About this listing
Da Mon Key Jungle Bungalow is located in the center of Playa Carmen of Mal Pais yet once you walk onto the property you might feel as if you are in the heart of the jungle. The spacious and well appointed studio features a super comfy queen bed, a single bed outfitted with bunches of throw pillows to double as a "bali bed", full kitchen, private porch area with seating area, outside dining area, and a hammock, plus indoor/outdoor bathroom surrounded by tropical plants, additional outdoor shower for rinsing off after the beach, gated parking & night time security guard.
The bungalow is a bit on the rustic side. Great for a couple or group of 2-3 interested in being right by a great surf spot and also in the right place for the night life. Central to great restaurants, the banks, stores & shopping.
Located on a nice size property and surrounded on two sides by another expansive property. One side has an apartment building nearby, but you won't notice that too much as it is behind the house & just a solid wall. There is a house a short distance from the bungalow, but far enough away to ensure your privacy.
As the name says we are down by the beach (1/2 block) right in the center of town, in the crossroads.
Someone will be there to welcome you and we are available at any time to help with travel plans, town advice, suggestions on what to do, see and eat, and anything else we can help with.
The kitchen is equipped with a stove and oven, a small refrigerator, microwave, pots, pans, plates and utensils.
There is a great fan in the bungalow.
All the surrounding outdoor space is free to enjoy. The patio is privately yours as well as your separate entrance.
The neighborhood is absolutely ideal. Across the street is the popular Bakery. Next door is the Playa Carmen "mall". The mall offers a variety of souvenir shops, a mini organic grocery store of sorts called Bean & Bejuco, and some of the best restaurants in the entire town, Product C and Chop it / Holy Cow Burger. Also nearby is a sports bar called Nativos. Not only do they offer a fun atmosphere for sports fans or for a refreshing afternoon beer, they also have delicious food and a very nice coffee and smoothie bar as well.
Playa Carmen Beach, only about 50 m from the bungalow, is one of the absolute nicest in the world. With lounge chairs and umbrellas available for rent, plus beachside service from the restaurant pizzeria Playa Carmen. A pampering, relaxing beach day is only a a few steps away.
If surfing or standup paddle boarding is your thing, there are some great surf shops including Jobbies, and world-class waves right in front.
Quad rentals, the banks, the pharmacy, pretty much anything you could ask for is right within a few steps, but when you are in the bungalow you would never know, as it feels like you are in a beautiful Jungle Park.
Since we are located in such a central spot, most places you'll be able to get to on foot. A beach bike is a great way to cruise around and get to father places since town is so long and stretched out. If you're up for some serious exploring like a day trip through the jungle over to Montezuma into the waterfalls, renting a quad is the absolute best way to go. For long distances like to visit other beaches on the peninsula, there are a few car-rentals right near the house as well. You have your own parking at the bungalow.
There is a public bus that comes through town, probably roughly every 2 1/2 hours or so. It goes from the crossroads, which is where we are located down through SantaTeresa. Once it returns to the crossroads it heads up to Cobano, the city up on the hills. The next time it comes back down to the crossroad it heads over to Mal Pais.
Twice-daily direct buses to San Jose pass right in front of the entrance to the bungalow at 6:30 AM and then again around 2:30 PM every day.
The closest airport is a very small strip of pavement and that is the Tambor airport. This is about 40 minutes away, and usually around a $50 taxi ride. Coming in by plane from San Jose is one of the most spectacular views of the area, including the gorgeous gulf and a breathtaking landing when you reach Tambor.
We are pet friendly and our guest should be the same as you will surely be greeted by a dog or two or three, and a cat or two! ;)
Registered quests only. No visitors allowed on property.
No drug use.
We loved our 8 nights at the jungle bungalow. We felt very much at home, and having dogs and cats come to visit enhanced the homey feeling. Extra touches like quality bedding and towels made it the most comfortable stay we've had in 4 months of backpacking. Danielle was a wonderful host - alway available to help, but also a very discrete neighbour. Highly recommended!
The jungle bungalow was a true Costa Rican experience. We spent our time exploring all the nearby beaches, surfing and relaxing, and enjoyed breakfast every morning at the cafe across the street and a couple drinks in the evenings at the local sports bar. The local dogs and cats visited is at the bungalow frequently including a brand new litter of kittens. Danielle was extremely helpful and commutative and provided a lot of information about the town and things to do. We had a lovely time!
The Jungle Bungalow was such a perfect place to explore Mal Pais & Santa Teresa from. Danielle was a fantastic host and provided a warm welcome when we arrived, gave great suggestions for food and activities nearby, and was available whenever we had questions. Tucked away in the middle of this fun surf town, Danielle's place is a great value for budget travelers like us. Close to the beach (3 minute walk), and right off the town's main road, it was the perfect location for getting around town quickly, even if you're just walking. The Bungalow has a stove, fridge, and sink, so we were even able to cook a few meals ourselves to save some cash. Definitely check out her place if you're looking for an authentic Mal Pais experience!
What an amazing time I've had staying at Danielle's bungalow. Instead of feeling like a stranger in a foreign country, she gave me the tools to feel like I was home. Anyone listing spaces should take notes from her. I am especially grateful for the guidebook she made us. Me and my group followed it and maximized our amazing vacation. Muchas gracias. Pura Vida!!!
Great place, excellent location, photos and unit exactly as described. Danielle was the perfect host! I didn't want to leave and ended up booking an extra night. Can't wait to come back!
We booked the bungalow and were really excited about staying. We arrived on the plane and got our taxi to Nativo and had arrived just after sunset.
We weren't entirely sure which path we had to walk down but found it pretty quickly, when we found the bungalow there wasn't the welcome on arrival advertised, so we had to assume we were in the right place as the bungalow didn't look exactly as it does in the pictures. The outside area is nice, the hammock is lovely and the bungalow is a decent size for two people. There was no way to lock the door when you are inside though, which was slightly concerning during the Easter party season. You can padlock it when you are out but the lock on the inside doesn't work, and looks like it has been broken somehow. The insect nets around the ceiling have come loose in many places, so a lot of bugs get in that needn't be able to, there were also cockroaches. There were wasp nests above the shower which we were told by a nature guide to avoid as the stings could be quite nasty if you disturb or threaten their homes. These issues could have all been discussed had there been the welcome on arrival.
We were expecting rustic, and aware that this would involve a lot of nature, the sounds of the animals when you are sleeping and waking up are really great. There are howler monkeys visible from the outside area and squirrels which were amazing to watch from the outside area. However, to not have adequate netting in this environment is careless at best as they could be easily repaired with a staple gun.
We were due to stay 8 nights, we left after 5 however and sent Danielle a message telling her about our concerns (the lack of security and the wasps mainly). At this point she revealed she had been living next door the whole time, we hadn't known this so couldn't pop over to have a chat. We received very rude and short responses and when I came back to the bungalow to check everything was secure (I still wasn't aware Danielle lived next door) I found it was locked up so we couldn't have used it for our final 3 days even if we had wanted to. When we asked about a possible refund for the final 3 days the communication stopped entirely. While I am aware it must not be nice to hear these things about the property, Danielle is running a business so a touch more professionalism would have been nice.
The bungalow has some very positive features, and could be great with a little work, and a good clean. The rustic nature is lovely, but don't expect the full nature retreat experience as you are right by a busy road and behind a loud bar, which might also concern you if the lock on the door remains broken.
This place is great, we spent a week here and chilled to the max. Very close to everything you need like banks, groceries, great restaraunts and everything else. Great beach that you can hear from the porch. Very quiet even though is it so close to the main road. We plan on coming back.
