Nestled in a narrow valley in Litchfield County, this charming guest cottage is located on a stunning 275 acre estate at the end of a mile long private drive. With its own private pool and hot tub nestled within stone walls, it is perfect for couples looking for a romantic retreat, or individuals looking to rest and regroup from too much work. It is a 2+ miles to the village of Cornwall, and a 25 minute drive to Litchfield, Kent, Sharon, and Falls Village.

The space
Step back in time, as you drive through the gates of the estate, down the long and winding pebbled private road. Past the stream, past the 100 year old gate house, past the waterfalls and ponds …. Finally, you approach the main house and its guest cottage. Located approximately 150 feet from the main house, behind a walled garden, the guest cottage enjoys a private pool (unheated) and a heated spa for the personal use of our Cottage guests.

The guest cottage was originally built as an artist studio, and then expanded to include a small kitchen, bathroom, closet and bedroom, with a working fireplace. It is the perfect space for a romantic weekend away. The pool and hot tub are open from mid-May until the end of October.

Small and charming, the village of Cornwall has a library, public tennis courts, a farm stand with seasonal produce, and Coltsfoot Valley Farm, which sells fresh milk and cheese. Our local cheesemaker, Tommy Eucalitto, also offers cheese making courses for groups from May 1 through the Fall, which can be booked from the farm's website. The nearest market is Cornwall Market in Cornwall Bridge, a bit less than 15 minutes away.

The hills of Litchfield County are bucolic, dotted with picturesque farms and numerous opportunities for hiking. Mohawk Mountain State Forest is 3 miles away and the Appalachian Trail Head is 6 miles away. The quintessentially New England town of Litchfield was named a 2025 Top Destination by Conde Nast and featured in the New York Times 36 Hours series. Filled with chic shops, galleries, wineries and farm-to-table restaurants, the Litchfield Hills have a quiet sophistication, grounded in an appreciation of nature, and a respect for privacy.

Guest access
Guests are welcome to explore the estate and to hike the hills around the property, but do so at their own risk, realizing that the estate abuts a large nature preserve that is home to ticks, wild geese, ducks, porcupines, deer, turkeys, foxes, and bears. Additionally, the property has a significant number of streams, waterfalls, and ponds, which can be dangerous for anyone who is not a proficient swimmer. For anyone planning on exploring, we highly recommend bringing hiking shoes that you don't mind getting muddy.

Access to the property is limited to our Airbnb guests who are spending the night on the property and does not include access to the property by individuals who are not our Airbnb guests. Please message us before you book your stay, if you have questions.

Other things to note
Please note that The Cottage was originally designed as an artist retreat and does not have a TV, though it has excellent wifi.

Cornwall, with only 1,600 residents across 46 square miles, has very spotty cell reception, so this really is your chance to unplug and relax. While you will be able to receive emails and calls when you are inside The Cottage and on wifi, once you step outside, your phone will not be able to get a cell signal.

The Cottage is one of three guest houses on the property available on Airbnb. The estate is a wonderful place to hold small family reunions or gatherings of up to 15 people, as different meals can be hosted in the different houses and all the guests have use of the pool and hot tub during their stay. The Lodge sleeps 5 people and the Gate House sleeps 8 people.

Additional fees apply for any events (including photoshoots) you may wish to hold during your stay on the estate that involve any people who are not Airbnb guests staying on the property.

Neighborhood highlights

We like to call it rural … but not remote. We are a 2 mile walk into Cornwall Village, where you can find the local library and the farmer’s market on Saturday. The town of Litchfield is a 25 minute drive, as are Kent and Sharon.
