The Utuado Mountain area is easy to reach from San Juan. These mountains are super nice and relaxing! This home is under 40 minutes from the Camuy Cave Park, Cueva Ventana, The Arecibo Observatory, Caves, Rivers, Water Falls, Horse Back Riding etc.
Perfect for a getaway with privacy and inspiring views of nature & the spectacular Tanama River nearby! Relax in the hammocks or enjoy sipping fresh tea on the patio during sunset while hearing the symphony of coqui's and birds all around. I can suggest fabulous tours & there is so much beauty to see in the area!

The Restaurant called La Familia is 12.5 Kilometers away
There is a small supermarket 5 minutes away, along with 1 gas station and 2 bakeries. There is also an awesome sports pub with a great owner in Lares, the next small town over. There is also a small local pharmacy in town.
Feel free to stop in Utuado for groceries or even a redbox DVD before heading up into the town.
Both the Ponce and San Juan Airports are 1.5 hours away. You can rent any sized car. All of the roads in Puerto Rico are paved; if you find yourself on an unpaved road, you are lost! :)

This home is a great place to stay if you are looking for a peaceful, private setting. The place is simple and clean with wonderful views and even fresh citrus in the back yard. At the same time, you are within 5 minutes of a grocery store and 10-15 minutes of restaurants and kayak and zipline tours. We did the Batey Tour and it was fun and well organized. For a swimming adventure, ask Adam about his private access to the Tanama River. We had one minor problem with water pressure, but Adam and I solved it easily over the phone. Lastly, do try Ms. Olga's home cooking. It's hearty stuff at a reasonable price.
Adam was very attentive and responded to my questions within the hour.
The space is very clean and secluded with a beautiful view of surrounding mountains and valley.
Complete your work emails before arrival as there is no wifi.
Tip: turn electric water heater on upon arrival as it will take 15 mins for enough water to become warm for a quick shower.
Roads leading to the house are scenic but are full of bends, dips and curves. If you are renting a vehicle consider getting a jeep.
We had a wonderful time staying at Casa Altura. The house is decorated in a calming and restful red and brown theme. The kitchen and house is supplied with everything you need to cook and stay comfortably. We all enjoyed the spectacular views from the hammock and restful atmosphere in the mountains. We definitely recommend the added meal options as well as stocking up at a grocery store because the roads are exciting to drive - you need to be prepared! Our excursions to the local sites and adventures on the Tanama river were a highlight of our entire stay in PR.
We loved our week long stay up in the hills (or mountains) of central Puerto Rico! The location is a great contrast to Puerto Rico's Americanized beach and coastal ways: slower, more of a day-to-day vibe, closer interaction with Puerto Ricans, actually, somehow, the location and house felt more islandy/more real. The house is just outside (or up the hill) from a nice small town that has a good grocery store and a convenient gas station. As the picture shows you are surrounded by green/by nature; 95% of the time the only sound you will hear will be nature (birds in the morning and tree frogs in the evening). The view of the valley and hills from the gazebo and hammock made us feel as though we were staying at a retreat instead of a well appointed house.
The house is fully functional. The beds are comfy. The kitchen/eating area is well stocked. ABC from NY was the only English channel available (movies are a good idea). Bathrooms modern. Hot water is not an issue. As stated above there is no ambient noise, just nature; and nature is never loud it's just nature and part of what makes this property special and beautiful.
(It only takes about 1 hour to get to a nice beach just outside Isabela PR.)
My girlfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of our 3-night stay at Casa Altura.
After a few busy nights in Old San Juan, we were really looking forward to a serene mountain retreat... and we weren't disappointed! The directions to get there were perfect, even for someone from Florida like me who isn't used to mountain driving.
When we got to Casa Altura, we were pleasantly surprised that it was even more spacious than we had anticipated. There were only two of us, but it wouldn't have felt cramped with four or even five people. Definitely bringing friends next time!
For the most part we just hung around the home, relaxing and taking in the scenery. We did make the trip to the somewhat nearby (and super interesting) Arecibo Observatory - the largest radio telescope (1,000 feet in diameter) in the world. We also stopped by the much more nearby Caguana Indigenous Ceremonial Park, which was an important site to the local pre-European native people. Was really cool to see some of the artifacts they've discovered there.
Both Kat and Adam were very helpful all of the way from booking to check-out. Very prompt to answer any questions, and were extremely eager to make sure we were satisfied during the entire stay.
But despite all of these other great things about Casa Altura, I'd have to say that my absolute favorite part was the incredibly comfortable hammock out back - especially at night when the coqui frogs are out to provide the perfect background music.
For food, we stocked up at the grocery store about five minutes away and cooked our own meals, but Adam and Kat do offer a service to have local homemade meals delivered to you. There's also a bakery next door to the grocery store with some of the most delicious bread and pastries I've had in years… and very affordable.
All-in-all, Casa Altura is a great little retreat for anyone who's seeking some peace and quiet and a true taste of the Puerto Rican mountains.
The mountain home was definitely off the beaten path but was very beautiful and peaceful. It is also quite spacious with 3 bedrooms. Unfortunately, an emergency cut our trip short but the hosts were generous to credit back a day even though it was a strict reservation.
One thing to note is that the nature outside can be quite loud at night. It didn't bother me but it could be an issue if you are a light sleeper or do not like sounds of nature.
We were surrounded by mountains and clouds, the home was nice and cozy. Loved the hammock and the view ! Really a different part of PR and we are very glad to be able to experience it.
Amazing home made food we had in PR - the hosts really were the best folks we met of the island.
House was neat and very clean.

I now live in Tampa Bay, Florida, and Puerto Rico.
I love the outdoors and helping make people better through friendship. I have explored PR for 20 years and I am excited about finally working here.
I eat very little meat, listen to a variety of music (when I make time to listen at all) and I read spiritual and motivational materials daily.
My goal is to provide customers with the ability to travel and see the whole Island from different base homes. You can stay at several homes I rent during your stay, or just one.
We provide meals, tours and culture so you have the Full Puerto Rican experience!
Use my 20 years of exploring Puerto Rico to your advantage....

In 2015, each Nephew of age will manage their own property and create a college or car fund for themselves and their summers will be spent working in PR as tour guides if they'd like etc...
