We cannot say enough complimentary things about Elvira and Jean. We were welcomed with such warmth and given the grand tour of the barge. A great deal of good taste, love (and elbow grease too I believe) has gone in to making the barge what it is today. The cabins are gorgeous and the whole boat was spotless. This is truly a tightly run ship. Elvira whipped up her famous Moules with Nonna's Special (Secret) Sauce which was a real treat. For breakfast we were spoilt with fresh coffee, exotic fruits and warm croissants. Elvira and Jean were the perfect hosts and we hope to see them again in the future.
Thanks a lot for the wonderful time in the most charming boat in Avignon. We enjoyed French humour, a stunning room with a stylish bathroom attached to it and delicious breakfast. Highly recommended!
Elvira and Jean were fun people to have as hosts - very welcoming and pleasant, very helpful with directions. The accommodation was very comfortable and quiet in spite of being quite close to traffic. It was close to the centre of town (maybe 10 - 15 minute walk) although to take the shortest route required the navigation of a bit of a maze of streets)
Elvira and Jean welcomed us to their lovely home, a barge on the Rhone River, with open arms and hearts. From the moment we arrived, we felt right at home. Our room was SO comfortable, large with a very nice bed and we were gently rocked to sleep each night by the magic, almost imperceptible back & forth of the barge.
Breakfast with our hosts was perfect, fresh warm croissants, fruits & coffee /tea - served on deck. But the highlight was being luck enough to help celebrate Elvira's birthday. We joined their boat neighbors in a spectacular feast prepared by Elvira - fresh mussels with pasta, pate, salad and 2 cakes.
Having said all this, the unforgettable part of our visit was, as always, the people. A lively lovely visit with our new amis, whom we'll stay in touch with.
Our night on the Vignes' boat was too delightful for words. Avignon is a charming walled city, totally walkable. The boat is absolutely gorgeous - full of rich wood and elegantly furnished. We had a deep antique clawfoot tub to soak in, and our bed was just heavenly, with a perfectly soft-but-firm mattress and a fluffy nest of soft pillows & comforter.
But the best part of our stay was meeting the comedy team of Jean and Elvira! He is an extremely talented mosaic artist whose work is on display all over the world, and a loveable French curmudgeon. She is a juicy, charming, warm, funny Aussie/Italian. They had us in stitches the whole time we were there, and fed us the most gorgeous breakfast on the deck, with a lovely view of the river.
I wish I could have stayed more than one night and gotten to know them better! I hope I can come back this way for a longer stay soon.
This is a lovely, unique place to stay in Avignon. Jean & Elvira have done a marvelous job remodeling their barge. They are outstanding hosts, very welcoming & helpful. Elvira even took us to the bike shop in the morning to start our bike ride. Jean fixed us breakfast including a marvelous cup of French coffee. Highly recommend.
Jean and Elvira are ultimate hosts. Welcoming, always friendly, and actually walked us to our restaurant one evening so we wouldn't get lost. Peniche was charming; we loved eating outside with views of the Rhone River and Avignon. Location was great; Avignon tourist spots and restaurants were within 10-15 minutes walking (not counting time spent window shopping and picture taking). Thank you, merci!
