We offer over 2200 spacious feet of sumptuous living space right in the heart of James Bay and less than a block from the myriad attractions of Fisherman's Wharf. Our capacious turn-of-the century Edwardian home is situated on a quiet residential street. It is a ten minute walk to downtown, Washington State ferries, the inner harbour, beaches, Provincial Museum, Emily Carr House, and the Robert Bateman Gallery. Beacon Hill Park (the "Central Park" of Vancouver Island) and the nearby dedicated "Doggy Park" are a further 12 minute walk along a lovely seaside path, while historic James Bay VIllage Center, with its coffee shops, pubs, bookstores, 24 hour grocery and more, is three blocks up the road. There is a city bus stop about 50 meters away and a Doggy Day Care at the end of the street.
Aside from its privileged location, the heritage home boasts: oak floors, a wood-burning fireplace, (wood included!), newly-remodeled, fully-appointed kitchen with complete cooking facilities, two full bathrooms, five full bedrooms and a large upstairs alternate living room/library/den which serves as a fifth bedroom or children's room. Each bedroom has a comfy queen-sized bed, and we also have an extra foldout double mattress. Full laundry facilities are offered and there is a propane barbeque on hand.. An off-kitchen deck provides morning and afternoon sun, and looks over the private rear lawn area. On-site parking allows forfor up to three vehicles in the driveway, as well as on-street parking. We welcome well-behaved pets and have a reasonable selection of age-appropriate toys, books and movies for children. Cable flat screen tv and high speed wired and wireless internet is provided free of charge.
Our guest home is tailor-made for two families or couples traveling together or a family with in-laws. We have hosted up to 14 guests, but the house seems ideally suited for 6-10 people. The upstairs area is very private and removed from the main living area, has its own full bathroom, two bedrooms, and a lounge/library area.
Weddings are also popular at the heritage home; we have hosted five nuptial groups over the last two years. Wedding planners have the option to book the loft next door as well as the chalet around back for additional guests (see our other listings).
Michael and Yuki (the hosts) live next door. We have a 7.5 year old who loves to welcome new friends, share his toys, and bounce on his trampoline with our guests. We also have a friendly nineteen year old (just back from his round the world trip) who will help fix your car if it breaks down. He can converse adequately in Russian and German, Yuki speaks Japanese, and I get by in Spanish.
Please note: unlike many airbnb suites, we do not charge a cleaning fee. However, we do ask that guests leave the heritage home tidy, and throw the first load of bed linens in the washing machine before leaving.
Guests have full use of the house, driveway and lawn area during their stay. There are no "off-limits" areas (other than the basement storage area); the heritage house is truly your HOME during your stay.
Interaction with Guests
We live in the house next door and love to interact with guests, especially when it comes to our passion... travel. However, we also understand that guests are not coming to Victoria specifically to visit US, so we make ourselves as available as our guests wish us to be.
We have lived in the James Bay area for fifteen years, and in that time we have seen the neighborhood transformed and become gentrified---no surprise given its proximity to the inner harbor, downtown and the cliffs of Dallas Road. However, despite its newfound sophistication, James Bay is still a neighborhood of contrasts, with struggling students in tiny suites next door to 1.5 million dollar homes. This phenomenon shows itself in clear detail when shopping, sipping coffee or people-watching in James Bay Square.
Geographically, the city of Victoria is bounded on three sides by water. As a result, it is a compact city and easy to negotiate one's way on foot. The public transit system is adequate, but car rentals are cheap, and for the in between journey we have free mountain bikes for your use.
Non-smoking home. PLEASE, no smoking on the property! We welcome pets but ask their owners not to allow them on the beds or furniture. We also remove area rugs prior to the arrival of guests with pets. Shoes should be removed at the front door and the grate always placed in front of the wood-burning fireplace. Fun is compulsory!!
Very nice place, in good position. House needs some improvement, kitchenequipment was a Little bit poor.
Michael welcomed us on arrival and the house was clean with everything that we needed. They was good laundry facilities and the shops and downtown were within distance. We had a choice of 5 bedrooms, 4 being quite spacious.
This was a large enough house to fit our entire group. The neighborhood is quiet and a mixture of houses and multi-family dwellings. The house is attractive from the street and also well appointed inside. The closeness to Fisherman's Wharf was a plus, but it was just slightly too far from the inner harbour for our aging group. It would be a great place for younger, fitter people to stay.
I spent a week in the lovely Heritage Home at Fisherman's Wharf. The owner, Michael, was very helpful and informative about the area, grocery store, where to eat, etc. We had complete privacy during our stay there, yet friendly assistance when needed. Being able to have a home to be in with my family for wedding prep was wonderful. Warm and homey is how the place felt to us all. Plenty of bed space for us all and the kitchen was basically filled with cooking and coffee drinking the whole time. I recommend this place to anyone wanting to explore Victoria on foot. This area is full of beauty and friendly people. Thanks to Airbnb and Michael for helping us to enjoy our time.
