Beautiful area

Guests love this home’s scenic location.
Featured in VOGUE and Maine Home + Design, this modern, handcrafted cabin offers calm Atlantic views, 150 feet of shoreline, and a private dock, perfect for morning coffee, launching a kayak, or watching seals, seabirds, and passing boats. Set among tall pines, it blends Nordic and Japanese influences in a space that is calm and composed. Interiors of wood, stone, lime plaster, and concrete form a grounded, quietly expressive, and sustainably built retreat. 1hr from Portland, but a world apart.

The space
Moss House sits on a forested slope above the Sheepscot River, with 150 feet of private deepwater frontage. The cabin is part of 2.5 quiet acres in coastal Maine. Voted one of Vogue’s Best Airbnbs in Maine in 2025 and featured in Maine Home + Design, it offers stillness, water, and space to think.

Built from carbon-sequestering compressed straw panels, the house is fully electric and free of fossil fuels. It remains cool in summer and warm in winter. The structure is raised on posts, resting lightly on the land. The exterior is finished with charred wood using the Japanese method of Shou Sugi Ban, giving the cabin a deep, tactile presence among the trees.

Large windows frame the river and forest. A wraparound cedar deck extends the living space outdoors, offering sun and shade throughout the day. A private dock and mooring allow for easy water access.

Inside, the materials are simple and tactile, pine floors, poured concrete, plaster, handmade tile, stone, and brass. The kitchen includes modern appliances alongside an antique hand-painted cabinet. The layout is open, with the kitchen, dining area, and living room flowing under a vaulted ceiling and skylight.

The bedroom is quiet and spare, with a queen bed and soft morning light. A ladder leads to a loft with two twin beds and a small sofa for reading or rest. A floor window and skylight keep the loft connected to the outdoors.

The bathroom is pared back and warm, with radiant heat beneath handmade tiles and a walk-in shower finished in lime plaster.

A footpath leads through moss-covered boulders to the shoreline. From the dock, you can watch lobster boats pass, hear loons, or see seals in the current. The surrounding woods are home to owls, ospreys, and countless songbirds.

The cabin is one hour from Portland, 20 minutes from Bath. It suits both summer swimming and winter fires. A wood stove inside and a Solo Stove outside provide warmth through the colder months.

This is a quiet place for observation and rest. Artists, writers, and photographers often stay here. The house is a frame for the landscape, and a shelter from it.

Welcome to Moss House.
