About This Listing
*August is open only for minimum 5 night stays* An unusually awesome & modern duplex in a shophouse in george town for two up to five! *Just in - a new pocket-coiled luxe mattress!
The starting of rm290 rate is for 1-2 persons (using the queen bed only, not including sofa bed) booking this loft apartment. The apartment can take up to five persons, & the 3rd pax up to 5th will be charged RM50 per pax per night.
Get the unique experience of living in George Town! The Shophouse is a re-configured modern space in an original three-storey terrace house in the World Heritage City, furnished mostly with vintage furniture.
The third floor is an open plan space with an amazing loft and high ceiling. "Wow" is the first thing people say when they walk in. Think of days when the family would bunk into one room and everyone "camps" out. There is one queen sized bed on the loft, with one 1hp aircon there; and three convertible sofa beds (firm) in the large living room space with two 1hp aircons. There's a simple kitchenette (electric kettle/fridge/water provided) and a roomy bathrooom.
*Not too suitable for the elderly (because of the stairs). Active young children below 10 need close supervision (because of the grill-less windows).
* Minimum two nights stay required. The listed price is for two, with additional costs per extra person or if sofa bed is used besides the queen bed. The total number of people to stay on this floor is five.
* Not suitable for sensitive sleepers (more below). Being in George Town, do expect some street noise. At night - the noise comes mainly from an opposite hawker wokking away. There are motorbikes zipping by. Heavy traffic noise is minimal, and fortunately, a popular midnight eatery has moved away so that has cut down the supper crowd considerably!
*BRING/ASK FOR EARPLUGS if you're a sensitive sleeper! **On the other hand, these are the "aural rhythms" of the living city of George Town :)
** Please notify me before booking if you're planning to check in after 7pm because I'm not always able to accommodate this.
** This is the top floor (including loft) of the three-storey Shophouse. The other 2 floors below could be occupied at your time of stay. All share a common main entrance and staircase but have separate doors to their apartment units.
Off the main artery of Penang Road, Dato Koyah itself is largely residential and very conveniently situated. The place is great for those who want to explore Penang's famed hawker food and heritage sites on foot. Easy bus access to other parts of the island.
Best of the best in George Town found within 5 mins walk: wantan mee, koay teow th'ng, bak moay, char hor fun, 24 hrs nasi kandar, kaya toast & coffee, chee cheong chok ( a pork-based broth), cendol.
The world heritage core zone is easily accessible by foot, and the public bus service is just across the main road. Great food within minutes of walking!
Interaction with Guests
This is a self-serviced apartment so there's no daily cleaning service. The host will occasionally be in residence (next floor) but otherwise, the main interaction is when guests check in!
The best part of this neighbourhood is that it has a lot of local residents. The street is quieter in the day than it is at night, so guests who are sensitive sleepers should take note of this! night noise come from the enthusiastic wok-kers in the eatery right opposite.
it's very convenient to get buses and taxis. Just out on the main road, Penang Road.
Other Things to Note
Minimum two nights stay required. Do book at least three days in advance, b/c the studio is quite large and time will be needed to prepare all the bedding! Sunday checks-in not preferred.
Please let me know your estimated time of arrival and check out after you've booked.
As per Airbnb rules, no third party reservations are allowed so the person booking has to be part of the group staying. It's easy to refer people to Airbnb directly from your account Dashboard. When a referred friend or family member successfully completes a qualifying reservation, you’ll earn travel credit.
No smoking or candles are allowed in the house because of the timber. This is a self-serviced apartment so the cleaning service is arranged only for long stay guests.
Please be judicious with the use of the air-conditioning and try not to leave it on when you're out.
Guests should come with an eye and heart to appreciate George Town's vernacular architecture. While the apartment has been outfitted with modern amenities, it is still a 100+ year old house with old floorboards and vintage furniture and is best treated with tender loving care.
We had such a lovely stay at Sharon's place! Everything was carefully planned - Sharon thought of everything and we really felt welcome and at home. The apartment is simply gorgeous and very well located. We could enjoy George Town during the day and have a quiet time 'at home' in the evening. In my opinion, it was much better than staying in a hotel! We highly recommend it.
Staying at the Shophouse was a delight, and Sharon was the perfect host. Location-wise, it's ideal; situated on a quiet road yet minutes away from the centre of George Town and all that it has to offer.
The bed was really comfortable and the space is cool with ample air conditioning and ceiling fans. The kitchen is fit for purpose, and Sharon had left out some local biscuits and enough tea to get me through the five days (as an English person this is very important!). It's a delightful building, with so much character and original features. I was so comfortable here. Sharon had thought of everything; there was a hand drawn food map of the area, and umpteen leaflets of places to go. The WiFi worked faultlessly and was fast. The tap has a filter attached to it and the shower pumps out lovely hot water!
The best bit, bar the location itself of course, was the host, Sharon. She arranged pick up and drop off to/from the airport and was always on hand via WhatsApp. I was fortunate enough to accompany her to an art exhibition on the first evening and she has SO much local knowledge I learnt so much about the area in the first day!
I would stay here again the next time I'm in George Town; it's a wonderful home, location and great to be in amongst the locals and not in some hotel or hostel!
Thanks Sharon - see you again!
The place is a charm and makes a great picture. The location is very convenient allowing you to simply walk and wander around Georgetown without much hassle. Sharon also provides her own food map and some travel brochures which is very useful if you are one who do not have an itinerary planned. She even helped us with suggestions of where we can get some local produce as souvenir.
The first night when we were there, the hawker opposite were enjoying a bustling business till probably around 2-3am. The sound of the wok is not continuous and it may just come and go randomly. The second night was much better for us as business stopped around midnight.
oh and we absolutely love the experience of handling a vintage wooden doors, the type where they have thick bars on the inside to lock the door.
Sharon is a very cool host, she helped us on arranging transportation and suggested some nice food stalls to us! Her book on Malaysia is worth to read.
The shophouse is totally awesome, we had a pleasant stay there, you will feel home in Penang. We thought the noise from the food stall nearby wasn't that annoying.
We stayed in Sharon's loft for 3 nights and loved every minute of it! Such a beautiful old building that has been modernised without losing it's character. The loft itself is extremely comfortable - spotless bathroom opening out on to a sunny airwell, kitchen equipped with all the basics (fridge, microwave, kettle, toaster, cutlery and a great sink), dining table and comfy lounge area. Sharon has a very quirky collection of furniture and crockery which made the space feel very welcoming. Loft has wi-fi (intermittent when we stayed but not an issue), air-conditioning, fans, hot water and a great view out over the street. Loft is central to the Old Town, Little India, the Armenian quarter and a myriad of fantastic bars and restaurants. (Try the Mugshot Cafe and Junk Bar on Chulia Street - young locals own and run them and the food, atmosphere and drinks are great.) Sharon was incredibly helpful - answering a myriad of questions, giving great suggestions for massages, food and shopping and she had an extensive collection of maps, brochures and information about George Town. She stayed in touch via text and phone during our stay and gave us a hand researching travel options for our next destination. Absolutely loved our stay here and couldn't recommend it highly enough - lovely space and wonderful host.
The apartment was great and we really enjoyed our time in (website hidden) was extremely helpful in coordinating our stay as well as travel plan. We would love to stay here again !
It's great to walk on the board over 100 yrs. When you open your eyes in the morning, the first thing you will see is the roof. A fantastic feeling. Also the house is very sweet~

About the Host, Sc
I've lived in Malaysia, Singapore, the US, UK and parts of Europe. I'm a writer and have authored a travel book on Malaysia. As a traveller, I believe in a more "authentic" experience rather and getting a sense of the local way of life. That's why an Airbnb hosting appeals to me.
