Thanks to our very private location, our villa is one of the safest locations in our area, and we never had any burglary since we bought the villa early 1999.

I can see how this is the kind of place that will be perfect for some guests (people who want lots of hang-out space and a pool), and a disappointment for others (people who expect to spend a significant amount of time in their room). My sister and I brought our families for a week to the downstairs rooms at Jungle Villa (four adults, three children ages 3-8) and found the upstairs common areas ideal: imagine a huge open air room with about six different sitting areas so people can still get away from each other but all be together, a great open kitchen (we cooked 90% of the time), green all around, monkeys that visit daily, pools (yes, sometimes they do get cloudy after big rain storms, but we saw them cleaned often so we didn't feel like they were dirty, it was more like pollen and newly fallen leaves, not algae or anything gross). We spent at least three hours a day in there, the upper pools are small and cooler, the big pool is quite warm - something for everyone. With three little kids we didn't want to be cooped up in our rooms, so the fact that there isn't a lot of cross ventilation and it's not a five star hotel didn't bother us (AC and fans worked great for cooling off at night). Surprisingly few bugs in the rooms, given my experience in Latin America. Windows were screened. Ad and staff were friendly and helpful (they are always around, as were other occasional guests staying upstairs, so this had more of a two-room hotel feel than a private home) and we appreciated getting to practice our Spanish with them. Location is GREAT- don't bring a car, you can bus it to Quepos, beach, park (it's all one big road that starts in quepos and ends at beach/Manuel Antonio park, so it's not like you'll get lost), many excellent restaurants within walking distance. Considerations for choosing upstairs/downstairs: downstairs is away from everyone so always quiet, even if people in pool, upstairs probably a little noisier since off common areas, but has more cross-ventilation and might be nice if you expect to spend a lot of time in your room - although at this place, I can't think why you'd want to be anywhere but in one of those rocking chairs or on the comfy couch, or playing cards overlooking the ocean, or in the pool. And yes, you can jump off that big ledge you see in the pictures right into the pool. It's awesome!
The jungle villa was an exceptional place! Every day at dawn and dusk the monkeys would come down from the trees to visit the villa. You really can’t beat that kind of experience! It is nestled in the trees and has a very relaxed feel; although not a 5-star hotel, it is a true Costa Rican experience.
Although oddly situated, the rooms were very comfy and provided everything you need. We had 5 in our group and took the entire bottom floor of the villa. Be prepared to possibly share the basic accommodations with others (kitchen, pool, lounging area, etc.) as there is an additional accommodation on the top floor. The two different sets of guests that took this part of the villa were extremely friendly and the perfect people to have shared the common space with.
Ad was a pleasant host, very accommodating and informative about the area. If ever in Manuel Antonio again we will definitely be staying here. Thanks for the experience Ad.
Ad did everything that he could to make us feel welcome at the Jungle Villa with constant communication and follow up to make sure that all of our needs were met.
The area around the Jungle Villa is great, it has close access to the bus directly to the Manuel Antonio beach.
The patio is also a very cool hangout location to sit and listen to the sounds of the rain forest.
The Jungle Villa is absolutely beautiful! If you want to feel like your on vacation or you need an escape, this is definitely the place to go to. The location is also perfect which shops and restaurants all being at a walking distance. The rooms are nice and spacious and there's always someone working at the villa incase you need anything. There are overnight securities at the villa and also on the street where the villa is located so safety is not an issue.
Pleasant stay. Rooms are simple and most don't have doors so count on it. Shared kitchen in the outside common area has everything needed to make food and eat with plenty of space. Bottom pool is pleasantly deep actually and they keep it clean. The upper two pools were bit as clean and had quite a few leaves in them. Great value for money especially if you stay as a large group but pretty basic. A/c you can be run only at night so don't plan to stay inside during the day - either by the pool, or in the shaded common area or go somewhere - park and beach nearby are great.
Alex, thank you very much for your review. Our pools are cleaned twice a day and leaves keep falling 24/7 from the huge tropical trees just 3 feet from our pools. That's part of staying so close to the real jungle. All bedrooms are in the shade of the trees surrounding the villa and this keeps our rooms pleasantly cool without the use of air-conditioning. That's why 60% of our guests never use the air-conditioning !! I hope you had a nice stay in Costa Rica.
I like to leave positive and honest reviews, so I'll start with the positive and honest:
* only 3 km to Manuel Antonio National Park
* unique, spacious, open-air lobby with lots of space to hang out
* open kitchen in the lobby is great for social cooking
* large, multi-level pool area
* secluded, but easy access to restaurants and attractions
* nice view of the ocean through the jungle
* the long chain of connected rooms in the basement could accommodate a large group of friends together
And now for the just honest part:
* The glass shower had a large triangular hole with exposed broken glass; when I told Ad, he said, "but it has plastic on it," which it didn't. He never did anything to fix or cover the jagged glass.
* One of our toilets wouldn't flush; when I mentioned this, Ad said, "toilets always need to be adjusted." I said the broken chain needed repair. He said "but it was fixed 4 months ago." He finally said he'd have it fixed. When we returned after our day's activities, Ad claimed he didn't know about it (or the glass). Then he claimed he couldn't have it fixed because we had taken the key. Only one key? And in fact, our son had been in the room the entire afternoon, so all he had to do was knock.
* Our musty basement rooms had no cross ventilation, so AC was the only way to get fresh air. As advertised, he charged us $10/day extra, then claimed we used it too much. We used it only at night and when my son stayed in to rest - his room had absolutely no windows, making the AC a necessity.
* One of the beds in the basement had metal bars for a base and such a thin, worn foam mattress that you could feel the bars through your back. Ad claimed he'd get another mattress, but did nothing, and then got irate because we stacked a second thin foam mattress from another bed on top to try to make it comfortable.
What we didn't even bother to mention to Ad because he was so unresponsive to our main concerns:
* the towels were thin and worn out, with frayed edges and stains
* the pool water was cloudy and murky – we didn't want to use it
* the musty basement rooms look onto a covered porch used to dry laundry
After all of this, when we returned the key, Ad complained because the small, old plastic tag had broken off (we found it). He was more concerned about that 3 cm tag than the broken glass, toilet, bed, etc.
Ad is leaving Costa Rica and the villa is for sale. Hopefully someone will buy it and turn it back into a restaurant, which is what it was designed for. It'd be an awesome restaurant. For the price, you can definitely find better!
Kirsten and her family are not the type of guests we like to see coming back to the beautiful Jungle Villa.
They stayed with 5 persons (3 adults and 2 teenager boys) in the over sized 1050 square feet Jungle Suite which has 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and 3 toilets.
The first day of their 2-day stay they noticed the staff that 1 toilet was not flushing anymore.
We advised Kirsten to use one of the other 2 toilets till the 3rd toilet was repaired.
Unfortunately they did not leave the only keys at the reception as requested but took the keys all day to the beach.
Which did not give us the opportunity to repair the toilet immediately.
We ask all guests in person and by signs to turn off the lights, fans and air conditioning whenever they go to the beach or on a tour.
But this basic house rule was simply ignored. The air conditioning was running 24/7 !!
Every bathroom has plenty of towels and if there are not enough towels ask any staff member for more towels. The Jungle Villa has 24/7 staff present.
Typical for Kirsten and her family was that whenever 20 or so squirrel monkeys (mono titis) visited the Jungle Villa, they kept playing on their mobile devices.
They hardly noticed the monkeys at all. For all groups who stay in the Jungle Villa any visit by the monkeys is a highlight.
Cameras are pulled and many photos are taken.
After Kirsten returned home from Costa Rica we were informed that our 3 pools were murky, whatever this is.
But other guests who stayed in the villa the same days as Kirsten used the pools several hours a day. They loved our pools.
Musty bedrooms is the summit of this review. The rain forest or jungle starts 10 feet from the villa. Below the villa hundreds of trees produce fresh oxygen which is blown by a soft ocean breeze into the villa's living area and its bedrooms. What else can someone expect in this environment? The jungle has a typical smell but the air in the villa is fresh and a lot more healthy than Los Angeles smog.
If you cannot stand the heat don't come in the kitchen!
Our 4 staff members try to please all Jungle Villa guests as much as possible.
But Kirsten and her family were impossible to please 100%.
Let other hosts try it, or better, don't even try.
Joshua and his party (4 adults, 4 small children) were warned 3 times that walking over the high walls surrounding our three 3-level pools was not allowed.
If a 5-year old boy falls down from this wall, he may be very much hurt. And if something happens everybody has of course forgotten all our earlier warnings.
If a person-to-person explanation of the pool rules doesn't help, a whole row of signs will definitely not help either.
This group consisted of 4 adults and 4 small children (3 - 9 years). The space they rented has 4 double beds plus 1 bunk bed (double + single bed).
Sounds like plenty of space for everyone.
Our photo page include at least 8 correct photos of this 3-bedroom unit.

About the Host, Ad
I bought this beautiful Jungle Villa early 1999. Originally it was built as a restaurant with 3 pools for a nearby hotel. It's was converted into a private residence in 1999. Guests have given the house many different names like Monkey House, Noah's Ark, etc. but we simply call it the Jungle Villa, a villa embedded in the jungle. If you come to Costa Rica for its nature and animals, this villa is your best choice. As hundreds of guests said already: whenever you enter our property gate, you enter a completely different world. A world with a relaxed atmosphere, sounds of the nature, animals and jungle. A world far away from everydays world. Just relax and enjoy it.
