Where to purchase/buy SIM card?

You can purchase pre-paid SIM cards in most stores which sell cell phones. Many malls with have Bell, Rogers, Telus, or other stores or stalls selling phone or SIM cards. You'll also find them in many electronic stores sell phones and cards -- London Drugs, the Source, FutureShop, and even Walmart. You may even find a few at airports.

However...

First, your cell phone must be unlocked. Most US carriers sell cell phone which are locked to operate only on their networks. They won't accept other SIM cards. If you are leasing your phone (i.e. have a contract) they typically won't allow it to be unlocked until the contract is up or you pay off your phone.

Second, you may need to check what type of cell phone you have and which types of cards it accepts. You can visit the Canadian carriers' web sites to see if they have SIMs for your phone.

Third, you get a new (Canadian) phone number. Certain phone features may also not work without programming the phone. This make calling, text messages, etc. somewhat limited.

When travelling to other countries, I tend to just turn my phone to airplane mode and use WiFi. Handle communication via email, web-sites,(website hidden) FaceTime/(website hidden), etc. Many places in Canada have free WiFi. If you really need to make voice calls... you can look at international calling plans via your provider. My wife also bought a super-cheap phone in the US and merely puts $5 on it once a year to keep it activated.

Q. Not satisfied with our facilities:

-the procedure is very simple.
- call us on the phone that is provided in our place. we are just a phone call away.

Use this procedure when:

1. toilet paper is out.
2. your lettuce freezes in our fridge.
3. there is dust on the cover of our cooking pans.

The remarks made by Ms Cida Horst of Kitchener (guest from Oct 18-20, 2010) has been addressed as of Oct 25, 2010.

1.We threw away our old cooking pots and replaced them.

2. The fridge has been reset to # 2 cold setting instead of #4. This does not mean however that lettuce freezes in our fridge ( as our other vegetables there have not frozen in the past 4 years of our operation) unless the lettuce was placed in the freezer ! It is difficult for me to imagine the fridge freezing vegetables at the setting of #4. Lol!

3. The stove that was "borrowed" by our guests from the Chelwood Basement Apartment is back in the common kitchen. We asked our guest not to remove it from our common kitchen.

4. My wife and I conducted a general cleaning of the kitchen.

We do not intened to have guests

-who does not know how to call us by phone to address concerns.
-There was already an omen when right from the beginning the credit card transaction did not complete itself.

This section added as of Oct 25, 2010.
************************************************

R. We are planning to renovate the entire kitchen very soon,

-putting a new counter top, placing a flat cook top (instead of a cooking range), make a new kitchen window for natural illumination and ventilation, replace the vinyl tile flooring, and install a new electrical wiring system.

This is the only unit in our guest house that has not yet been renovated.

Section added as of Oct 25, 2010.

S. CONTACT DETAILS - PHONE NUMBER, EMAIL AND ADDRESS:

- will only be available after booking.

Prior to booking, wea re not allowed to provide details of how to contact us.

T. Travel Time to Downtown Toronto:

About 20 minutes = from guesthouse to downtown Toronto (Yonge and Bllor)
= between Monday to Friday
= coming back takes some minutes longer, depending on bus 17
More then 20 minutes = between Saturday to Sunday
= buses and train are spaced longer.

We have a guest, female, who checked in Friday night (March 3,2011).
She noted that she travelled about 1 hour to reach downtown Toronto.
The reason is because it is weekend schedule, when buses and trains are spaced longer. It is even longer on Sundays and holidays.

*********************************************************************************

U. We do not serve breakfast.

You have 2 choices:
1. Eat in a neighboring kitchenette for $4-5 per meal

Here in Canada, it is "DO IT YOURSELF". or "SELF SERVICE".

  • Great place to stay! Very friendly Host, Erwin, very helpful and nice. Great BED, and really easy to get there in public transport. The service of TAXI he provide is very good, and a very less expensive than the regular taxi service. As economy you get we recommend it!

    November 2013
  • very nice guesthouse and very nice host.

    October 2013
  • Me and my girlfriend had a great experience at Erwin's place. The neighborhood is so safe and quiet, with many options of public transportation and stores. Erwin is very friendly, flexible and ready to help in any situations. We felt very confortable and we liked the experience there.

    October 2013
  • Mainly a great value for a cheap place to stay in Toronto. Erwin was also very friendly, and flexible with some stuff that I needed to shift around on my trip schedule. Communications were great.

This is a simple upstairs bedroom, with bed and desk. Clean. Upstairs was shared by two other guests, no problems. The house is basic, and in an unremarkable area of Toronto, but I felt absolutely safe there and had a car, so transportation around was not a problem. Wifi was very good.

Overall, very recommended for a budget traveler.

    September 2013
  • Erwin, the host is very friendly. There is a decent size shopping area nearby with a Walmart and other shopping locations. Didn't interact with the other house guest much, which was fine because we were out for most of the day. The bed takes up 1/2 the room, and comes with a small tv and desk. There is a nice walk in closet. The host provided a fan for the days it was hot and kept the house cool. Everything was clean and neat.

    September 2013
  • It was great to stay in Erwin's place. When we had arrived, we found out, that there was a small problem with the room, but Erwin quickly transported us to the other "better one". He was always ready to help us, whenever we needed him and it was a pleasure to speak with him. He's open, out-going, has good sense of humour and really cares about his guests. The room itself was big, clean and very comfortable. I recommend it, and I definitively stay there again, if I come back to Toronto :)

    August 2013
  • we stayed there in august 2013. his original location wasn't available on short notice (which wasn't his fault!), so he accomodated us somewhere else. the original and the second room were about 1h away from the city centre. the room were we actually stayed in, had a private bathroom and kitchen. but the room and the bathroom weren't very clean.
erwin is a nice person and is quick in answering and communiation.

    August 2013
  • I stayed 3 nights at Erwin's place. The room was clean and comfy and Erwin was really nice and welcoming.
Downtown is not too far by subway.

    July 2013
  • We really enjoyed our stay at Erwin's house. It's a great place, very clean and safe. Erwin is very friendly. He gave us a lot of good tips about Toronto. We won't hesitate to come back if we visit Toronto again.
