The Space

Private studio apartment is located above a detached garage nestled in the beautiful and historic Old Village of Mount Pleasant, just five miles from downtown Charleston and two miles from the beaches of Sullivan's Island.

The apartment is accessed through a gated entrance separate from the main house for added privacy. It has a comfortable queen-sized bed, a loveseat that pulls out into a twin bed, and a queen air mattress. All bed and bathroom linens are provided. The kitchenette is complete with sink, refrigerator, stove, oven, microwave and coffee maker. Basic cooking and serving utensils are provided, as well. The fully stocked private bathroom has a standup shower with all of the essentials and hair dryer provided. A large closet provides adequate storage for your travel gear and contains an iron/ironing board. Wi-fi is included on a dedicated network with a strong signal and cable TV is included as well.

The Area
The apartment is centrally located within walking/biking distance of the shops and restaurants on Coleman Blvd and only three blocks from the Charleston Harbor. Notable attractions within walking distance include Alhambra Hall, the Old Pitt Street Bridge recreation area and the numerous restaurants and park on Shem Creek. The immediate area also boasts the quaint Old Village business district, which includes the Old Village Post House restaurant, the old fashioned Pitt Street Pharmacy and soda shop as well as several boutique-style shops.

Sullivan's Island and its wonderful beaches is just two short miles away. There you will find sand, surf, sun as well as the Revolutionary War-era Fort Moultrie and many great casual dining establishments. Also two miles away is Patriot's Point, where you can play a round of golf, catch a tour boat to Fort Sumter, water taxi to downtown Charleston or tour the Naval & Maritime museum including the WWII-era Yorktown aircraft carrier. Skip the hotel and come experience all of what the Old Village of Mt Pleasant has to offer!

Guest Access

Guests will have access to the apartment and the garage below for bicycles or storage of other personal belongings.

Interaction with Guests

Generally I am present in the main house during our guest's stay and I prefer to greet guests upon their arrival, however this may not always be possible. I can be invisible, or I am always available by text or telephone, if not in person. I am always happy to offer ideas or suggestions to those looking for a locals opinion or perspective.

The Neighborhood

This quiet neighborhood is the oldest and one of the most desirable in Mt. Pleasant, with a mix of homes ranging from the early 1800's to modern. Most of the older homes can be found on or near the Charleston Harbor several blocks away. The neighborhood is not a planned development with governing HOA rules.

Getting around

It is very helpful to have a car in our area, but the CARTA bus system route to downtown Charleston stops at Shem Creek, about 12 blocks from the apartment. A water taxi is also available to downtown from Shem Creek for $20 per person. It is a very nice area for riding bikes, as well, and there are several bicycle shops that rent bikes nearby.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • This was our first experience with airbnb, and we were very pleased. Bret was an excellent host, and the apartment itself was just as described. The location was perfect, halfway between the beach area and Charleston itself. In addition, Mount Pleasant (email hidden), and Bret's place was within walking distance of the old village itself as well as Shem Creek and the restaurants and shops there. We would have no reservations recommending Bret's place to others.

  • This location, in the heart of Mt. Pleasant, (email hidden) to stay if you are visiting the Charleston area. It is convenient to all major roads, as well as lots of dining options. Yet it is also located in a quiet neighborhood, and my son and I enjoyed walking around the village of Mt. Pleasant with its beautiful homes and historic details.

The studio apartment is spacious, well furnished and clean. We particularly enjoyed having some kitchen facilities available, and Bret's provision of Keurig, kcups, bagels, cream cheese and OJ were very much appreciated!

After a couple of difficult days visiting a relative in a nearby hospital, it was wonderful to be able to "come home" to this nice apartment!

  • We had a very positive first Airbnb experience at Bret's studio and highly recommend it! We were totally blown away by how helpful and accommodating he was as a host! He offered to pick us up from the airport as he was available which was greatly appreciated and also dropped us off to get our rental car. Both before and during our trip he promptly answered any questions and gave us great recommendations. The studio was just as listed and we were very comfortable. Bret also provided bagels, fruit, juice and coffee which was awesome! Being located in Mount Pleasant, it's best to have a car although it's still possible to get around without one, which we did one day using the CARTA public transit and walking. The studio is in a quiet neighborhood and we took lots of pictures as we strolled along to Shem Creek, about a 10-15 minute walk from the house. We also liked being close to Sullivan's Island to spend time at the beach. Staying at Bret's made our time in Charleston since it felt like "home" when we came back after a long day of sightseeing compared to if we'd stayed in the city center. If we get the chance to return, we would come back in a heartbeat! Thank you again!!!

  • Our host was accommodating, from assisting us in finding great restaurants to making sure we had everything we needed. The neighbourhood has beautiful homes and we felt very safe.

  • My family and I had a wonderful time in the Mt. Pleasant/Charleston area and what completed our vacation was (email hidden) to rest each night! Bret's apartment was perfect! It was clean and had plenty of room for the three of us. Bret was super friendly and was there if we needed anything! The apartment even had fruit, coffee, bagels and cream cheese (what a nice touch)! We definitely recommend Bret and his apartment if you planning to stay in the area! Thanks Bret!

  • This was the first time my husband and I stayed at a private residential studio apt with breakfast provided and I'm so glad we did. The accommodations were clean, cozy, and quiet. We enjoyed the stroll through the neighbourhood which you don't get to do at a chain hotel. The old village of Mount Pleasant, which is just a short walk away, (email hidden) with an excellent bakery and restaurant. Although we didn't get to meet our host, Bret, he made sure to contact us through email to make sure our stay was comfortable. We would definitely stay here again on our next visit to Charleston.

  • Our stay at Bret's Old Village studio apartment was excellent. The place was very clean and Bret was a very kind host. The place was conveniently located to downtown Charleston and the beaches of Sullivan Island. It was quiet and peaceful. He provided us with bagels, fruit, juice, and local nuts which was a nice touch. He was flexible with our arrival since we hit a lot of traffic getting in and were much later then expected. I would definitely stay at Bret's place again if I get the luxury to head back to Charleston!

  • Cannot say enough about how great this studio was. The best location in old village. Great for walking to enjoy seeing all the beautiful homes in the neighborhood. Bret was so accommodating and he left bagels, juice, wine, etc for my stay. It is also great that there is a keurig to make fresh coffee in the mornings. I hate to write too much because I don't want everyone using up all availability in case I need it for future stays!!

I enjoy boating, fishing, hiking, backpacking and kayaking. I have traveled extensively throughout the western United States primarily to experience and enjoy the natural landscape. I grew up on the coast of Charleston, South Carolina and the draw of the saltwater and all that it has to offer has kept me here. As a host I understand that guests may vary greatly in terms of their ideal lodging experience, but I do enjoy meeting new people and my goal is to ensure our guests enjoy their stay to its fullest.
