The Space

Perfect combination of central location and quiet seclusion. This private apartment with separate entrance - you'll be the only occupant(s) - is located on a quiet, one-way street in a thriving neighborhood. Your home away from home is a newly renovated basement apartment with bedroom, living room, full kitchen, bath and washer/dryer. For a little fresh air, enjoy our back garden. This place is perfect for the kinds of people we find asking us about long-term stays, such a interns, people doing a few months residency at a local hospital, or people relocating to DC and needing a place to stay until they find permanent housing. We'll also consider short-term stays for the basement apartment during the times in between long-term occupants, so if you see a week or two not reserved feel free to contact us. For stays of less than a week, see our other listing for our guest suite upstairs.

The place is fully furnished with a queen bed, a fully decked out closet in the bedroom that includes both room for hanging clothes, shelves and drawers. The living room has a sofa, television, etc, and the kitchen has all you need to cook, including dishes, pots and pans, silverware, coffee maker, toaster and more. We provide an ironing board and iron for laundry, sheets, blankets and towels. Just ask if you have any questions. We've decorated the place with art and other nifty things from our travels and from local DC artists.

Located on a quiet, one-way street, our large, fully renovated row house is just two blocks to the bustling, high-quality restaurants, bars and cafes of 11th and 14th Streets. Two blocks more and you're at shopping, restaurants, cafes, banks, Saturday farmer's market, urban mall (with Target, Best Buy, Bed Bath & Beyond and more) and Metro station of Columbia Heights. Three blocks in the other direction are the Georgia Avenue Metro station and more restaurants.

Your hosts, who live in the house upstairs, are an American who works in international development and an architect from Mexico City. We are eager to share advice about things to see and places to go, and we provide our own map of the neighborhood and beyond pointing out our favorite restaurants, shops and more. For more on our neighborhood (website hidden) "New Columbia Heights" blog.

Guest Access

The entire private one-bedroom apartment, the back garden, cable tv and wifi.

Interaction with Guests

We have found we don't see our basement guests as much as our upstairs ones because of the completely separate entrance. That said, we enjoy getting to know our guests and have from time to time gone out to dinner at a local restaurant or shared a glass of wine at the house. We also enjoy sharing our knowledge of the local community and DC. Just ask!

Getting around

Our house is between two Metro stops and close to several bus lines. By Metro you're 15 minutes to China Town and the convention center, 20 minutes to the Smithsonian museums, 25 minutes to the White House. Many buses are also available close-by, or take advantage of Capital Bikeshare. You can plan your trips by going to the trip planner feature of the DC Metro website.

  • The apartment was in exceptional condition, clean and tastefully decorated. Jay and Mauricio were excellent hosts and left us free to do our own thing with a minimum of fuss, while being available for any queries that we had. We would not hesitate to reccommend Jay and Mauricio as excellent hosts for any prospective airbnb customers, and we would certainly look to stay there again on future visits.

  • Great location. Wonderful, peaceful, safe apartment. Couldn't have asked for better. Convenient to Metro and therefore to everything. The apartment is beautiful, clean, and comfortable.

  • Jay and Mau's place was a wonderful spot for my Mom and In-laws to stay during our family's time in DC. The apartment is very nicely appointed, perfectly clean and super comfortable. Jay and Mau were easy to communicate with and super accommodating. The neighborhood is terrific. We would definitely recommend this apartment.

  • Jay and Mauricio have created a cozy space that is welcoming and well-appointed. I stayed with them during the height of an unusually cold winter. They made sure that I was warm and toasty, which was much appreciated by this SoCal girl. Importantly, they took care of the one hiccup, which I should stress wasn't their fault, in a manner that was timely and thoughtful. As hosts, they're hard to beat.

I used the apartment as a base while looking for permanent digs. The neighborhood is a transitional one. As a lone woman walking to/from the subway late at night I felt fairly safe (I preferred to use the Columbia Heights Metro stop even though it was a slightly longer walk). Their basement apartment is close to a few good restaurants, big-box retails outlets, and a some speciality shops. Hailing a taxi was often a bit of a challenge, so I'd recommend calling in advance to make life easier. All-in-all, it's a lovely space with kind hosts. That's exactly what you want from Airbnb.

  • Jay and Mau were fantastic hosts! The apartment was clean, comfortable, and had everything I needed for a long-term stay. The apartment is very close to the metro, bus stops, and great food! Jay and Mau are very attentive to any questions or concerns and are fun and interesting to talk to.They provide a detailed area map with all the good restaurants and all the amenities you would need, and even offer to take you on a walking tour to familiarize you with the area.

If I have to visit the DC area again in the future, I will definitely stay at their apartment again.

  • Superb place; superb hosts. We gambled on the floor plan as Jay and Mau were renovating. The result exceeded our expectations. Everything was new — from appliances to cooking utensils. The bedroom was ideal — comfortable bed, lots of wardrobe space and a welcoming ambience created by good lighting and interesting knock-knacks. Jay and Mau were welcoming and helpful, had instructions and suggestions ready to make for a smooth orientation and left us to pursue our purpose in Washington without hindrance or interruption. The apartment is set in a quiet street yet within easy walking distance of public transport, shops and cafes. We unhesitatingly recommend anyone who might need a place to stay in Washington, choose Jay and Mau's apartment!

Heaps of thanks to Jay and Mau.

  • Our stay at Jay and Mauricio's place was wonderful. We stayed in their basement apartment which was furnished very nicely with basically everything you would need. It is exactly what you see in the pictures. Besides having everything, it was also very comfortable and close to the Metro. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed our stay and will recommend this place to anyone. Jay and Mau were great hosts and the check in and check out process was perfect. Thanks for a great stay!

  • If you are an Airbnb newbie like me or an experienced pro, Jay and Mau are the perfect hosts for a wonderful basement apartment. They are responsive and accommodating, great friendly people to meet. I was here for 4 weeks (for radiologists attending AIRP, this is ideal). I had zero issues during my stay. The unit itself is alarm protected, bright and modern with new furnishings. The bed was comfortable (though it was a low bed without a box spring for those that have joint issues- see photo). Also, the building is a historic row home so the 4-5 steps down to the unit are somewhat narrow and steep. Those with mobility issues could have difficulty. There is plenty of closet space, the kitchen is fully-equipped, bathroom clean and spacious. Everything you would need is truly provided (pots, pans, utensils, laundry, towels, cleaning supplies). Overall the apartment is really large and CLEAN! The location is also convenient; walking distance to tons of restaurants, bars, mall (Target, Bed Bath, grocery store), 5 min walk to Metro station/Capital BikeShare dock. For somebody like me who needed a really nice place for a few weeks close to the Metro, this place was more than I could have hoped for. If you were staying for a few months, it is easily furnished for a longer period. Fantastic hosts and a great place to stay in the Columbia Heights area!

  • We were lucky to be the first to stay in Jay and Mauri's newly refinished basement apartment. It was indeed a most perfect accommodation. Everything was clean crisp and modern. It's proximity to public transportation, both train and bus, make it ideal for getting around town. For my wife and I, who visited DC to see our daughter who lives and works nearby, it was the perfect pad. The full kitchen allows you to fix your own meals and grocery stores are nearby for provisions. However, we like being out on the town and do a lot of eating out, both downtown and in the neighborhood. Jay and Mauri do their best to make your stay enjoyable and pleasant and in the process are very accommodating. We wouldn't hesitate to stay there again and recommend it highly to anyone interested in a home away from home right in the heart of DC.

Jay is from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and works in international development. Mauricio is from Mexico City and is an architect. We have lived in the vibrant Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, DC since we bought our 100-year-old row house in 2007. After a great experience renting our guest room on airbnb in 2012, we decided to list our basement apartment as well in 2013. But our first experience with airbnb was as guests when we rented a flat in the center of Paris, and we've stayed with airbnb hosts in Germany, Mexico and the Netherlands as well.
