THE LOCATION AND HOME
This beautiful, warm, large home is located in an exclusive and very safe area of Burbank known as the Rancho Equestrian. The area is dedicated to homes with horse stables. Our home was built in 1938 in the Art Moderne style, with curving walls and hardwood floors throughout. The house was renovated in 2006 and the interior again in 2011
Hollywood star Ava Gardner and her husband (#2), big band jazz musician Artie Shaw lived here in the early 1940's.
The guest room is a spacious 15' x 12' with windows on two sides. It includes a 6' x 6' walk-in closet. The room also includes a 32' Sony TV, DirectTV with over 500 free channels, large desk, free internet connection, shelf space, mini-frig, and a private full bathroom.
The house has a library with over 1,000 books for your enjoyment, a large, comfortable living room with wood burning fireplace. The beautiful dining room seats 12 and has wall to wall, floor to ceiling windows and French doors opening to the patio rose garden. We have a large, modern, eat-in kitchen. Central air conditioning and heating.
A complimentary continental breakfast is included; box lunches are available for a small fee. Internet and DirecTV included. Upon request, free fax, copier, scanner, laptop computer, and printer. Laundry facilities.
Outside, we're on a double sized lot where there are four gardens, of which two are secluded by high walls, with over 100 rose bushes, fruit trees (guava, peach, apple, apricot, cuties), and extensive various species of lavender.
For musicians and songwriters, we have a detached High Sierras style cabin entirely paneled in honey colored knotty pine and fully instrument-equipped for qualified musicians. Built-in fireplace.
We have a horse stable with four stalls and a turn-out for those who want to bring their horses for an additional stabling fee. The Los Angeles Equestrian Center, a premier horse facility, is 8 minutes walk from our house. At least 6 stables with rental horses and guides are within close walking distance with over 200 miles of horse trails virtually across the street from us.
Plenty of off street parking for cars or even oversize rigs. Many visitors and local residents walk here.
Several restaurants are within walking distance, some with live music nightly.
Walking or a 5 minute drive:
Los Angeles Equestrian Center
NBC Studios with the Jay Leno Tonight Show
Warner Brothers Studios
Within 10 minutes drive is:
Universal City Walk
Universal Studios Theme Park
Forest Lawn Memorial Park
Another 5 minutes drive away is Hollywood.
Within 15 minutes drive to:

Among many other attractions, and we're only a short distance to the beaches.
We are only about 20 minutes drive from the Griffith Observatory overlooking Hollywood.
A free basketball court and tennis courts are only one block away and a public swimming pool is a five minute drive.
For backpackers, we are 4 hours drive from the High Sierras, and for local hiking we are only minutes away from three separate mountain ranges surrounding the San Fernando Valley with hundreds of miles of hiking trails.
Public transportation is just a 5 minute walk away.
One of us smokes some, but only outside.
Pets are very welcome, but we have to be sure our indoor-only, animal and people-friendly cat "Mad Max" is protected, so we'll have to work out details with you for your pet. We have a very large and secure back yard for pets, large cages if needed for various animals, stalls for horses, an enclosed patio for other types of critters.
Kitchen and appliance use is permitted, just rinse and stack your dishes.
It was a great pleasure for me to stay in this lovely house in a perfect area. I had a wonderful time with Phyllis and Randy and enjoyed the inspiring conversations in their beautiful home. Thanks a lot. I will definitely come back again!
Phyllis and randy truly made us feel at home ... I Saw horses in the ranch before , but never in a suburban neighborhood, in someone's backyard ! We spend some time with the horses and listened to Phyllis telling her horse stories . Randy gave us a detailed account of the history of the house : Hollywood star Ava Gardner and Artie shaw used to stay at the exact room where we slept! What a piece of history ... Randy told very good stories :) they both gave us good recommendations on local places to go ... They are kind of couple make you feel so safe and comfortable when on the road... Really enjoyed our stay so much !!! Thanks Phyllis and Randy for letting us stay ...
I loved my time here! I felt very welcome, the room is huge and clean. Phyllis and randy are super nice people who definitly enhanced my stay in Burbank. Highly recommended :) thanks guys!!
Antonia thank you so much for the great review! We loved having you here, but I'm so disappointed that I didn't get to spend a little more time with you! You are an amazing woman and whatever you do you will be successful! Be well and please come back so we can play with the horses! xxx Oh and what does Meh mean? Missed you as soon as you got into the car...
Phyllis really went beyond the call of duty as a hostess. Our stay there was so pleasant, it made me wisher we were staying longer!
Not only did Phyllis communicate readily and openly in the days and weeks leading up to our stay, but she gave us an incredibly warm welcome upon our arrival.
Even when we showed up some hours later than I'd originally anticipated, Phyllis took the time to show us a tour of her lovely home and horses (what a special treat!), answered our questions about the fascinating world of horse competitions, and even recommended books for future reading! She and Randy have an extensive library of books which are apparently open for guests to borrow! My guestmate borrowed an elegantly bound book on Marco Polo, but by the time we got into bed, we were fast asleep.
That leads me to the next highlight of the trip -- the bedding! The 1600 thread count and comforters made me feel like I sleeping on air and I just slept like the dead that night.
The next morning also held a special treat. Although we only stayed for breakfast, the breakfast was also worth mentioning. Phyllis probably has the healthiest kitchen I've ever been in. Coconut yogurt, scrumptious croissants, and organic coffee (appreciated by my guestmate) while we chatted idly with her husband Randy, another friendly host.
What else is there to say? A safe neighborhood, unique household, comfortable bedding, and accommodating breakfast all made for a lovely stay in the Burbank area, and I will definitely be keeping it in mind the next time I find myself down there.
Phyllis was an amazing host! We only were able to stay 1 night as we were on a road trip from Vancouver but we are kicking ourselves now wishing we stayed longer. The room we stayed in was clean and accurate to the description, very comfortable bed! The house was amazing! In a safe neighborhood and very well kept. Phyllis was so kind and helpful with information about what to do and where to eat in the surrounding area. She was accommodating with our arrival time after we changed it due to being on the road. We were warmly greeted and offered food and drinks, everything is organic which was a bonus. I would highly recommend staying here, you'd be silly not to if you're in the area. It's very centrally located and you'll be taken care of by Phyllis and her husband!
Oh and don't forget to have either Phyllis or her husband take you out back to see their horses, pretty cool!
When I called ahead to tell Phyllis I was in my way but that I had an entourage of three lady equestrians who wanted to meet her ... Well, I'm not sure if I should have done that but Phyllis was totally graceful and welcoming and loves to talk about horses anyway; so she took my friends to her stables to show them around ... (Phyllis has three new fans). Meanwhile, "horse-husband" Randy showed me around the house and introduced me to Max the cat and his super cool mom who was over for a visit. It didn't take long before I felt like I was totally at home -- My new home away from home! I chose this location so I could be near my equestrian friends near the equestrian centre as well as my being close to my favourite local Mexican food restaurant / bar / live music venue called Viva Cantina ... while also doing my music-business stuff over in West Hollywood, which only felt like a hop, skip and jump away by car. The neighbourhood is very pleasant (can you tell I'm from Canada yet? ... re spelling). It is a quiet residential area with almost zero traffic noise. This is a really "cool" place with "cool" hosts ... laid back ... I loved my two-day weekend stay here. I nearly missed my Saturday night out because I was having so much fun hanging out with Randy, his mom and Max the cat, listening to great sounding vintage blues in their "cool" living room. In the mornings, I found a small smorgasbord of healthy breakfast foods to choose from ... I felt guilty that I was on the run and couldn't fill my belly at the btreakfast table, so I stashed some fruit and munchies in my car to keep me energized throughout the day. I even got to see a professional farrier, on the street outside the house, putting new shoes on one of their horses -- fascinating to watch for me -- a day in a life around Phyllis and Randy's home. What else? ... Clean private bedroom with a big TV ... Clean private bathroom with all of the necessities, spacious rooms ... total privacy while also having the ability to enjoy the bigger picture of their home ... never feeling confined ... free ... Really nice folks who are usually off doing their own thing ... Helpful ... An open door ... open minds and hearts ... and warm hospitality. Did I mention the word "cool". This is a good place to stay because it is close to the major arteries with quick and easy access to go everywhere that your heart wishes to take you, yet it is in a laid-back and very safe residential area ... with palm trees and tropical plants everywhere. Ask them about the famous people who once lived here. If it was good enough for the stars, it's good enough for me ... Cheers. dcb
Aww David that was such a wonderful and kind review! I'll be sure Randy get's to read it. We really enjoyed having you stay with us. It was finding a wonderful family member never before known, but now cherished! We hope to see you again. Best wishes for a wonderful New Year! xxx Phyllis
We loved staying with Phyllis and Randy. Nicest people ever! ) The room and bathroom were spacious and clean. The house is perfectly located in Burbank with a very short drive to a lot of places. There is this amazing horseback riding place. We rented two horses for an hour and had a blast! Overall we had a great experience and would certainly come back. We highly recommend this listing!
I am a horse lover and spend as much of my time with them as possible. We breed the rare Andalusian breed originally from Spain (the horse on which most "Knight" chess pieces are modeled. Our horses are movie stars, have been featured in books and magazines and are all around worldly and wise. I love to travel, been to Poland, Hungry, Austria and England. Can't wait to see more of our beautiful planet. I am a music buff and appreciate all genres of music. My husband and I are both passionate, fun-loving people.
I'm Randy, the "horse-husband," skilled at mucking stalls and changing water buckets. In my spare time from that, I'm an attorney and a mortgage lending company owner. I'm also an owner of a fledgling film production company. Like Phyllis, I'm an avid reader, hence our large library, though my taste runs to classics and to baseball. I've been an adult league hardball baseball player for the past 17 years (left field). Taking a DL break this year and coaching instead. We both have a lot of other interests and enjoy good conversation over a glass of wine or cup of coffee.
