We have one very spacious room available to share in our home in Seaside, near Monterey, CA. Our goal is to provide a welcoming and positive experience for our guests while we encourage sustainable living and community involvement.
We have one very spacious room available to share in our home in Seaside, near Monterey, CA. Our goal is the golden rule: To treat others as we wish to be treated. We aim to provide a welcoming and positive experience for our guests while we encourage sustainable living and community involvement as only the sharing economy can do!
We donate 5% (or more!) of our total Airbnb-generated income to local community and environment non-profit organizations, so we deeply appreciate your choice to stay with us for the greater contribution it makes to our community.
We are conservation minded: We compost, recycle diligently, and also spend a great deal of time in our garden. We try to keep our water use low (because California is almost always in a drought) and tend to be conservative with energy as well. We also value comfort and trust that you will feel at-ease during your visit.
... is the second bedroom, adjacent to the master bedroom (where we stay). It is quite large and there is plenty of space to stretch out and do a yoga routine. We have a queen size air mattress that fits in there easily if separate sleep space is required, but please let us know ahead of time if you'll need it. The guest bathroom is not attached, but it is reserved for your exclusive use. It features a walk-in shower (no tub) and is located a few feet from the bedroom door, off the hall.
... is a basic 60's ranch-style house that has been updated inside and reflects our eclectic personalities. The walls are painted in pastel and bright colors, each room different. There are plants throughout the house and the unifying theme of our decor is something that may only exist in our imaginations. It is a clean but not sterile home where we feel quite comfortable, and hope you will as well. We hope you will feel free to use all the shared space of the house and garden during your stay.
Inside our home:
There is basic wireless internet. We do not have cable, but there is a television with a DVD player available in the living room to watch movies, if you like. We keep plenty of books and magazines, and have a few board and card games available to enjoy. There is a whole-house water filter/softener, for luxurious slippery hot-spring style showers. There is also a reverse-osmosis drinking water filter in the kitchen for fresh delicious water any time. (Including to make coffee and tea, to which you are welcome as a guest.)
We keep a decent stock of household items, so if you forget your shampoo or toothbrush (etc.), not to worry, we can help.
(and how it fits in the grand scheme of things):
... is relatively quiet, except for the morning calls of birds and the distant rush of waves on the shores of the Fort Ord Dunes beaches. There is little traffic on our street due to the many one-way and dead-end streets in the neighborhood. You will sometimes hear distant traffic on Hwy 1, and also occasional airplanes, but it is actually a very peaceful setting for being in the middle of town. While there are buses that come nearby our house which ultimately run all over Monterey County, it is not the most accessible area by public transit, so this is a better area for travelers with a vehicle. That said, there are always options. If you are arriving at the local airport, it is not far and we might be able to arrange to meet you there, so please do ask. The Monterey bicycle trail is downhill just a couple miles. This is a residential neighborhood and there are few tourist amenities in the immediate (walkable) area.
We are in Seaside, which is the town directly North of Monterey - really the two are continuous. Downtown Seaside does have a few tasty restaurants that we will be happy to recommend, as well as a fantastic yoga studio, but otherwise many of the destinations in our area are a short drive away from our doorstep.
We are 2.3 miles from the Monterey Fairgrounds where wonderful events sometimes happen. It is about 4 miles to downtown Monterey, takes maybe 10 minutes to get through town over there and to Cannery Row and Fisherman's Wharf, etc. It is about 8 miles to downtown Carmel... which takes maybe 20 minutes. South of Carmel, the highway runs along the open coastline and a little through the forests and is lovely all the way to Big Sur, which is actually a poorly defined vast area, but the town of Big Sur is probably an hour down that way. We are about 7 miles from the entrance to Laguna Seca (15 minutes), or about 4 minutes to drive to the Embassy Suites where the regular shuttle bus originates for Laguna Seca. Salinas (and the John Steinbeck Center) is about a 25-minute drive from our doorstep. On the other side, Santa Cruz is North about 45 minutes to an hour (depending on where you want to go near there). Basically, it doesn't take terribly long to drive anywhere around here and get to exceptional nature or great events.
What you need to know:
This is our full-time home and we will probably be home during your visit. Although it is a shared house, your room is your private sanctuary and we are equally happy to respect your preference for 'personal time' as well as to share space and socialize in the common areas of the house and garden. The kitchen is available for you to use if you would like to prepare your own meals. On weekends, we'll be glad to have you join us for a homemade breakfast if it fits in the schedule. Let us know!
There are three adult cats in our home, and four chickens in the garden, making this a poor location for those with allergies or aversions. Also, we cannot accept pets traveling with their folks. (Sorry!)
We love to share our home and garden with our friends, and hope that you will enjoy them as well!
Entire home, including your private room and bath (located off the hall, not attached to room), living room, kitchen, laundry and garden!
Interaction with Guests
This is up to the guest's preference. We are quite busy but, whenever home, we love to have a good visit with our guests if they are open to the interaction. You are more than welcome to keep to yourself, too.
Our specific block is very quiet with little traffic and friendly neighbors who will wave and greet you as you come and go. It is a sleepy spot without much to explore in the near vicinity, but a short drive to ll that Monterey and the area has to offer. A perfect place to relax and have a good rest!
Easiest to have a car, but if you are a usual cyclist, you can get around the Peninsula relatively easily.
Other Things to Note
Kitties! Chickens! Flowers! There is a lot of life at our home...
Please take care to turn off and unplug small appliances, lights and faucets when you are finished using them. It is a small measure toward conservation of resources! Also, please be sure that the front and back doors are locked when you leave the house.
You will be welcome to use the kitchen, but please clean up what you have used after your meal. We will provide breakfast items (and sometimes on weekends will be glad to prepare breakfast to share), but otherwise meals will be on your own.
No smoking allowed.
There is a beehive, in addition to three cats and four chickens, on our property. Please consider this if you have severe allergies.
From Aug 5 - 10, 2015 the minimum stay is 3 nights.
Very nice and clean place, friendly host and quiet neighborhood only a short drive to Monterrey and Carmel
L & Y are a lovely couple and they have done an amazing job of creating a beautiful artistically decorated space and garden in a very simple home/ yard. We very much enjoyed the time spent there, privacy, delicious banana bread etc.. and reasonable cost.we may indeed return someday.
Laura and Yasu was so nice and friendly. Their house was lovely and cozy, very nice place! Thank you so much!
Laura and Yasu were wonderful hosts. They have a great home with beautiful gardens. When we left We told them we admired their home and lifestyle. We would stay there again in a heartbeat.
Laura and Yasu were very welcoming, as was Rococo (one of their kitties). The room is large, and the private bathroom well appointed and clean. Our hosts exemplified sustainable living and how to prevent unnecessary waste of our natural resources!
They had fresh coffee prepped for us each morning and made us feel at ease in their lovely home. Thank you for hosting us!
Laura and Yasu were very pleasant throughout the entire airbnb process. From booking the place and arranging a check in time, to our arrival, they ensured a comfortable stay. The room was clean and spacious with access to the private guest bath conveniently down the hall. Their cats were mild mannered and their chickens provided us with some fresh eggs for breakfast! Laura greeted us at the door to show us around and gave us some excellent tips on nearby hiking trails. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay!
Laura's and Yasu's accommodations are lovely! And exactly as described. The guest room is large and super clean ... also bright and airy with a comfortable mattress. The bathroom is spotless. Their European-style flash water heater gets shower water hot in an instant. We had flawless sleep for the week we stayed -- and the hosts are respectful of privacy in the shared space. In the morning, the bonus was having the company of their sweet cats, along with mugs of the potent coffee Yasu left for us! :-) We used this Seaside location as a jumping off point for a week's worth of exploration around the Monterey Peninsula. By car, it's convenient to everything in Monterey and Pacific Grove, and is just a short drive north to nature areas like Elkhorn Slough on Highway 1. Our week in Seaside stands out as one of our best in recent memories! :-)
About the Host, Laura + Yasu
We are a mellow but fun-loving, friendly couple in our 30's. Travel and hosting are both wonderful ways that we experience the world and other people, and we're grateful for the opportunity to do both! We enjoy visiting with our hosts and folks we meet when traveling, but are also well self-entertained, taking in all the new sensations that come along with a journey. We like to go to house concerts and small local venues for live music. We look for things like that, as well as other small local events, when we travel, and we'll be glad to connect guests with any such opportunities when we host.
As for hosting, we enjoy socializing and getting to know our guests when it fits in with everyone's schedule and needs. We are also happy to provide a quiet, private setting where our guests can feel perfectly comfortable while on vacation. We enjoy having friends (including those we haven't met until now) in our home and hosting has been great for that! Whatever your traveling style or needs, we are flexible and enjoy the adventure. We really are blessed to live in this beautiful place and it is wonderful to share our love for it, including our passion for protecting the environment and fostering community, with visitors who are looking for something much better than a hotel experience.
For work, Laura does agricultural research in the famous Salinas Valley and Yasu teaches Japanese at the Defense Language Institute.
