Rita and the Colonel are charming, lovely people with big hearts and a lot of knowledge on Agra. They have a large comfortable home with some outdoor space, and the guest rooms are well sized with big bathrooms. We were fed with amazing home cooked food until we burst! They are located within a military area and use a regular auto-rickshaw driver to travel between home and the sites in town. Colonel Sharma's home stay is a genuine experience of life in an Indian home, where the home is very much the centre of life; some more independent travellers not used to this lifestyle may find this a little overbearing. In all, a great experience, thanks to Rita and the Colonel!
If you ever pass by Agra - there is only one real advice:
Book Rita's & the Colonel's Homestay!
You will experience sincere hospitality, enjoy excellent Indian cuisine, culture and authenticity
and leave Agra with a big smile on your face and two, if not three, new friends in your heart - at least this is what happened to Moritz and me!
Agra can feel a tourist hell hole, but the Sharmas made our stay really warm and special and looked after us like their own children. This isn't a stay for those not interested in interacting with your hosts and, trust me, your time will be so much richer for it. The Sharmas have very interesting stories to share and do their best to help you make the most of your stay in Agra (for us hailing the right tuk tuk and even taking down the number of our driver for the next day). Also, don't miss the meals!!! I'm of Indian origin and pretty fussy about the Indian food I eat. Mrs. Sharma's cooking is amazing! The meals are not just a good value, but are really delicious and lovingly home-cooked; just what you need after too many restaurants. Thank you!
It is hard to describe how privileged I felt to be a guest of colonel Sharma and Rita. Even if it was only for 1 day. They made me feel at home as soon as I arrived and it was hard to leave the next day. Visiting the Taj Mahal was amazing, but to experience the real beauty of India stay with the colonel and Rita.
Rita and the Colonel were absolutely fantastic!! Right from the start we felt at home. The food was amazing and the hospitality was mind blowing. If you're looking for a great place to stay when in Agra, you have found it! Rita and the colonel are the best! Say hi for us and maybe you can bring some school materials (e.g. pens, books, etc) to help Rita with the school she's trying to set up for young kids in Agra.
Colonel Sharma and Rita did everything possible to make us feel welcome. Colonel Sharma picked us up at the train station late at night and helped us organizing our trips during the next days. He got us a driver and helped us plan our itinerary making sure we saw the most beautiful sights at the right time of day. Rita spoiled us with her cooking (we loved her Indian breakfast). Our long conversations in the evenings helped us to understand India a little better and were most enjoyable. Thank you so much.
Rita and The Colonel welcomed us warmly into their lovely home. We have been in India two weeks now, and it remains the best we have been fed - although perhaps too much! Make sure to eat slowly or they will stuff you like a pinata.
The room and house were very tidy, and it is a pleasant respite from the general mayhem that is Agra. They are also a valuable resource for getting you to the sights - as they are a few kms from the Taj/Fort etc, take their advice and let them arrange your auto-rickshaw etc.
Lastly, a word of advice on arriving there. Try to take the train, and they will arrange for pick up at the station, which is not too far from their house. We made the mistake of taking a car from Delhi Airport, and our driver, unfamiliar with Agra, needed about 2 hours to navigate the last 5 kilometers.
We had a fantastic time staying with Rita and Sharma. Their hospitality was wonderful and we had a great time chatting with them over meals and tea. They went out of their way to help us around Agra and gave us recommendations for great places to visit!
Their home is away from the craziness of the city, so it was nice to unwind in a quiet area, with AC and a cup of tea. I would highly recommend them and I hope all their visitors have as much fun as we did!
We (a father and two adult daughters) had a wonderful stay on 8/27 with the Sharmas.
Prior to our visit, we had great email communication with Rita before our visit which helped us plan our travel from Delhi (by train) and to Jaipur (by car which they arranged). They also helped us plan our visit, including a dawn visit to the Taj.
Our stay was wonderful. The only problem was that we did not have enough time. We arrived at 6 pm and Col. Sharma met us at the station. We had arranged in advance to dine with the Sharmas, which we highly recommend, so he took us shopping to pick up some produce and desserts. Seeing the Agra markets was a neat introduction to Agra. Shopping with the Col. was a great experience. We then went to their house and had dinner. Rita is a wonderful cook, and the eggplant she made was to die for. There was more food than we could possibly eat, especially desserts, and it was all delicious and well prepared. We had wonderful conversation. They both had wonderful careers, which were great to learn about, and are knowledgeable and interested in a great number of things, so we had lovely and educational conversations about a wide range of topics.
They have a separate room in the front of the house for guests to sleep in which is large, well furnished, and air conditioned, and has its own bathroom with all the standard amenities. The main bed was comfortable and large. They also supplied an extra bed, since there were three of us, which was also comfortable. Their house is in a quiet and safe neighborhood and has a lovely garden, with a friendly dog,
We woke up early to see sunrise over the Taj,and they were up with us, supplying tea. When we returned several hours later, after seeing the Taj and fort, we had a wonderful breakfast and then, all too soon, had to leave for Jaipur. .
We saw Fatehpur Sikri on the way to Jaipur which I highly recommend. It is 25 miles away from Agra and could easily be seen in a half-day trip from Agra as well. If we had had more time, we would have enjoyed a full day in Agra, being less rushed with the Sharmas, and seeing some of the craftsman and shops that Agra is known for. It was really a shame not to be able to spend more time with them. Their hospitality and generosity was amazing.
