About this listing
Our comfortable Urban Oasis is located a short walk from the Grand Lake and Lakeshore business district. Nearby you'll find upscale restaurants, an independent bookstore, and hip coffee shops. 1 mile from Bart and easy access to the freeway.

This Urban Oasis is located in the heart of Oakland's vibrant Lakeshore District, with a walk score of 97! No car needed. A few gems very nearby include the hip coffee shops such as Boot & Shoe, a fabulous cooperative bakery, Arizmendi, great restaurants, an independent bookstore, Walden, the beautiful art deco Grand Lake Theater, and the natural lake, Lake Merritt, where we have occasional stingrays and jelly fish come in from the Bay! This is also a child friendly neighborhood with two playgrounds within walking distance, a local library with story hours, and Fairyland at Lake Merritt.
Easy access to downtown San Francisco one block away. One can catch the NX or NL bus or ride casual carpool. Another option-- catch BART which is a 35 minute pleasant walk past Lake Merritt. Commute time is 10 minutes from 19th street downtown Oakland to S.F downtown.
We look forward to hosting you at our unique urban farm!
Guest access to wifi and a shared Patio.
Interaction with Guests
I am respectful of your privacy. I'll keep my interaction to a minimum, unless your interested in a conversation. I'm easily accessible by text or phone. I encourage you to reach out if you need any information about the space, neighborhood, city, etc.
One of the more desirable neighborhoods in Oakland, the Grand Lake area has much to offer. Great restaurants include the open fire cooking by a Chez Panisse alumni at "Camino," tapas at "Penrose" and "Boot and Shoe" (the owner also got his start at Chez Panisse), classic style bistro with a great mixologist--"Sidebar", and a great cornmeal crust pizza at "Star," to name a few.
For a great walk or run, you'll find our beautiful Lake Merritt about half a mile south.
To our place: From the airports (OAK and SF) one can catch Bart to 19th Street Oakland Station. We are a 30 minute walk up Grand Ave or 10 minutes via the #12 AC Transit bus to Mandana Blvd. (board on Broadway across the Paramount Theater).
To SF: AC Transit's NL and NX to SF is 2 blocks away. Alternatively, one can catch the #12 bus downtown 19th Street Bart, where the train ride is 15 minutes to the San Francisco financial district.
The cottage is self contained, come and go as you please. We do ask that you are respectful of our nearby neighbors. Quiet hours after 8 p.m.
If not too much of an inconvenience, we ask you remove your shoes inside the guest house.
No smoking in the unit, but smoking is allowed on the adjacent Patio.
No animals allowed.
If you have a car, street parking only.
No cooking allowed, so leave those hot plates at home. :-)
We stayed two nights in Dipak's guest house and liked it a lot. The space is quite large. It is very nicely designed and features beautiful skylights, cool designer furniture, and a kitchenette area. The bathroom is spacious and includes a shower with river rock (!) floor. Staying in the guest house felt like staying in a luxury hotel. The neighborhood is great with a lot of really nice restaurants (try Boot and Shoe Service on 3308 Grand Avenue) for great coffee during the day and delicious pizza in the evening). Lake Merritt is nearby and is great for walking and jogging. Dipak is extremely nice and checking in and out is as easy as it can be. I hope we can come back soon.
Dipak is the best host you could ever have. He was very respectful with our privacy but willing to help us anytime we needed it. He is really nice, helpful and friendly.
The house was lovely: as cute, brand new and tidy as it looked in the pictures.
We definitely recommend it!
I would have him remove the requirement to remove shoes.. For some seniors with feet issues, walking barefoot is difficult.
Dipak was a gracious and responsive host. All information was provided prior to our arrival, the listing was as advertised, and the neighborhood was welcoming as always. We found a tiny eclectic library ('Vernon God Little,' '15 Fighters Face Mike Tyson,' 'A Seed Is Sleepy') inside along with a more-than-agreeable couch, a plush bed, a designated compost box, and a shower that is just super cool.
If you want a comfortable respite just a stone's throw from all the excitement of Grand Ave, Lakeshore Ave, and Lake Merritt we wouldn't hesitate to recommend Dipak and his Urban Oasis.
Great space, great location... extra great host... been here a bunch of times... always an excellent stay!
Had a lovely time in nice surroundings. Everything worked out well. Looking forward to coming again.
Dipak's place was the cleanest, coziest, and the most comfortable place we have ever stayed in while traveling! When I come back to the area, I will definitely be staying here.
Bed was more comfortable than the one at my house, very well lit house, just perfect.
About the Host, Dipak
I live in the beautiful city of Oakland, CA. I enjoy the diversity, creativity and the temperate climate this city. We have a vibrant foodie scene and I love to explore the new food spots popping up. In addition, I love listening to live music, especially jazz.
I enjoy running around our beautiful Lake Merritt and biking the hills of Oakland and Berkeley-- some of the best bike rides in the country, I'm told!
