About This Listing
A fully furnished one-bedroom, one-bathroom basement apartment with fully outfitted kitchen. For reservations a month or more, with some exceptions. For shorter stays see our 2 upstairs listings. Your hosts have been named airbnb "super hosts."
Perfect combination of central location and quiet seclusion. This private apartment with separate entrance - you'll be the only occupant(s) - is located on a quiet, one-way street in a thriving neighborhood. Your home away from home is a newly renovated basement apartment with bedroom, living room, full kitchen, bath and washer/dryer. For a little fresh air, enjoy our back garden. This place is perfect for the kinds of people we find asking us about long-term stays, such a interns, people doing a few months residency at a local hospital, or people relocating to DC and needing a place to stay until they find permanent housing. We'll also consider short-term stays for the basement apartment during the times in between long-term occupants, so if you see a week or two not reserved feel free to contact us. For stays of less than a week, see our other listing for our guest suite upstairs.
The place is fully furnished with a queen bed, a fully decked out closet in the bedroom that includes both room for hanging clothes, shelves and drawers. The living room has a sofa, television, etc, and the kitchen has all you need to cook, including dishes, pots and pans, silverware, coffee maker, toaster and more. We provide an ironing board and iron for laundry, sheets, blankets and towels. Just ask if you have any questions. We've decorated the place with art and other nifty things from our travels and from local DC artists.
Located on a quiet, one-way street, our large, fully renovated row house is just two blocks to the bustling, high-quality restaurants, bars and cafes of 11th and 14th Streets. Two blocks more and you're at shopping, restaurants, cafes, banks, Saturday farmer's market, urban mall (with Target, Best Buy, Bed Bath & Beyond and more) and Metro station of Columbia Heights. Three blocks in the other direction are the Georgia Avenue Metro station and more restaurants.
Your hosts, who live in the house upstairs, are an American who works in international development and an architect from Mexico City. We are eager to share advice about things to see and places to go, and we provide our own map of the neighborhood and beyond pointing out our favorite restaurants, shops and more. For more on our neighborhood (website hidden) "New Columbia Heights" blog.
The entire private one-bedroom apartment, the back garden, cable tv and wifi.
Interaction with Guests
We have found we don't see our basement guests as much as our upstairs ones because of the completely separate entrance. That said, we enjoy getting to know our guests and have from time to time gone out to dinner at a local restaurant or shared a glass of wine at the house. We also enjoy sharing our knowledge of the local community and DC. Just ask!
Our house is between two Metro stops and close to several bus lines. By Metro you're 15 minutes to China Town and the convention center, 20 minutes to the Smithsonian museums, 25 minutes to the White House. Many buses are also available close-by, or take advantage of Capital Bikeshare. You can plan your trips by going to the trip planner feature of the DC Metro website.
Other Things to Note
Because we work office jobs and go to bed early, check-in is between 5:00 (17:00) and 9:00 (21:00) weekdays. Early (but not late) check-in is available weekends.
Just treat the place as you would your own. We'll expect you to clean while you're staying, so we provide cleaning supplies, laundry soap, trash bags, etc. We ask that you replace anything that you run out of. No smoking inside. The place is furnished, so please bring only your luggage and other necessities. The sofa folds out to a bed. Additional guests of 2 or more nights should be paid for with a $10 per night fee. Small gatherings are fine, but not large parties, and noise should be kept to a minimum to respect our neighbors.
Our house is the green one here (the front doors are no longer orange, as we've replaced them since this photo). We live on a quiet, one-way street, but we're just a block and a half from lively 11th Street and its many wonderful restaurants.
The hosts are great. Jay and Mau made check in easy and stopped by to check on me. The listing is exactly as advertised and is a well appointed and well designed space. It is very functional with everything that you will need right at your fingertips. The bedroom is well appointed and decorated with good closet space and a most comfortable leather chair. The living room and kitchen area is very functional. I appreciated having DirectTV and a stereo. The kitchen has more than enough pots and pans as well as dishes to handle meals. Having new dishes and pots and pans was very nice as most people just put their used and worn kitchenware in these types of places. The laundry room and bathroom are both clean and functional. Location is everything and this place is right in the middle of the Columbia Heights neighborhood with two Metro stations nearby. Without a doubt, this is definitely the nicest airbnb place that I have rented. I hope that if I need accommodations in the future, this place is available.
The apartment is very very beautiful - exactly as in the pictures. It has even all necessary bathroom and kitchen utensils. We felt at home.
Jay and Mau were friendly and prepared the apt nicely for us. They also respected our personal space but still were open for any questions.
Columbia Heights is a great area to stay when in DC and a big plus are the supermarkets close by.
Thank you a lot for having us!
My stay at Jay and Mau’s apartment was perfect. From the very start, even before arriving, they made me feel welcome through the pre-arrival emails and ensured I had good levels of information. The directions for finding the apartment were easy to follow. On my arrival I was given a tour of the apartment and any questions were readily answered. I could see right away that the listing description was accurate. If anything, the apartment had even more than the listing suggested. In addition to the lovely interior design features, Jay and Mau had also been thoughtful about providing the little things that make a household (and home-away-from-home) operate; things like cling wrap and aluminum foil being available, all the little kitchen implements, and so on and so on. You really could walk right in and find a fully functioning home. I loved Jay and Mau’s notes about the neighborhood and wider DC. This was part of the welcome package available on my arrival. It gave a really good sense of all the cafes and restaurants, shopping and tourist activities handy to the apartment and downtown. The neighborhood itself has terrific personality, is handy to all amenities including supermarkets, public transport (metro, bus, capital bikes), gym, etc. Jay and Mau are perfect hosts and I have no hesitation in recommending their apartment. Thank you Jay and Mau!
The reservation was canceled 93 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
The apartment was in exceptional condition, clean and tastefully decorated. Jay and Mauricio were excellent hosts and left us free to do our own thing with a minimum of fuss, while being available for any queries that we had. We would not hesitate to reccommend Jay and Mauricio as excellent hosts for any prospective airbnb customers, and we would certainly look to stay there again on future visits.
A beautiful apartment in a fantastic location! Our stay was perfect, we would stay at Jay and Mau's place again. In fact, we hope to visit again someday!
Great location. Wonderful, peaceful, safe apartment. Couldn't have asked for better. Convenient to Metro and therefore to everything. The apartment is beautiful, clean, and comfortable.

About the Host, Jay And Mau
Jay (on the right) is from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and works in international public health. Mauricio is from Mexico City and is an architect. We have lived in the vibrant Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, DC since we bought our 100-year-old row house in 2007. After a great experience renting our guest room on airbnb in 2012, we decided to list our basement apartment as well in 2013, and then our second guest room in 2014. But our first experience with airbnb was as guests when we rented a flat in the center of Paris, and we've stayed with airbnb hosts in Australia, Germany, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, and the United States. We love movies and traveling, and between the two of us have been to more than 40 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America.
