The Space

The Forest Retreat is in a great location. The house is surrounded by forest and has the feel of the country but it is 5 minutes from downtown Austin and the hip SOCO district and 20 minutes from the airport. It was built by master furniture maker Wolf Sitter, (website hidden) and designed by his artist/photographer wife, Charlotte Bell,.(website hidden). The house is full of special touches that they have added. Pecan kitchen cupboards and photographs from around the world are a few of the additions.
The bedroom has a queen bed, sky light and windows looking out into the trees.
The bath has glass and ceramic tile in the tub and shower.
A covered patio has table chairs and a grill.
This is a casual house that puts people at ease the moment they enter.

  • I stayed in one of the Casa Caracol apartments for a month. It was great, and I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. The building is on the side of a mountain and the apartments (the one I was in, at least), had great views of the town below.

It's about a 15-20 minute walk to the town center (which is uphill on the way back, of course). It might get tiring if you're doing it multiple times a day, but it's not a big deal if you're doing it once.

The apartment itself was clean and beautiful. A maid comes once a week to clean, and it's recommended that you tip (I tipped between 75-100 pesos/week). Someone else comes and offers to do your laundry once a week, and that was also 100 pesos/week (she got the laundry back to me 2 days after I gave it to her each time). There are some laundry places in town that might be cheaper but this was nice and convenient.

People in the neighboring houses and buildings sometimes played loud music, but this is Mexico and that's kind of par for the course. You'll get that wherever you are.

Overall, I loved it. As I said, it was a great place to stay and I'd definitely stay there again. Thanks Charlotte.

  • Charlotte's Casa Caracol was a fantastic surprise. Walking in the door, I felt at home. The first floor studio has a great view, a cozy, comfortable bed, and nice furnishing/decoration. It was impeccably clean. I would undoubtedly stay here again in the future. Plus, it was close enough to town that I could take a long walk through San Miguel's winding streets or grab a taxi. My only recommendation is to bring some earplugs as sound transfers easily within the house and from the streets. Also, Charlotte as a host was very informative, giving plenty of instructions on how to operate the house properly.
