Generally I am present in the main house during our guest's stay and I prefer to greet guests upon their arrival, however this may not always be possible. I can be invisible, or I am always available by text or telephone, if not in person. I am always happy to offer ideas or suggestions to those looking for a locals opinion or perspective.
This quiet neighborhood is the oldest and one of the most desirable in Mt. Pleasant, with a mix of homes ranging from the early 1800's to modern. Most of the older homes can be found on or near the Charleston Harbor several blocks away. The neighborhood is not a planned development with governing HOA rules.
It is very helpful to have a car in our area, but the CARTA bus system route to downtown Charleston stops at Shem Creek, about 12 blocks from the apartment. A water taxi is also available to downtown from Shem Creek for $20 per person. It is a very nice area for riding bikes, as well, and there are several bicycle shops that rent bikes nearby.
This is a non-smoking apartment. Please feel free to use all available utensils and supplies provided for your convenience, however please clean kitchenware after use. Air conditioner unit is more than adequate to quickly heat and cool apartment. Please be energy conscious and turn unit off while away. Local interest books and games are provided for your entertainment. Please ensure that these and all other items provided remain in the apartment upon your departure. This is a quiet residential area - no loud parties please.
Bret was very welcoming and communicative - He was accessible upon arrival and throughout our five-night stay. The neighborhood is placid and scenic, close to parks and the water, and convenient to both the beaches and downtown with many fine restaurants and shopping opportunities nearby. The apartment itself was a great value for the cost with plenty of privacy and all necessary features. The only areas for improvement were the WiFi which generally worked, especially after Bret reset it on the first night, but continued to be a bit spotty over the weekend. The heater/AC - which is a wall-mounted unit and was needed since the weather was cold during our stay - could be considered a little loud for some people, but it didn't bother us. Basically, it's like having a fan on when it's running. Otherwise, the combination of location, privacy, low price, and a great host make this a great apartment for your stay in Charleston.
This was our first trip to Charleston and our first Airbnb experience. Both get an A+. We came to explore the area and we wanted lodging that would allow easy access to the city and a genuine neighborhood experience. The Cozy Studio offers a perfect location for both. Bret has compiled a helpful handbook of host information and recommendations for his guests. (Burgers at the nearby Public House lived up to his praise and should not be missed.) The studio was exactly as shown in the listing photos. It offers ample space to spread out a bit. Though perhaps a bit soft for my taste, the pillowtop bed was comfortable. A cedar chest keeps extra bed linens and pillows handy and is a nice spot to lay out a suitcase. I appreciated the full length mirror on the closet door, lamp lighting, and ample wall shelving in the main room and bath. The bathroom has a tiny but adequate standing shower, handy electrical outlet and good towels. The entire studio was very clean with no odors. Bret has equipped the kitchenette with a Keurig, a toaster, a small electric range and fridge, plus necessary housewares should one want to pick up a few groceries and eat in. Bret's "welcome basket" of fruit, bagels and hand squeezed orange juice was a generous treat that fed us breakfast all weekend. I will say that the air/heating unit is noisy, though it was also quite effective for a couple of chilly nights.
The Old Village is perfect, and a beautiful area in which to walk. There are a couple of nice parks nearby. It's close enough to Shem Creek restaurants and park to stroll down there if the weather is good. Bret greeted us upon our arrival, then communicated via text and email except when we ran into him in the driveway. As a native Charlestonian, he easily answered every question we threw at him and seemed quite happy to do so. The studio's private entrance let us avoid feeling like our late comings and goings might disturb Bret or his family. We were able to park in front of the house without getting in anyone's way.
We'd happily stay at the Cozy Studio again. If anyone in the Old Village of Mount Pleasant decides they'd like to give away their home to appreciative strangers, I hope Bret will let us know. We'd love to be neighbors!
Bret's spot and kindness couldn't have been better. I grew up in Charleston, had a house right around the corner form his at one time in the Old Village of Mt. Pleasant, and lived on Sullivan's Island for 25 years. His apartment is perfectly situated for going to the beach or going downtown. The beach is 10 minutes away and downtown Charleston is 15.
The neighborhood is one of fine houses and is quiet. Their hospitality includes bagels, cream cheese, orange juice and coffee in the morning. They have an excellent guidebook that will help the tourist find many things of interest. Highly recommend it.
What can I say? Bret was a great host. He provided loads of tips ahead of our arrival and sage advice while we were in Charleston. He went out of his way to make us feel wecome.
The apartment was great and as described. Super cozy and a great shower after a 17 hour journey!
I will definitely be staying here again the next time I pass through Charleston.
My boyfriend and I stayed at Bret's studio apartment during our trip to Charleston and had a wonderful time. The apartment was clean, private, quiet, and had everything we needed. Bret even had fruit and bagels for us. Also, Bret let us check out late and even offered to let us extend our stay when my boyfriend came down with food poisoning on our last day. The location, while technically outside of Charleston, is only a few minutes from downtown and has plenty of restaurants and other things to do nearby, with the additional benefit of parking. We will definitely stay there again if we go back to Charleston.
Bret's apartment was perfect for our long weekend in Charleston. The location was very central to all of the places we wanted to explore and Bret was very welcoming.
The apartment was very clean, cozy and stocked with plenty of coffee, fruit and snacks. Bret also has a very helpful binder full of recommendations from must see attractions to cool bars and restaurants. We rented a car and I would definitely recommend doing so if you plan to stay in Mt. Pleasant so you can explore all Charleston has to offer.
Bret is an awesome host, extremely friendly and easy to contact before and during our stay. We had a great stay for 3 nights. The studio was in immaculate condition and had everything we needed for a comfortable vacation. Way better than a hotel! In a great location in Mt. Pleasant and convenient to everything in the area. I recommend Bret's studio to anyone looking for a great experience in Charleston!
I enjoy boating, fishing, hiking, backpacking and kayaking. I have traveled extensively throughout the western United States primarily to experience and enjoy the natural landscape. I grew up on the coast of Charleston, South Carolina and the draw of the saltwater and all that it has to offer has kept me here. As a host I understand that guests may vary greatly in terms of their ideal lodging experience, but I do enjoy meeting new people and my goal is to ensure our guests enjoy their stay to its fullest.
