in order to close and lock them. If you try pulling them hard to shut them, the handle will fall off (of the right door) and then you're left to deal with the allen wrench to tighten it back on (allen wrench is in tea cup on the wall to your right) which is a total pain. Please do not use items other than salt and pepper mills in the white curio cabinet in dining room as they all have sentimental value for me--you can use all other serving and eating implements you find throughout the kitchen.

Gardeners come 1x weekly on Tuesdays--be sure garden gate is unlocked (preferably, open) if you are out and let them in if you're here. They have to be able to come as I pay them by the month.

Fountains are OFF to conserve water during drought.

Sprinklers are on auto--please leave the settings as is so the plants remain happy and healthy. Gardeners will adjust them to new drought schedule 6/17/15.

One car may be parked in spot in the front driveway -- in the drive way closest to our gate entrance (the larger, 2-car driveway on left as you face the house--the small driveway to right belongs to one of the other tenants so we can't use that one).

We play DVDs and rent Netflix and Hulu (secretpass --that's the password for both) movies through our PS3 so you have to use 2 remotes to watch movies--one for the PS3 and one for the Sony TV.
