We offer over 2200 spacious square feet of sensible, practical family living space in an attractive home right in the heart of James Bay and less than a block from the myriad attractions of Fisherman's Wharf. Our two-level turn-of-the century Edwardian home is situated on a quiet residential street with AMPLE free on-street parking. Guests are also welcome to use the private driveway which can accommodate two vehicles.
From the house It is a ten minute walk to downtown, Washington State ferries, the inner harbour, beaches, Provincial Museum, Emily Carr House, and the Robert Bateman Gallery. Beacon Hill Park (the "Central Park" of Vancouver Island) and the nearby dedicated "Doggy Park" are a further 12 minute walk along a lovely seaside path, while James Bay VIllage Center, with its coffee shops, pubs, bookstores, 24 hour grocery and more, is three blocks up the road. There is a city bus stop about 50 meters away and a Doggy Day Care at the end of the street.
Aside from its privileged location, the heritage home boasts: oak floors, a wood-burning fireplace (for winter guests), recently-upgraded full kitchen with standard cooking facilities, two full bathrooms, five bedrooms and a large upstairs alternate living room/library/den which serves as a children's room/extra bedroom. Each bedroom has a comfy queen-sized bed, and we also have an extra foldout double mattress. Full laundry facilities are offered and there is a propane barbeque on hand.. An off-kitchen deck provides morning and afternoon sun, and looks over the rear lawn area. We welcome well-behaved pets and have a reasonable selection of age-appropriate toys, books and movies for children. Youngsters are also welcome to use our trampoline. We have a flat screen tv with dvd's and high speed wired and wireless internet is provided free of charge.
Our guest home is tailor-made for two families or couples traveling together or a family with in-laws. We have hosted up to 14 guests, but the house seems ideally suited for 6-10 people. The upstairs area is very private and removed from the main living area, has its own full bathroom, two bedrooms, and a lounge/library area.
Weddings are also popular at the heritage home; we have hosted five wedding parties over the last two years. Wedding planners have the option to book the loft next door as well as the chalet around back for additional guests (see our other two listings).
Michael and Yuki (the hosts) live next door. We have a 10 year old who loves to welcome new friends, share his toys, and bounce on the trampoline with our guests. We also have a friendly twenty two year old son (currently studying at the University of Victoria) onsite who will help fix your car if it breaks down. He can converse adequately in Russian and German, Yuki speaks Japanese, and I get by in Spanish.
Please note: After each group, we pay a cleaning crew to come in and prepare the house for the next guests. A very small portion of the cleaning bill is passed on to guests, so we do ask that guests leave the heritage home tidy, and throw the first load of bed linens in the washing machine before leaving.
Guests have full use of the house during their stay. There are no "off-limits" areas (other than the basement storage area); the heritage house is truly your HOME during your stay. We ask that you refrain from parking in the driveway though as it blocks access to the back and is very narrow. You may, however, use the driveway for loading and unloading. There is no charge for on-street parking, despite what the twenty year old signs say.
Interaction with guests
We live in the house next door and love to interact with guests, especially when it comes to our passion... travel. However, we also understand that guests are not coming to Victoria specifically to visit US, so we make ourselves as available as our guests wish us to be.
Non-smoking home. PLEASE, no smoking on the property! We welcome pets but ask their owners not to allow them on the beds or furniture. We also remove area rugs prior to the arrival of guests with pets. Shoes should be removed at the front door and the grate always placed in front of the wood-burning fireplace. Please do not block in the narrowest part of the driveway as that is our path to the back of the house. Fun is compulsory!!
