Don't be fooled by its humble exterior! What was once a single car garage built in 1922 is now a modernly styled two-room guest house in our private backyard. A combination of custom and convenience!
The bed is a queen plus-sized comfort sleeper sofa bed with an amazingly supportive mattress. This is no regular sofa bed. Don't take my word for it - see our past guest reviews. The bathroom features a generously-sized shower and includes all linens, some toiletries, and a hair dryer for guest use. We also offer an iron with small ironing board and full-length mirror.
Though not all shown in the pictures, the kitchenette has a microwave, toaster, undercounter refrigerator with freezer compartment, two range burner, a blender, and coffee maker. Dishes, utensils, and cookware also available for your dine-in needs, though you will find a number of restaurants just a few blocks away in the historic Kenton shopping district and several more in nearby Arbor Lodge, Mississippi, and Overlook neighborhoods.
Adjoining the main room through solid french doors is the studio addition. This bright space can function as a sitting room or second bedroom for additional guests. We have a full-size futon and/or travel crib that can be set up upon request. Both rooms have separate entrances opening to a shaded and green backyard. Come summer, you may find a hammock hanging from our walnut tree!
Guests have access to the backyard and weather permitting, our outdoor furniture. We also have a charcoal grill available for use upon request.
Interaction with Guests
We enjoy meeting and getting to know our guests personally, though we generally take a hands-off approach to your stay in the interest of your privacy and ours. Check-in and out is self-serve, and we try to provide you with all the information you'll need for a comfortable stay. Of course, we want to know if there are any problems, concerns, or questions. If you need suggestions or advice, we are always happy to share what we know to make your visit even more enjoyable!
Kenton is a historic neighborhood in the North section of Portland. It's residential while being close to both Downtown and the airport. Kenton has a small commercial district with locally-owned shops and cafes, a couple parks within walking distance, and great proximity to other bigger neighborhoods like Mississippi and Williams Aves.
Traveling with a car? Free and plentiful street parking is available.
Coming from the airport? The easiest way to our part of town is west on Highway 30.
No car? Taxi or shuttle from PDX Airport is quicker than public transportation. See full options on the Port of Portland website.
No car? No worries! Our neighborhood is served by major bus lines and nearby MAX Light Rail Yellow line (~20 mins to downtown). See Trimet's website for options and a handy Trip Planner. We also have several bus and light rail timetables for guest use.
Other Things to Note
We do have a very house friendly cat that roams the outside property though he is not permitted in the studio. Still, if you are highly allergic to cats or pets, please contact me prior to booking to discuss the specifics. We want you to have an enjoyable and comfortable stay!
NO smoking allowed inside the building. Please be considerate when smoking outdoors.
Quiet hours are between 9PM and 8AM. We live in a residential neighborhood and have awesome, understanding neighbors. Please help us keep it so.
We appreciate help to keep our landfill trash down; recycle all glass in the yellow bins; plastic, paper, and cans in the blue bins; all food scraps and pizza boxes in the green composting bins.
Follow the check-out procedures listed on the info sheet to help keep our space tidy and efficient.
The backyard studio was really cute and perfect for us. It was clean and had lots of natural sunlight. Checking in and out was really easy. We met Julia (and her cute baby)—she was pleasant and gave some great recommendations of areas to see in the city. There wasn't a ton of food/things to do in the neighborhood, but it was easy to get to other areas of the city from this location. We really enjoyed our stay!
We very much enjoyed our stay here. The neighborhood was great with a handful of nice coffee shops and restaurants and very close to public transportation. Julia's place was very clean and nicely decorated with plenty of seating (more than is pictured) and a little closet to store clothing. Even though it was very hot in Portland during our visit, the studio stayed very comfortable. Julia was great about answering my questions as they came up and couldn't have been a better host. I would highly recommend this studio to others.
This space was wonderful! It was nice and private, quiet, and very clean. Public transportation was easy to use and there were multiple bus stops nearby. The hosts provided everything needed and were friendly. It was a great experience.
Julia's studio was the absolute perfect base for our exploration of Portland. It is beautiful, tastefully decorated, clean as a whistle. Thank you so much for letting us stay with you!
This was our first time in Portland and Julia's cozy backyard apartment was ideal for my son and I. Though a bit far away from downtown, it was very easy to either drive into town or you're only a 5-minute walk to a train/transit station which takes you straight into the downtown.
The apartment itself was very comfortable and Julia was available whenever needed.
Me and my husband stayed at Julia's for our honeymoon and it was such a great experience! It was such a cute guest house in a perfect little part of Portland. It was quiet and pretty perfect for our taste. The hosts were very kind and flexible to us. The place didn't have air condition, but we didn't mind it too much. The fan they provided helped.
This backyard extension is cozy and perfect for a few people. My boyfriend and I stayed at this place for 3 nights. The area is just a short drive to downtown, about 10-15 minutes. It's a very cute, quiet, and safe neighborhood with coffee shops and food places nearby. The bed is surprisingly super comfortable! The bathroom is clean and they provide towels and basic toiletry needs. An extra perk is having a blow dryer because I didn't think about packing one. There was also complimentary coffee/tea in the kitchenette area. Having a mini fridge and microwave was helpful for when I had leftovers. I would most definitely recommend to a friend and utilize this place again when I'm in the area! Very friendly and helpful owners.
About the Host, Julia
Originally from Pennsylvania, I developed an appreciation of culture at an early age. It has taken me around the globe to England, Spain, Syria, Cuba, Brazil, South Africa, Kenya, India, Malaysia, Hong Kong, China, and Japan. Now living in my adopted state of Oregon with my El Paso-born husband and our two young children, I enjoy cultural activities a little closer to home in the form of supporting the local music and arts scene (thanks in part to my musician husband, Jacob), DIY-ing, biking, exploring the beautiful Northwest, and hosting family and friends.
